No declaration necessary for new engines or modification to existing engines (and there have been many over the last twelve years, some increased power, some for longevity). If this were the case, we would have reams of paper on every little machining change we've done to the engines.

Want an engine? I have plenty. Want a new prop? I have those, too.

Well I figure since Scott posted those practice times on the NMPRA site, I'll post mine here,,, yes, I'll do both 9 and ten lap times just for you,,, just so you will know what you can expect to see on the time slips

Nope not going to Phx, I don t have my new engines yet plus my work kinda helped to kill the trip out also.

Don't you guys know that the course has been shortened? We now fly with the honor(?) system. If you say you didn't cut then that's good enough for us!

I'm pretty sure we proved the honor system is only good for the first 5 laps (maybe).

How can you keep this exciting for the paying spectators if nobody cuts to stay with the pack? Besides the old guy pylon judges aways cut us old guy racers some slack.

GS

Gary,
Getting one point in the same heat with you is my challenge. Actually keeping my planes in the air when racing you and Jim should be the first. Those proud turds keep leaving some nasty "farts" that I keep flying through..... good times.

Wish I could be with you guys this year....turns out all the basin races are on the same dates as all my races.....bummer.

I'm assuming that there was a declaration sent to the AMA and the contest board chairman (Pete Reed) on the new engine design. There should also be an approval letter from the contest board chairman on file with the AMA and the NMPRA for publication. Anybody see these documents?

I asked this on the NMPRA forum, but recieved zero response. Most likely it's a dumb question and that's why, but maybe someone here can answer it for a lowly 424 pilot.

What does it take to get one of these new engines to run F3D fuel or can they? Can we expect some super competition in F3D at the NATS?

Not an ignorant question, Stan, but these new engines are not the same configuration as the engines run in F3D. They are side exhaust, not rear, and don't run with full wave pipes like F3D. Henry Nelson has built a number of rear exhaust long strokes for F3D, and they compare favorably with anything currently being run, but Henry doesn't do this business for his health, and the market for F3D engines is considerably smaller than that for Q500/Q40, so he concentrates on what makes more $.

F3D is the **** child of racing in the USA. We don't race it as a normal event and never will as long as more easily competed venues are available to us. My prediction is that the bulk of the world's racing will soon be Q40 due to the price of admission and the complexity of aircraft being lower. In other words, more bang for the buck. Believe me when I tell you that there are lots of guys worldwide that feel the same way.

Izzy:
It’s hard for me to tell which is best yet. I for one don’t know what the top end RPM for the LS is. The old Q40 was all done at about 27K (off end of pipe). With my unload prop the best I ever saw was 28.2 K. The LS right out of the box was 29.8 with the same prop (probably need a heavier UL prop). I am still breaking mine in and saw 26.2 K (ground pinch up) with a 7.6 today at the Basin. My gut feel for it now is the 7.6 or 7.7 and let it run. Some are running the 7.8 and really like the way it unloads. With the 7.8 max ground RPM seems to be in the mid to high 24K range which is exactly what Dave said was the min necessary. Since we now have a good range of props I think you will see different combinations depending how each person likes to run their engine. We will have a much better idea after PHX. One thing I do find very different about this engine is the amount RPM off peak required on the ground. I’m launching mine at least 2k down or I get a lot more color on the plug than I like. We will be out testing again tomorrow and hopefully have more data.

Barry

Barry, put an .003" shim under the head. The engine is over compressed and you'll burn it up if you continue running it this way.

sounds like a different animal completely. Those are impressive rpm readings. I'm curious how the guys wood props are going to work on this new engine.
