I'd like to install the Smart Fly Fiber Optic Ignition Kill in my Wild Hare CAP. I recently switched from a Futaba radio system to a JR, which is significant in that there is one spot at our field where the JR radios go into fail safe for a split second. If the receiver goes into fail safe for a short moment, will the Fiber Optic Ignition Switch allow the engine to continue running or will it kill it? I'd like to avoid any dead sticks from this.

Hi Ben,
If you are running a PCM receiver and it goes into failsafe it will force the Igntion Cutoff to cut the engine assuming you programmed the channel the Cutoff is on to go to failsafe position. This is the only way this can work. Recevers usually have about a 1/2 to 1 second delay before they actually go into failsafe after loosing signal. If we delayed this any more it would cause a significant delay.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

So if I programmed my PCM receiver to leave the engine running it would stay on?

Hi Ben,
Yes, but that would complete defeat the purpose of the Cutoff.

I also have this question with just a small spin, If I don't set the fail safe the cutoff should still cut the engine in the case of total signal loss. Am I correct in this hypothesis? I don't want small infrequent PCM related signal losses killing the engine on my plane causing an unwanted/unneeded crash when all that happened was a short PCM signal loss. Makes me want to return my new PCM reciever and go back to PPM instead.

Hi,
I don't really think this is an issue. It really defeats the purpose of the unit. If you do this and turn off your transmitter it will not shut the engine off. On a PCM receiver, even with the transmitter shut off, it will output the last position unless you set the failsafe position. Your receiver will wait about 1/2-1 second before it actually goes to the failsafe position after loosing signal. In addition the Cutoff will wait 1/4 second after seeing a turn off command before it will turn the engine off. I have not had anyone come back so far and tell me they are having their engine cut because of a momentary signal loss.
