Hi Guys ( and girls ) I am on the verge of buying one of these artf kits and wondered if anyone has done one and what they think about the kit.Thinking of using buying a Saito 125 4c as my O.S.90 4c would probably be short of power for vertical performance. My other option is to go for the smaller ( and not as nice ) hangar 9 job and use the OS 90 surpass.Your thoughts ( from people who have flown either Spit would be gratefully appreciated. Douglas or Johnnie?................

ih i help out at clacton modles i have just recieved mine the top gun spit is fantastic quality for price , first 90 or 120 the plane in its design is verry tail heavy so quite a bit of lead needs to be added up front so, so bearing this in mind it makes sence to fit the one 120as its heaveyer has more power and means less lead up front, trade off the bottom of the one twenty and the exhaust will protrude from the planes cowal . the90 you can keep all inside .i myself am takeing the 120 option , i have had the opertunity to talk with jay at cml ,who distribute the spits he has flown one and there are the spit has no bad flying habbits, one thing he did say bearing mind he has only just got his in the air , on landing his tiped over a coupple of times , we think we know why, he fited the 90 and shoved all the lead right up at the fie wall to get the c of g , this is ok when in the air but unless you have a near perfit flat runway, any bump will not help causing landing tip , what i am going to do and i have to get back to cml with a report on this , i will use the 120 , hense less lead next i will put in a far larger batt giveing longer time and puting weight up front meaning again less lead also do away with the plastic spinner going for a alloy one, this should distribute the weight more evenly helping the landings , then add what lead i have to up on the fire wall, OK NEXT dont use the plastic clevis in the pack use meatel ones , also im doing away with the myleane hinges use proper ones , the air scoop and cowls dont stick them on with epoxey or ca glue , use zap a gap a goo this stuff holds the bits on fantastic , but in event of a misshap the scoop or cowal will come away from the wing, with out causeing damage to it its a sort of sillicone , think it will be a great investment also to add a on bord glow system as the engine is inverted stops dead sticks i am ,also you will have to go get train a pilot as he is not supplyed, i am going to add a coupple of ultra bright white leds inside the cannons will look great on a low slow pass have done this with my stuka and mosse its so simple to do, think that about does it oh last thing kit is in a matt finish looks 100% better also dont know if you noteised the air retracts are the right way round thats a first, i my self upon looking at these my just beef up the ply in the wing just as a precaution ,easyer to do when building that when finished , that it if you need any help or the plane etc give steve a ring on clacton modles hope this has helped fly safe regards steve

I too have just bought this kit and agree the matt finish is far better looking than the Hanger 9.
Skippy any chance of you doing a build thread on this one? or at least give us a flight report when you fly it. Going to be a month or so before I can start my build.

I’m still undecided on the engine. I was going to use the RCV 90 (might still do) to keep the cowl as clean as I can. It’s a lot heavier at 780g than say my Satio 120, which is 620g. The RCV will swing a nice scale looking 16 x 13 prop though. Any advice would we very welcome

Going to reinforce the front bulkhead, servo tray along with the undercarriage beams. I might try and angle the undercarriage legs slightly more forward to stop the tip over tendency.

Parts I ordered along with the kit so far include 3” Dubro wheels with the diamond tread pattern. Some oleo legs, and an aluminium spinner. Still have to source a nice pilot for it.

Go for it ykdickybill , jury’s is still out with me, but so far it all looks a good kit.

Happy buying and flying, Martin

How would the Laser 150 fit the cowl?

The cowl although it looks big enough when its off the plane the space is really quite small as the front bulkhead protrudes a good few inches into it. Think you’d have a hard time trying to shoehorn a Laser 150 into without some major surgery involved.
According to all the blurb, the test aircraft was fitted with 91 4 stroke - which still needed cut out’s in the cowl for the cylinder head and silencer.
Link to a web site with some pics, although they don’t really do the plane justice.

Hi guys I have recently completed my Spit,

Specs:

Futaba radio gear

Laser 100

14/8 three blade prop

Uni-tract Air up & spring down retracts

As to the engine positioning I found and marked the Horizontal & Vertical line and then the engine mount six millimeters to the left giving me the correct amount of side thrust.

The only thing I had to do with the nose weight was to put about ten strips of weights around the rear of the engine mount. But after all of this she flies like a dream, No twitching of the tail I only had to put a small amount of up trim. and as to the landing well I just kept here nose up and let her gradually fall until the last moment the gave a little bit of flair.
