The most annoying thing about "regular" racing planes is that they all have to comply with the rules... and the rules always state a minimum wing thickness (for safety reasons)... An additional disadvantage of these planes is that they're not only designed to go fast, but also to turn tight... These 2 factors combined give you an airframe that is fast, but not the ultimate in speed terms. They use very particular airfoils to maintain wing thickness and still achieve extended laminar flow + the airfoil has to be capable of high lift coefficients in order to turn tight around the pylons...
The delta planform has the advantage it can use very thin airfoils and still maintain structural integrity because of the large wingchord near the wing centre...
My guess is that the ultimate speed design is the right mix of the two design strategies... Or you could simply make an RC rocket
In modern sport jets like the BVM Bandit and the Trim Spectre you can see these design strategies coming together... But they still compromise a lot in order to assure good low speed handling... The Bandit is a little slower because it has a little more wing...
I have been thinking about my ultimate speed design for about 2 years now, but still haven't come up with a satisfying design... going fast is not a problem... going EXTREMELY fast is!!!

....IMNSHO....I'm thinkin' Super Speed would result from an X-15 type nose (super pointy), and a super swept-back "Delta Dart" design....single fin rear....and mucho HP.
Something like this....only more swept back....

I'm leaning more towards the F-104 type airframe... the same pointy nose, but short, low AR, medium to high taper wings, little or no sweep... Still haven't got anything as far as a prototype ...

Looks really cool, kind of a mondo streamlined P-38. BUT, I doubt it is actually really fast given the power, since it has a ton of fuselage area with three of them. Eliminate the middle fuselage!!!. Then it should really Haul.

What if you took the horizontal stablizer off, and made it a three-fuselage flying wing? Hmmm, I guess that's a contradiction in terms, but you'd eliminate the drag from the rear.
I think the F-104 idea would be incredible, but I imagine it would have to go REALLY fast to get the lift from those stubby wings.
A pylon racer in my club built something like that a decade ago. VERY small fuselage with conventional tail, twin .21 pylon engines, long engine nacelles for the pipes (but not all the way back to the tail)... It was very fast, but it didn't have a very long lifespan... The pylon engines didn't have throttles, so it went in the first time an engine quit. Too little vertical area aft of the cg...

I've built two own designs, one faster than anything in the club on the same engine combs, and i also want to claim the fastest plane powered by a MDS!!! 38 ( pics on my site in "own designs" ) I have a Dust with a tuned MVVS 40, and my Outlaw can go from a prophang to around 140MPH and then back to 0 in a spinning blur. in my quest to go faster i will be cutting up a Magnum soon... Chris Lafleur 2-19-03(dated) This is one of my whiplashs. I built her with my own hands. She has a Rossi 45. 2 Hitechs-5945mg servos, 9x7 prop (180 mph) this was taken after a high speed crash caused by the broken servo arm. And yes I only broke the prop
My very first Whiplash I got when I started working For AeroJet Building Whiplashes. It had the Rossi 45 and 5945mg. now she is retired. (after over 50 flights)
I have another whiplash. (no pics yet) It has os 46 fx. HS-5945mg. This one was used for something We tested.
I also have an JHH A-4 df. Powered by an OS 77 df and a Dynimax fan unit. I may put a Rossi 91 if the 77 is too slow.
Does this make me A Speed Nut ? Yes it does Chris....and Revver #15
