Okay Guys,

As promised, here are the pictures of the completed plane. I tried my best to make good pictures to show the weathering and detail. I did one last run down of the systems and everything is good to go. I plan on leaving Monday for the trip down to Lakeland.

I want to thank everyone for all the support on this plane. The replys and the emails have been great. I know many thought I wouldn't get it done, and to be honest with you, there were times I was worried. However, I'm very happy with how she looks and can't wait to spend some more quality time at the sticks!

Of course, the plane is "never done", but as far as I am, it is done for me right now. I do have a few things I would like to attack in time, but maybe another day. I hope you all have enjoyed this build thread. My next one will be on our new Meister-Scale "True Scale" P-51B.

Once again, thanks for everything!

PJ

Hi Guys,

Here are some pics of PJ (lovetoflyguy) and Dave (ww2birds) after the first round at TG2007. For once, there was only a light breeze .. a real first for the 4-5 times I have flown at TG! PJ had a better round than I did .. but both planes are in good shape at the end of Day 1, and it's always great to be at TG. Looks like it will be an interesting year, lots of interesting new planes in both Pro AM and the upper TG classes .. more as we go along!

I know all of you reading this thread have seen the construction of PJ's plane. Mine is a 3W Bearcat, powered by a RCS 250 5-cylinder radial.

Dave

I loved the way the Cat sounds under power. The low full throttle passes you made today were awesome. I'll be tied up in the judges tent tomorrow for team scale static. Stop by if you get a chance.

PJ, and Dave,

It was great to meet you guys in Lakeland. I didn't see how you scored in static (I was pretty busy with team scale) I hope you did well, and I'm happy that there were no moore accidents than there were. Some great piloting on Greg Hahn's part when the rod let go in the port engine. I saw the hun go in, and Ed's hard landing with the Storch (great job on that one). I'll see you guys down there today, and I hope that you score well in the flying part.

Well,

I just got to my brothers Condo in Daytona Beach after Top Gun and I couldn't even wait to get online. Yup, I'm still stinky from the OMG Hot weather. The winds (if there were really any winds) were very good and YES I STILL HAVE THE PLANE!!!!

She simply flew great! I was able to fly her on Sunday (Today) by making the cut. I'm so glad I decided (at the last second) to go ahead with building the cowel flaps. That was a big hit for me. I met many people who are now good friends. I really want to thank everyone who came up and said "Hi, been following your thread".

I will post pictures up and will post some awsome video of the flights. I know I know, how did I do?

I don't remember the scores to the exact but....

Round 1 88.9something
Round 2 91.91
Round 3 90.89
Round 4 90.something

I really got wacked on the last two for STUPID (MY FAULT) Things. I got a lot of 9.5 and 9.75, but in my victory, I explained it wrong and flew it wrong. Instead of pulling up to a 45 and rolling still holding the 45, I thought I was supposed to pull up on a 45 and after my roll, be on a down 45. My bad. However, round 1 and 2 I got 9 and 9.25 doing it the wrong way and on my 3rd round I got a 6.75!

The next goof was on the last round. Dino called me with the score (I had to check out of the hotel and couldn't stay for the entire awards). It looks like I was 9. something on every maneuver but when I landed, on my roll out, my tail wheel gave and decided to escape into the fuse. One maneuver was the proto taxi and I couldn't do half of it. One judge gave me a 5 and the other gave me a 4.5! So if I could do both halfs, I would have scored VERY well....oh well! I had fun. Once again, thank you all so much for the support. I will post more pictures and videos soon. If you have any, please let me see!!!!

PJ

PJ,

Have a look in the Vintage and Antique Forum under WACO YMF, pages 87-89, and you can see about 200 pics of Top Gun. There are a lot of Mike Barbee's WACO (it is a thread dedicated to the YMF after all ) but there are lots of pics of the others too. Yours is in there, as is Dave's. Nice to see you there, hope to see you again next year.

Congratulations PJ. Excellent showing. I'm sorry to have cancelled out of Top Gun this year. An accellerated stall during a practice flight grounded me for maintenance. I was so looking forward to getting together with you and the gang, and taking part in our "best/worst landing bet"...but fate had other plans for me. Of course a miracle happened in my absence....no violent cross winds at Lakeland this year. That's one for the record books!
Will you be at The King Orange scale masters qualifier event in June...also here in FL???
CJ

Bill,

It was great talking too you there and I learned so much. Also learned how to properly do a victory Roll!!! I'm going to give you all a run for your money next year!

As far as my static. Can you believe this crap! I got a 100% out of 100 on my static. Yes a Perfect Score and didn't take home a trophie! Nothing. Oh by the way, everyone else who could show 1 color picture to prove their plane got 100% too in Pro-Am! All we had to do is show a picture and we get 25 out of 25.

Thanks for the comments on the score. I decided not to use mechanical option such as retracts etc for my points. All of my points were maneuvers. I wanted learn as much as I could and wanted to work for my score. Next year I will know my plane better and practice more, and maybe get closer to Dino in the point spread. And yes, Dino took home best gas performance and 1st in Pro-Am. I'm proud of him.

CJ,
I looked everywhere for you. Sorry you didn't make it, but we'll extend that landing bet till next year bud. I TOOK that one home. When I get the videos online, you will see how luck, wind, and a little skill (mostly luck) helped me nail the landings......
