ORIGINAL: scale dail Wow, I thought this thread was long dead in the archives. Kyosho does not make this model anymore. Glad I got a spare. I like this model because of its size! The whole model world is upsizing for a hundred reasons that I have heard a thousand times.

Dail:

You'd be surprised the number of these that are coming out of the woodwork. I am actually considering finally building mine. You're right about the convenient size. I've got a YS91AC just begging to sit in it.

Make it bigger make it bigger. I am sick of all that! With this "little" 40 size P-51 I have qualified for the Scale Masters champs in Washington 2009. Two years in a row and this year I qualified twice!

I'll admit its just because there was no one with anything better in Advanced class .

Too bad I can't actually go to the Champs this year. Dennis Crooks has another chance to win! Ha! Ha!

Here are some pics of the inner door set up on a 60 size P-51 that a guy brought out for me to see. It is all mechanical driven from the retract itself. Neat!

Back in the 70's when I worked as a transmitter runner at a couple of big shows in the UK I had the chance to sit next to a couple of Brian Taylor' original models... I'll tell you, they' weren't that much bigger than yours (.60) and he was out there competing them at an international level. They where super perfect. You want to see what some of the Europeans fly in control-line scale. Little Beauties!
You can have NO problems talking a straight forward BT .60 plan and building a model that is more than competitive at a F4C level. At home and internationally. Just got to go for it.
As you have shown. Congratulations.

Love yer little Mustang Dail! I guess I wouldn't say it is quite a super scale model of course. Glad you're having fun with it (it does look pretty great). I am getting around to my 1/6th Royal Corsair build up (and this is not super big...just right-sized in my opinion at 82 inch span). I do think a slightly bigger scale model flies better, and has a more liveable wing loading. As you know I like the old .60 size scale planes also (I haven't abandoned the concept entirely).

Thanks Ridd. I'm building a 60 size model right now!
But that would be for another thread.

You sure are a busy builder Dail, I am in awe! Congrats on your competition succes's. I am looking forward to "Warbirds over the Rockies" here in the Denver area next week. We don't have as many big events as other states (well until now). I look forward to keeping an eye on your projects! - Eric

scale dail,

Really enjoyed reading this thread. I got a lot of additional detailing ideas from you. Thinking seriously of using Flite Metal as well on my .40 scale Mustang.
Ihave been concerned with wing loading, as you were, but yours flys so well at 9 pounds. So far I am just under 6 with airframe nearly completed. Guess if I complete the inner door set up, I'll still be in good weight/ratio range.

We are getting a lot of action on the Great Planes .40 P51 kit build... thread.

How did you make your scale 4 blade prop?

Thanks!!

Don

I had to replace the engine, an OS .46SF. It had lost compression, and would not idle very well anymore. The engine had been around, it was in my Royal P-51 with 96 flights, the first "Betty Lee" Kyosho Mustang with 128 flights and this "Dallas Doll" with 70 flights. It now has a brand new OS .46SF ABC powering it. In fact I won best Military at the Western Scale Invitational this February 2010! It was very windy!
There is some video here on this thread about the event. Thanks to Crashpro for posting the video!

My next Mustang is a few years away. A Bob Holman P-51B Mustang kit. It will have inner doors!

Excellent video and indeed, quite windy!!

Your heavy Mustang appears to take off nicely given ample time to come up to takeoff speed.

Thanks for sharing!

...And making the drop tanks.

I'm interested in making drop tanks for my Great Planes Mustang project, and would like to see your drawings/pictures and description of your build on these, please.

Your GP P-51 is looking very good!
My drop tanks came from an EZ models, accesory kit from the 90's. and Vortac bomb drop mechanisms.
Try this guy for tanks

What a masterpiece the "Dallas Doll" is. I just started working on the Betty Lee ARF that's been sitting around my basement for a few years. I'm going to add retracts to it and after seeing this thread was considering adding flaps as well. Do you have any advice you could share as to how to do this? I'm assuming after cutting them out of the wing you need to build up a new trailing edge to the wing and a LE to the flap cutout. Beyond that, I'm not sure.
Thanks!
Scott
