Instructions say to bolt tail section on. Fine, but is everyone using expoxy first and then bolting or just bolting?

509th,

Exact same setup as I'm going to use. Have everything but the two extra servos for flaps. How'd yours balance out?

I did the same with the flaps and mine came out just a touch tail heavy (must have been the tail flash decals I added).

I also used epoxy which might have added a some of the weight in the back, I am not a fan of the bolt on tail yet.

oops, I meant flap servos. Looks like everyone is installing the extra flap servos. I've never flown a plane or set one up with ailerons and flaps. I've setup ailerons and used them as flaps. Any advice?

I did not epoxy the tail either, just bolts and they are still tight after 2 flights. I lost a cowl screw during flight #1 and I did not bother to replace it for flight #2, The place I put the screw did not have any "meat" for the screw to grab hold, and I tried the CA trick which didn't work. As sweet as this thing flies with the CG where H9 says to put it, I do not want to change it. This plane is perfectly balanced where they say, and I agree with them. One thing I am going to try next sunday is to stay up for 10-12 minutes and burn more fuel. I think this will aid in a nose up attitude on landing with less weight in the nose and therefore a softer landing. When I landed on flight #2 last sunday, I had roughly half a tank left. I want to take baby steps and see what kind of run time the stock tank will give with some reserve for a couple of go-arounds for safety.

This week, My goal for the F-22 is to fix the small rip in the balsa near the nose wheel and to strengthen that area, and to remove all of the god-awful wrinkles in the covering that appeared on her first adventure outdoors. This plane had a couple wrinkles before, but after sitting in the sun for a couple hours, geez, it aged considerably.

I am also going to use our vinyl cutter to make some bright yellow graphics for the underside of the wing, it was pretty difficult to see which end was up at a distance. I'm thinking yellow flames that go from the fuse to the wing tips, they should really stand out against a blue/grey sky.

Speaking of the vinyl cutter...

If anyone is interested in flames or any other custom graphics, shoot me an e-mail for a quote. In your e-mail with the subject line "Vinyl Work", give me the dimensions of the design you want and if you just want your name and AMA #, let me know how long by how wide you want the letters/numbers. All of my graphics will come with application tape ready for you to transfer to your project.

I have very reasonable prices and you will be happy with the quality of the vinyl, it's a 7 year (outdoor rated) vinyl and it can be pulled around curves fairly well. I have White, Black, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green, and I can custom order many Specialty, holgraphic and many other colors and shades depending on how large the job is.

My official 1st flight(s) report.

Raptor #1: Mine with the "WA" on the tail. Powered by an OS 55AX. I needed zero weight to balance it. I had an 12X7 prop and 15% Cool Power. All I can say is wow!!! She took off in about 12 feet and climbed for the stars. On max rate with -30 on the expo she flies like a dream. Stalls straight ahead and lands nice and slow (that is compared to my F-4). The plane will not knife edge but will do everything else that this type of airflame should. On a scale of 0-10 for funness, I would give it a 9.5. Very well built and fun to fly plane. Perfect for being a hot dog and fast if you want it to be (here comes the tuned pipe)!!!

Raptor #2. My buddies F-22 that I built for him (behind my Phantom). Powered by an Evolution .46, 15% Cool Power, and the 3 blade prop that came with it. This bird had the flaps down, anti-tip stall thingies and a touch of weight in the nose. I made the 1st flight as well, and as a 1st airplane I would be a little worried as it might be a little fast, that being said it does stall straight ahead as it should and lands very slow. Maybe I am used to fast, point and fly airplanes but with all the trainer stuff added the plane seemed mushy. On a 0-10 scale for learning I would give it a 6. My buddy decided to wait until there was zero wind to fly his as the Fairchild AFB cross wind was in full effect today.

Anyone with the AX 55 have a close up pic of their cowling? Getting ready to modify my cowling and wanted to see others first.

Thanks!

Nothing really to modify. I opted to open up the rear of the cowl vs slicing a slit and working it over the engine, besides that it was straight forward... Also, I moved the engine forward a hair ( see gap at the sponner) to bring the CG forward.
