Go to Radio Shack and buy a digital voltmeter and a 12 volt 500mah current light bulb-hook up the bulb across the test leads-check your battery.

Buy a Sirius Super Test............59.00 at central hobbies. It will discharge 4,5, and 8 cell packs up to 10000 mah. Nice high quality unit that will let you know when your batteries are going south. The above posts method works too.........but you will have to watch the batteries as they are discharging.

Right now the Super Tests are in heavy demand. Large Sirius resellers like Central and Heliproz are out of stock. I got 2 in today, only because I had a small order. Generally Central and Heliproz will order 50 + units at a time. If anyone needs one, I have 2 in stock.

A Super Test isn't going to help him check his batteries after each flight. He needs an ESV or DMM.

He doesn't need a cycler, he is looking for an ESV. The Sirius unit, as good as it is, is not going to do him any good at the field. Hobbico is about the cheapest, but I would not trust it's accuracy unless I checked it against a known unit that is reading right. ACE makes a much better one, I think Thunder Tiger is now running the ACE operation.

There are a few things every modeler needs:

1). Battery charge with cycler or stand alone cycler. It is a must to know the condition of your batteries. No matter the value of the aircraft, we all rely 100% on our batteries.

2). ESV. An ESV will help you see the condition of the battery prior to each flight. What you need to know about an ESV is its accuracy as well as its load. Most ESV's are around 300 mah, which for most people is too little load as the average plane now has 5 servo's for example and the average battery size is 1000 mah.

For a battery charger/cycler, all my chargers have a cycler built in. I use the Litco Alpha 4 and RC Dymond Super Turbo.

I also have 2 ESV's, 1 does a 333 load for 4.8 & 6 volt packs while the other is the Duralite ESV with a 1 amp load.

Most of my packs are 1100 mah through 2700 and I need a 1 amp load to check the packs. 300 mah load on a 2700 mah pack is not going to tell me the condition of the batteries in a 40% Extra with 13 digital servo's.

I also use a Gem 2000 in my airplanes and heli's to check the status of the batteries at all times. Last week the Gem saved my heli as I was in the 5th flight and saw the light go solid indicating less than 30% capacity was left under load in the pack.

Amen to the GEM 2000 they are a nifty little unit that like you say can save your plane it monitors 7 different functions on your system >Its funny local hobby shop owner said they use to have the gems in stock and no one bought them and laughed at the unit. I said to him your lost not mine for sure > I finally convinced a fellow heli owner friend of mine to get one and i think they would be a great piece of epuipment for the helicopters I have one installed on every plane now i own for the price of only 35 or 29 bucks depending on which one you get you cant go wrong.

Yes, a ESV is what I'm looking for.

So what is the lowest voltage for a six volt pack that you can safely operate at? What amp draw shpould I be looking for, 1amp or 0.500mah?

The Hobbico ESV does not have a built in load, is this correct? If 6volts is the lowest voltage the a 6 ohm resistor would give me 1 amp.

Thanks,

Darrin C
