I would like to build my own 12v power supply using an old atx power supply as i have lots of them laying around

I have found a few diy guides on the internet but have a few ?'s

seeing how as it would only ever be used for powering a triton JR charger are the 5v leads really necessary and I noticed that the resistor in most of the DIY i am finding is placed on the 5v line

I would just like to have 2 poles for the connection of the charger and nothing else at least one of the guys who will be using this cant exactly be trusted to use the right hookups

Your right, the 5 volt leads is only nessecary to install the resistor or bulbs. I've done a few of them and use 2 6 volt bulbs to load the 5 volt rail and use only one set of leads for the 12 volt. I only get 11 volts or so but is plenty to max out the Triton at 90 watts.

this is exactly the kind of information I am looking for so 2 6v bulbs to put a load on, did u run all the 12v wires or can i just chop it back to the bare necessities i.e. one 12v pos one 12v neg and the same for the 5v for the bulbs

hope u dont mind me picking your brain this is my first time building anything like this and even though I have lots of ps's i would like to get it right on the first try

No problem, I sure am no expert. I used only one yellow and a black for the 12 volt and the ground. I think they are 16 gage or whatever so 1 lead is plenty big enough for the small current of 10 amps or less. Same with the 5 volt side (it is the red wire) and there's no use for the -12 volt lead either. Lots of people say to bundle all the like wires together and think they are necessary. go figure, lol.

I happened to find just one single connector that had all the wires I needed.

I'll add what I know (or what I think I know)
I've taken a few of these supplies apart for components. The 12 fan at the end of a PVC pipe makes a good cooling tube for flight batteries, etc. The load on the 5 Volt lead is required otherwise the supply doesn't cut on. This protects the CPU which needs the 3.3 volts and the PCI bus which needs the -12 Volts. If you look in the supply box, I'll bet you'll see all the yellow (12 V) leads connected together, so use the biggest one for the charger. You might put an ohm meter on the yellow leads and see if they are connected together. Remember that the black lead is also chassis ground so wire things up accordingly. I other words don't expect the 12 volts to be isolated from ground.
