I'm looking to purchase a .15 2 stroke engine. I see towerhobbies offers about 5 different engines. They are 1-AP 2-magnum 3-os la 4-os cv and 5-thndr tgr gp.

What one would you recommend and what order would you rate them best to worst.

Also are there other brands out there worth looking at?

Thanks for the advice!!

Bovan,

The MVVS .15 GFS/R can be selected as side, or rear exhaust and is in stock trim capable of over 22,000 (with a 7x4 prop).

It is a bit more expensive than the four engines you listed, together with its mini-pipe.

...But if 'bang for the buck' is what you're after, it has a lot more bang for only a little more bucks...

If you want to power a trainer, a normal silencer (or an extra quiet one) are also available.

TT .15 for the bucks. If you want more performance then a Fox .15 would be better than, say OS. Can't speak for the engines Flyboy or Dar mentioned. There are only a few .15 engines I have experiance with.

The OS is a wimp. The TT is better and very easy to run (have 2). I'd go for the magnum.

Who deals new fox stuff? There is a local fellow that is very impressed with the output of his fox .15.

For out of the box performance it is hard to beat the OS 15 CVA It likes nitro 25 -30 % and I run mine on a APC 7x5 for 12th scale RC combat.

The silencer as supplied is quite restrictive and a mousse can muffler will give more power.

However bang for buck Hmmm they are pricey.

For my sport flying uses I prefer the TT and Enya SS 15 engines. No ball bearings to rust, no heavy ball bearings to lug around and a reasonable pricing.

Thanks for the advice.

OK, I'm looking at getting either the magnum, or the tt gp. Which one is the better and why?

I read this in specs on the TT: Any problems with it?

"Precision air-bleed (single needle) carburetor makes needle valve
adjustment simple"

Bovan,

The TT has a simple air-bleed carburettor, unlike the more elaborate ones in some Enya engines, for example.

This means fuel is not metered and the air-bleed closely controls the mixture strength at idle only.
There is no 'fuel curve' as such, for part throttle mixture control.

This is a minor limitation. The MVVS also has an air-bleed carburettor.

Is that to say that the low end is the only adjustable range?

This is a question that I have wondered about for some time.

The engine on your list that I drool over is the OS .15 CV, but at $110 it would be a bit much for a twin engine Goldberg Skylark that I would like to build.

The AP engines are reported to have about zero power, which is too bad, because they are kind of cute, especially the .09 with the rear exhaust and BB.

The OS LA and the TT 15 are both bushing engines. Really nothing wrong with bushings, that how my Corvette engine is built, but I do like the BB engines. The TT stuff seems very well made. OS has been at this for a long time too. It's a Ford or Chevy.

The magnum looks good on paper. Power almost like the OS CV. But I have seen poor examples of their stuff in the past. I don't know whether to say it was a modeler that was a hack, or the engine, or the fuel he was using. They used to run a full page ad with a picture of a guy looking through an unassembled case with the caption "our perfection is boring". What made this a laugh was the tool chattering marks where they machined the case for the rear cover. Who knows where they are with todays stuff? Can't trust marketing anyway, it's their nature.

The MVVS sounds good if you want to spin a small prop at high rpm's. My Nelson .15 is that way too, turning 25K on a 6-5. But not the engine for most airplanes where you need a 7-5 or 8-4 to match the airframe drag.

It's not likely to get any better in the .15 size, I doubt you will see very much new development in this size. Electrics will see to that, and they will be pushing the .40's on all fronts in a very few years.

No, Bovan.

The very top is adjustable for mixture strength, by the high-speed needle and the idle mixture is adjustable by the air-bleed screw.

It is the mid-range that has no form of fuel-metering and will typically run a bit too rich.
