I started getting excited about this thread until I realized it's 5 years old. Doesn't matter, is anybody still up to a RO challenge? I need a new project....

Didn't know I had a mind Maybe a build from a standard published plan. Builders post photos of the project when finished and we compare notes on fit and finish as well as flying tests. Sound good? I think I could learn a lot by doing something like that, one common plan would help me at least improve my building and flying skills as it would give me a standard to compare to.

Any other thoughts?

Sounds like a plan. Anybody else have any ideas to add to this? So you are suggesting everybody build the same model lets say over some given period of time? I'm interested. Build photos, and a flying pic when finished? Sounds interesting.....Gene

Yes, a standard plan that way we can compare notes on an even field. I'm not sure about a set time frame, perhaps start a new thread just for the build-off and when participants get done they post what they've got. The advantage would be that the better builders would finish first, and those that are learning would get help as their own projects progress. I don't envision it as a contest, but rather as a friendly challenge to try a rudder only project in a setting where you won't feel like the Lone Ranger and the fear of trying "old skool" will be overcome by a desire to at least try something new. Other than a standard airframe plan, it's up to the modeler to make the final choices for construction, power, rudder control and covering.

I'm game. Sounds fun. Numerous ones of us did that with a Page Boy in honor of Ken Willard. Gene has just about every plane out there I believe so what ever we choose, it will be his second.

Alright, I'll take the first stab. How about a School Boy? I have been wanting to build one and this would be a good reason.

Good choice, John. The School Boy did feature a kickup elevator if you had the right escapement. Article and plan are attached.

Oh yes, still around, You won't get rid of me that easily. Been off line for a while fighting the big bad Mr. C, but it's all good now and Im ready to build something.

Anybody know where I can get a single channel escapement? I have some micro gear I could use, but it would lose the vintage flavor that I am trying to capture. any thoughts?

Well, i ordered a set of plans online for the schoolboy. Its actually cheaper for me to do it that way. I downloaded the set Andrew posted just to get a materials list together. Are we going to start a Schoolboy build thread? Probably be a good idea. Hope to start building within a week....Gene

So, do we want to set some kind of target date to take care of the procrastinators (mainly myself)? Say by June 16. Build and fly by that date? I'm not trying to market here, just offering assistance in an attempt to make this endeavor easy, I will be laser cutting myself a kit within the next week. If anyone needs ribs or a short kit (provided I have the wood on hand), I can provide that for a modest fee. P.M. me for details.

John, PM sent. I only get to build during the weekends, so lazer parts would be a big help. The next few weeks are starting to get busy, but i really want to build one of these. Thanks for offering the Lazer parts...Gene

I think mid June is about right. The schoolboy is a dead simple plane to build, and being rudder only it's even simpler yet. I don't see where with 2 months of building time even a first time scratchbuilder couldn't get it done. And if it's not done by that date, then all the photos of smiling faces at the flight line should motivate the slow to finish. No prizes, just a really interesting challenge and knowledge that builders from all over are working on the same project. That's pretty cool in my book.

Are you guys planning on using a TeeDee .010? I would think an .049 model would be a good choice.

Newtech, my plans are to use either my MRC Futaba F-66 or OS Pixie escapement system with a cox .010. I have not recieved my plans i ordered yet.I emailed Rubbernecker & he is going to make me wing ribs, so that will help me out some. I'm going RO, no elevator. Silkspan & dope on this one. At least thats the plan so far, we'll see how it goes.......Gene

So what is a good sub for the .010 being that it's very hard to find and very expensive to get if somebody does have one? Is there a way to use a standard .049 and "derate" the motor- perhaps with a backward prop or something? I have lots of .049s in various configurtations, but sadly my .010 is lost to history somewhere.

If all you guys build Schoolboys then this will beat the original cookup.

When I first saw the Schoolboy name I assumed that it would be the all sheet built up wing version used in the original kits. So I was a bit surprised to open the plan file and find the rather large and open frame wing version. It's not a small model either. I make it out to be 36 inches for the full span version. That's a rather healthy load for an .010. It would be somewhat better with an .020 if kept VERY light. But really this design would do nicely with a Baby Bee if the prop was turned around to reduce the thrust a little. And then once trimmed if it were turned back around correctly and the extra power used for some crazy stunting.

Mind you these days I think I'd likely go small brushless and use the throttle more as a kill switch instead of cheating and using it during the flight as basically an elevator control. Mind you that sort of setup WOULD have the advantage of being able to throttle up for the first flight and if trouble occurs to throttle back down again. With the electric power option I'd have a lot more options for fields to fly from as well.

I agree that it might be alot of airplane for the .010, but i'm going to start there & i'll move up to a .020 if need be. Im not expecting a fast model with the .010, but with an escapement system i'll be happy if it floats around....Gene

Those parts look great Rubbernecker! Looks like you'll have a jump start on the rest of us. I tested my escapement systems out this weekend and they still work, so i'm anxious to get started myself. It was way too windy to fly here this weekend also, hope this doesnt get to be an every weekend thing....Gene
