Well I took the step and purchase the Power Expander Pro (package 5) and ordered some Li-po’s. Now to get a charger! Roger told that in order to charge both packs at the same time the charger had to work with a “common ground” (I hope I remembered that right). If you have not figured it out this is my first time with Li-Po’s, Nicads wer so simple. I have found a number of chargers but they do not indicate that they are compatable with a common ground. So far I have only found one charge and it was $300. I really don’t want to go that far. Any suggestions?

Thanks

John M

I have been using Li-Po's for years now, and the Charger I bought when I first began using them was the Astro Flight 109 Li-Po Charger. It still cooks for me and guess it will be around after I'm gone.

As to charging 2 packs at once, I've never approached that. I do have a couple of small Eflite chargers that I use to charge my small packs up to 2000 MAH. but for the bigger packs its the 109 hands down. Can charge up to 9 cell packs and up to 8000 MAH, More than I ever use.

If you are planning on charging 2 packs at the same time, I think from a balancing standpoint, you would be better off with 2 of the inexpensive chargers.

However when charging for example a 4S-2P pack, you charge them just as if it were a 4S-1P pack, positive/negative from source to positive/negative on load.

I'm in the same boat. I have purchased my first Super reg for a new 50CC plane and would like to charge both batteries at the same time thru the smart switch port.

So Rob, what chargers ARE capable of dealing with the common ground issue

Thanks in advance

BP

Hi BP,
I really do not know which chargers can handle common ground systems and which cannot. I am pretty sure the Fromeco charger is fine with them. This is not just an issue with my products, anytime you connect two batteries to a common point you get a common ground system. No switch I know of switches the negative lead. All the switches I have seen use both poles to switch the positive lead for extra current handling and redundancy.
