I agree with Darrol that there should be at least three distinct levels of racing.

I disagree with Darrol about slowing down 428. Too many people have too much time and money invested in the event to change it. Especially since it doesn't seem to be in the same level of decline as other events and the NMPRA membership numbers. (That statement is based primarily on information presented in High Performance over the last two years, plus other feedback)

If you've read Duane Gall's columns in Model Aviation, you've seen a partial list of the local variants of Q-500. There are variants that are slower than 424 and faster than 424, as well as the numerous 424 variants.

One of the faster variants uses .46 sport engines. At least one group uses the OS .46 FX specifically. These are in the 140-150 range. Another faster variant is SEMPRA Quickie. The engine requirements are pretty loose. The best statement I've heard about what is allowed is: .40 sized engines that are not competitive in 428. The predominant engine in SEMPRA is a Jett Super Sport 40, with a regular glow plug and an idling carburetor. Based on what I've seen in person and calculated from the SEMPRA times, these run in the 145 to 155 range. The bottom line is that at least several areas are already running Q-500's in the 150 range that Darrol is talking about.

Why not leave 428 alone, and create a new official Quickie class based on .40 size engines with empty can mufflers and a lower carburetor throat size? This would accomplish two things at one time. The lower speeds desired by some, plus the engines would not be too loud for fields that cannot host 428 because of sound levels.

It would also create three distinct levels of competition in the official Quickie realm. Especially if the 424 animal is tamed.

I believe it should be taken further and an official .28 size of Q-500 created also. What would it hurt?

I believe the Quickie airframe rules should be left as they are for all official Quickie events.

I believe there is an event in the AMA rule book that fits this description. AMA 424

But 424 has a performance restriction. That performance restriction is what is causing a lot of problems for 424 in my opinion. The numerous methods that different groups use to meet that restriction leads to a different event in different locations.

I don't know if a performance restriction can ever be implemented without a significant amount of turmoil. NASCAR has constant complaints at the start of a season because of new profiles allowed for certain cars.

Technology and physical measurement limitations are much easier to implement.
