Gryph,
Naw, I won't be going down this year. I've been there many many times in years past. I like watching some of the big warbirds and flying off the water. I even like watching the big boys wring out their models. But watching all the other hacks trying to be like Quique for hours on end gets old. The last two years have been pittiful in the vendor area too. So I'm going to pass on this one.

Are you coming up to our speed rally on June 28? No holds barred, run wutcha brung, speed shoot-out. I'm not aware of any events like this anywhere other than Rabbit Lake. Unlike Rabbit we will be recording speeds, issueing certificates, and benefieting hospice with the landing fees. For more info go here. http://www.caldwellaeromodelers.com/default.asp

Nice event there Vic!

You are even doing a safety inspection? Looking at "hinge integrity" and "surface deflection"? I would be eliminated right there....My hinges are made out of Cocoa-crisp cereal box-tops. If my surfaces are ALREADY fluttering, then I cannot be effected by flutter.

The speed certificates sound cool.

Our Revvers thing is about being a speed-cowboy. No rules, no CD, just speed. (Hardhats may be a good idea though)

Hi, my name is Jason, and I am a Speed Plane Addict.
I have been a Lover of Speed Planes for 1 year,
and with the help of the Revvers Brother-hood I hope to
make my planes even FASTER !!!
Don't let my wife see this....I promised her I
would "tame it down a bit". Oh, hell, tell her,
she won't care anyway!

Signed Jason, May 8, 2008

My speed plane, tho it barely qualifies compared to anything else in this thread, is the fastest in our club at the moment. It's a kitbashed Dynaflite Fun Scale Mustang 40 with an OS 46AX turning a lowly 11x6 prop. While it cranks out only 13K on the ground, in the air she unloads to 17.5K, dopplered at over 100mph. Much of the unloading came after the draw bolt broke, and the muffler puked it's baffle. Acts much like a tuned pipe now, coming "on pipe" after I level off and crank down the downwind leg after take-off.

Humbly submitted, J

Nice Jason,
I bet it gets tricky to see with that cover matching skyline. The yellow LE most likely helps a lot.

Razor,
I am the CD cookokachoo. The idea about surface deflection is mainly to verify direction. We don't need any planes with reversed ailerons going warp 9. I am not going to sweat hard hats this time out. If it's a success we will see for next year. I'm pretty geeked about how this thing is going to play out.
Did you check out the 360 degree camera view? Kmot would be proud.

Yup, she's a flying silouette. Orientation only possible by flying "from the cockpit", if you will . I added invasion stripes underneath when I built her, but they're useless too. Black + white at 100mph = grey. Just gotta stay on yer toes.

Don't see many RCAF P51 schemes out there, so I needed to do one.

Actually, I searched the tail number of the plane this scheme and number were copied from, 9597, earlier this year, and I got a surprise.... She still flies, now in USAF colours, as Glamourous Gal, with Warbirds Over Long Island. Weird how that turned out....

Built for the USAAF as P-51D-30-NA, s/n 44-74453, to RCAF as Mustang TF.Mk.IV, s/n 9597, on November 8, 1950. Struck off charge on October 15, 1959 and sold to the USA as N9150R. Became N1335, crashed in 1963. From 1981 rebuild with CAC airframe, adopted identity of NA-109 P-51D 44-13903, and became C-GJCJ in 1987. In 1989 sold to USA as N151JP "Glamorous Gal" and became N251HR in 1993.

vicman,

If my new plane flies nice, I'll be there.

How will you handle the cheaters? No that is a bad word, let me say “people who make an incorrect pass”, yeah that sounds better.
I don't want to make anyone mad but I see most people come in for radar or Doppler passes in a dive of some sort. Some do shallow dive, some do it not so shallow.

It is like they have no comprehension that it causes the numbers to be inflated.

I care about knowing what my plane can do, and I mean exactly...some others want bragging with inflated numbers…sure that is cool too.
I know what goes through my mind when I see videos of Doppler passes and I can hear and see which way the wind is blowing, all passes with tail wind.

*** Although I do realize that for many it is a safety issue. If they do a long radar run down low, the odds of them crashing will be higher.
I guess better safe than sorry.

So what sort of requirements do you have for dive angle? Hopefully excessive angles will not be given certificates.

Can they dive to get extra 30 MPH, then come in level as they bleed off 20 MPH and still show inflated numbers by 10 MPH while making a level pass?

I bet there will be several responses from people on this one.

To everyone: I'm sorry (in advance)
Flyboy Dave, this is one post that I don’t mind you deleting. It is good to have discussion and controversy at times.

First off this isn't the Euro speed cup.
I'm not overly concerned about dive angles or thru a "trap". Let's just record top speed and go from there. If someone feels like they need a little dive to brag it's on them. We aren't having a contest of sorts just a rally. If you have a fast plane and want to have a good day with others that have fast planes come on out.
If you look at the site link you will notice there are not any rules, just "Things to Know".

We all know Evan is gonna smoke everyone anyway

Looks first class Vic! and with you in charge should I assume there will be a BBQ of some sort?

I meant hard-hats for us West Coasters, you guys are not smart enough out there to protect your noggins...LOL

Jburry- Welcome to the Revvers my friend! I bet Dave will be along any minute to "bestow" a Revver # on ya! I love the black+white @ 100mph= grey. That is classic and true-

Just a thought but why not try a 10x7 or 9x8 in that thing? The AX would probably like the 10x7 quite a bit...

Are too!

And these planes are kinda slow compared to what Evan is bringing.

Hey Razor, thanks! One day we'll be trying props up to about 9x9, I figure, but not quite now. Believe it or not, this is my second plane, and first aileron ship, and we've had a year together now. Only towards the end of last year did I gain the cohones to leave her wide open for any period of time, she seems very fast most days as it is. It's early in the season here, but I'd guess by mid-year I'll be ready to try some faster props.

It's a strange thing. Our club is stuffed with .46 powered birds, swinging various props. None can turn a circuit as fast as this stang, even the shrike with the AX on macs pipe. Well, the shrike keeps up on the straights, but can't keep it thru a corner or a climb, and the owner of that one has tried several props (11x7, 11x6, 10x7, 10x8). I suppose he's gotta shrink his diameter to up the revs...

So, for now, 100mph will do me. The first time we did that sorta speed, the elevator halves separated, and half the stab went with it. Still flew well, but we were on the verge of running outta elevator on final. Much stronger tail feathers now....

J
