looking for a next project and this plane looks like a good size
my cuz has this plane with a y.s. 120 four stoke

that engine is way more power than i need

his plane crash on take off(death roll) but he only broke the wing and fixed it back to almost flight ready then let me work on it to get it to the fight ready state

he had mechanical retracts...what a pain, they needed to have rubberbands on the servo to get the wheels up but it did work
also they were very sloppy the legs would hardly stand up just sitting there

i also dont belive that he care about servo torq because he had standards all around(sept for the retracts)

what is a good set up for the plane? i want a retractable tailwheel if posible with good mains.
i dont want to brake the bank when it comes time to buy the engine but i want good proformance
would scale doors be a bit much to ask?

I had one with a Supertigre .90, just the right amount of power. Robart mechanical retracts that worked very well. All standard Futaba servos except for the retract servo. Flaps as well with standards. It was a great flyer!

i was thinking either a the standard monkote
or go a bit more snazy like a fiberglass layer (light like .75 cloth) then paint?

too much weight? my cusins was really heavy due to a really heavy engine and that it was crashed before and mots of glue was use to stick it back togather

pheumatic retracts look tempting but the price dont...

what was the weight of yours and how good was the vertical?
any bad charateristics?
could i fly from grass?

Slimline in cowl muffler, no bad habits, covered with Monokote. Can't tell you the weight, I was not the builder, vertical was exceptional. If you want to glass, it will probably not hurt the perfomance much with this combo.

Be sure to build the flaps into it . It makes the plane so much easier to land and you dont tear the landing gear out of it on a grass field . Carry some power on your landings. Flybaby

ifly, I have the TF gold AT-6/Hollywood Zero and the P-40E both with OS Max 1.2 E's and the vertical is unlimited if you want to fly that way. But it is nice to have the option. The Zero is monokoted and weights 8.5#, while the P-40 is glassed and weights 9.5#. Both with flaps, they make landing fun!

A two cycle .90 will also work but the trick is to keep them running while mounted inverted.

The reason the mechanical retracts you spoke of needed the rubber bands was to overcome gravity. If you want to use them without the ruber bands you have two options. Get lighter wheels or invert the model for retraction (that'll get some laughs at the feild). Pneumatic (Air) retracts will lift more weight and that is why they are used in this situation.

Good luck

that plane had a lot of problems... like i said it was crashed...
the reason for that was due to pilot error and a really powerfull engine... the y.s. 120

the tank that he bought originaly (16 oz) wore out and in order to fly it that sunday we had to swap with a trainer 10 oz tank
we got to the feild to fly it and after 2 hours of wrenching on it he when home rather pissed.

next day i calls up to find that he finally brought that monster engine to life, turns out that the fuel lines were not letting fuel through (pushed the tank to far a head and they were pinched)
we when to the flying feild and got it going

his plan for take off was to launch it straight up then deal with it then... during the time he got it running he hit the prop with the anntena and took a nice chip out of the prop so it was way out of balance
after holding it for a while going full bore and not sure whether to let it go or not it ran out of gas(thank god)

i really didnt want to see the landing gear fold up on langing and it do cartwheels ect. or worse

i think the mech. retracts he picked were not for that heavy of a plane, they would sag to one way it you pushed on it i was nearly certain that they woulf fold up if he took or landed on anything other than maybe asphalt

i will learn from his mistakes

What it sounds like to me is you both need to get with a club that has a lot experienced builders and fliers and start all over again with a trainer. The idea of launching the model from your hands is so dangerous it isn't even funny! I am not trying to insult here but just reading your posts tells me that you're both very inexperienced.

dont bombard me with things like i need to learnthis and that yad, yad, yad
i know this

right now all i want is to build one

A person in the hobby for ten years really doesn't mean much. there are many out there that have been doing this for many more years and they still haven't a clue on how to build or fly a plane worth a darn. If all you want to do is build right now then that's fine, go for it. The question that I have is how much building time do you have??? If you have very little to none then maybe the Mustang might not be a good choice.
