If that was my full size P-51B I would rip that fabric off and sheet them with METAL!!! . Can a full size plane not be scale?

Dail, and everybody else... I wanted to mention something that I saw at my local club field this past weekend. A fellow member brought out a 40 sized Cherokee (I think that's right) plane he'd built from a kit. What was really impressive right off the bat, was that he'd not simply outlined the elevator trim tabs, but had cut them out and covered them seperately then glued them back into place! The effect was much more realistic than simply outlining the trim tabs like most people do. I was impressed... they looked awesome! They of course weren't functional but the look was incredibly realistic.

Just wanted to mention that for any future projects you do. Probably only adds a dozen extra minutes to the build, but the effect is really really nice.

Later!

- Michael

Thank you folks! I love to see modelers just do something extra on thier planes.

I did cut the rudder trim tab out. Cause I almost forgot it was there and had to put it in later!

The judges pointed out that I had no lights- oops just never thought about it. And just wire for tail wheel and wood grain on inside of tailwheel doors. And of course the Kyosho outline. Good enough this time. The next one will be better. But not much bigger !!!!!!

Corey

I've enjoyed your build ever since the first posting. Great craftsmanship and a neat subject. I started a Kyosho 51 several years back with a similar intent. I got as far as modifying the gear position and forming the inner doors. Your project has inspired me to finish it. Thanks. Did you compete in Open class? How did the judges react to your model?

Best regards

John

I have a couple of questions about your build.
1. What is the thickness of the balsa skin you used on the horizontal and vertical stabs?
2. What did you sue on the wing and did you sheet the bottom as well?
3. Did you use a 3" spinner?

Best regards

John

All the sheeting that I used was 1/16th balsa. All surfaces are sheeted, top bottom front back and inside! The spinner is a 2.75" Tru Turn P-51 style.

She now hangs with my old surviving contest veterans- Royal P-38(7 yrs.), Stafford B-24(8 yrs.), and my really old Scratch Tsunami(18 yrs.).

Thanks for reply Corey. I was playing with the scale of this model and come up with it being 1/8 which sounds about right to me. When I used this scale to calc a spinner diameter based on the full scale diameter of 29" I end up with a scale spinner that is 3.62" so a 3.5 Tru Turn would be pretty close to scale. These project is getting interesting again.

Best regards

Here are some shots of the work I did several years ago on this project. Still needs a lot of work, but you have inspired me. The retract is a reversed Spring Air with air both ways plus the spring. The inner door is alum for now just to get the angles correct. As you can see I have the complete retract, oleo and 3" wheel in the gear bay deep enough to close the doors.

The outer door is also alum and is hinges to the cover plate. All of this is just temp stuff to get the feel for how to make this work.

When you skinned the upper wing, did you remove the original sheeting or sheet in the open bays or cover over the existing skin?

Best regards

Oh man! I'm jumpin up and down! I tore my hair out trying to do what you have done!!!

Does it work?

I pulled the cap strips off and sheeted the open area.

I appreciate your comments a lot. The retract works great but the inner door details have not been proven out yet. I don't see why I can't make them work. I could do it like my old Byron Mustang and put a small air cylinder on top of the wing skin to operate both door. I don't think there is enough room in the gear well for air cylinders. I'll work on this.

I figuired you pulled the cap strips and sheeted just the open bays, that makes the most sense. I thought about skinning the wing with G10.

Click on the "post reply" button, then at the bottom of the window, click on the upload line, browse your computer to the photo you want to attach. Piece of cake, once you get it done the first time.

Wow, I thought this thread was long dead in the archives. Kyosho does not make this model anymore. Glad I got a spare. I like this model because of its size! The whole model world is upsizing for a hundred reasons that I have heard a thousand times.
