Kyosho P-51D Mustang-Kitbash superdetail
I had a Kyosho P-51 Mustang, and it was great. I love planes this size, you can put them in your car in one piece. scale is more important to me than anything else. it looked really good for an ARF. close to scale outlines and it flew great! I changed a few things to make it look even better, changed the tailwheel to the scale position and changed the main gear to make it look more scale. the engine was completely hidden inside the cowl. I finally lost it after the cheap ARF spinner broke and the prop flew off while flying low and slow. I tried to turn back to the field but pulled too hard- actually this model would turn very sharp for a warbird because it was very light. but without power and the slight weight of the spinner missing, it snapped and with not even a full turn it hit the ground and shattered. this was one of my favorite models and it was sorely missed. well I decided to get another one and really go all out with it. this time I will peel off the covering even though it now is much better quality. the stars on both sides really bothered me, so the covering goes! my old one was starting to get fuel soaked after 6 years and 129 flights. the new one will get glassed and covered with flight metal-my first time useing it. the wing will be painted as per the full size P-51. a new nose out of balsa with a more scale outline and a quality aluminum p-51 style spinner from Tru-Turn. fully sheeted wings, sheeted tail surfaces, flaps, drop tanks, full depth cockpit, retractable tailwheel, and maybe inner doors. yes I know it will be heavyer than the original, but it to me was too light, it was a great flying MODEL, but it did not fly like a real warbird- it needed to be heavyer, for me anyway.

"Betty Lee III" is out and with much thought, "Dallas Doll" is in. the building board is clean and ready for a new project!

I tore all the covering off. the ARF kit has been upgraded with heat shrink covering, so it is better than the old shelfpaper stuff. but now the panel lines are missing. that wont effect this project though. I am committed now!

The stock spinner is too small for scale and the stock cowl is shaped to match that. so I am making a new one out of wood. the OS .46 SF from my old Betty Lee is mounted and the blocks are glued on ready for carving to match the Tru-Turn P-51 style aluminum spinner.

Shaping of the nose is done. the spinner is bigger than the stock one, and I think it looks more scale. better quality too.

Well, I know he has some, but I think he's working mainly from pics and three views. I hope I still have mine when it's finished. Like to see them in formation again. A Spitfire would look pretty nice too.

Actually you are right, but I am working with a spinner that is still too small and not the true P-51 shape. and the hood area top outline from the windscreen to the spinner has a very slight radius that the ARF does not have. also the nose has bulges on ether side for the cyl head covers on the full size bird that I tried to add that do show in the pics. this model will look a lot better than the stock ARF, but not as good as if I scratch built one. there will be a few compromises to scale just to get it all to come together.

OH don't get me wrong i think your doing a great job and im no expert by ALONG way.
Something to think about though::
Could you take the top of the fuse from near the canopy to the spinner and remove it. You could then glue a block back on and sand it to a better shape. Formers would still attach to the block so it would still be strong. I don't think it would be that hard to do and the shape would be much better. Your already have it close.
Bashing arf's can sure make some decent looking planes.
Here is a H9 P-51(77ws)

I have enough projects to keep me busy till I'm 90! my goal with this ARF is just to make it look better but to only go so far, it is just a .40 size plane and to me changing the outline on a model that is already built is too much work this time. great looking flying pic of your P-51.
moving on to the tail and the retactable tailwheel. the Robart tailwheel is mounted on a sub bulkhead cause there is nothing back there on the ARF. will use a small air cylinder for the retract and a dowl pushrod and flexible cable for steering.

Good looking prop capt G. mine will have a static 4 blade too. the retractable tailwheel is in, along with the spring loaded doors and the fixed radiator coolant door.

OK the tail is finally done! have not tried the Flite Metal yet. I sheeted the tail sufaces to make them look better and be stronger. in the pic you can see the original rudder and the new one I made that will be covered with fabric. next a little work on the cockpit and then the wing.

The Summer flying season is slowing down and building season approches. back on the project! it did not look like I would have it done in time for the Summer flying events, so I built the ARF Mauler to fly.
I have started the wing now. the wing is joined, and now locating the points for the gear.
