Dugh?????????? Here's a dumb question. When I check my rx batteries with a standard r/c volt meter they often read way over 4.8 volts. How does a 4.8 volt battery get more than 5.5 volts? Shouldn't it just register 4.8 volts when fully charged?

actually, 4.8 v is almost dead and 5.4-5.5 is fully charged and that is assuming that your tester puts a load on it.

On my tester, not loaded, a 1.2 cell when charged will read 1.39 so that works out to 5.56 volts. When the cell is discharged it will read 1.1 so that works out to 4.4 volts.

i have to agree that 1.2 is nominal for one cell, and when fully charged it should have 1.45 volts per cell. however a pack that is at 4.8 volts is not almost dead. this is the level that will provide longer than any other level. until you get to 4.8 you are running on the top. the battery (a group of individual cells) is not unsafe for flight until it is below 4.8 and dead at 1.1 v per cell. my 9ZHP will alarm when trannie batt gets to 9.2 volts and is considered unsafe below that. 9.6 is normal but most modelers will recharge their trans batt before they let them get to 9.6v and then complain that either the reciever batts or trannie batt don't last long enough. if they would use the radio with the right voltage they would probably get much more than they expect from them. i fly all day on my heli's on one charge and my fellow flyers spend all day charging their radios. c-ya

I see 5.67v regularly after an overnight charge on my 4.8v RX packs. What are other people seeing?

My $.02,

4.8 volts without a load is dead. 4.8 with a load (servo's...) is what the batt is supposed to do.

Check the batts with a load ~200ma. and 4.8 would be fine. The voltage drops with a load.

4.8 static will drop to maybe 4.4 with a load and may not have enough power to run your servo's. Ever see one of those graphs? When you get to the end of the usable part, the voltage drops off like crazy. Good chance of crashing In my opinion.
