I just checked my engine list, I have about 8 MDS, I have one each new unrun 1.48 and one 2.18. One .78 and one 1.48 are converted to Diesel. I have (2) 2.18s and (3) 1.48s altogether. If you use 5% or less nitro and 20% castor oil they are fine engines.

maybe they've improved on their chroming ability of the sleeves. the ones i had were about 10 or so yrs ago and everyone around here who bought them had problems with the sleeve lining pealing.

How do you get Diesel conversion heads for oddball engines?

I have an MDS .48 that came on a prebuilt model that I bought. Turning it over, it feels really good. I was quite surprised, to be honest with you.

That's a good point.

If I get on the phone with Bob, I don't get off for over an hour. This old feller (me) has, of all things, developed a goiter in my later years, making it difficult to talk for more than a couple of minutes at a time (pressure on the larynx). I enjoy Bob's banter, he is one interesting fellow, but I can't hang in there very long on the phone these days. It's killed amateur radio for me on phone too. Thankfully, there are still the digital modes and CW (code) still available.

I have no idea what other engine would share the same cylinder head pattern as the MDS. Anyone?

Hello; My worst all-time engine was a Webra silverline 40, I should have wondered when I bought it brand new for $30. There were 4 other webra's at our field but the one I got just wouldn't run well for any length of time. I have gone over to four strokes exclusively now, and have owned some pretty good two strokes (os TT and Enya) but that Webra put me off two strokes forever.

I have a few Fox's, they seem to run okay if you set the low speed needle first, then the high speed.

Normally, Webra engines are premium products. I remember the Silverlines from the early 1990's. They were Webra's economy engine line. They were "rough" from the factory, but if made properly by Webra and broken-in properly, by the owner, they would turn into long lasting power producers. Of course, you have to get them started before you can break them in and once running, you had to run them very rich for an hour or so before the ring would come into round. Webra used hard metals in their construction, so break-in could be a lengthy process. What did you have when finished? An engine with the power of an OS .46LA that would run nearly forever if you kept some form of protectant in the crankcase to preserve the ball bearings between runs. Nothing fancy, but a fine, reliable engine.

Doc, I can't imagine the Webra SilverLine .40 giving you trouble, I bought a SilverLine .40 and .61 together for $69.00 both are fine engines. You got a lemon I guess.

For me it was the HP 21 4 cycle. Neat looking but heavy and put out no more power than a good Cox TD 049! Would barely fly a 3 channel "Pronto"...

I agree that the VT21 is a woefully weak motor -- but they're so quiet and will turn almost any size prop -- so they're great for laid-back sunday afternoon flying in a lightly-loaded model just doing touch-and-goes.

When MECOA took over Mfg. of the VT .21 and .49 they tweaked both to be more powerful.

Hi!
If you had asked me 43 years ago I would definitely say OS Pet .10! I can still remember how I struggled to get it starting.... And the joy for a 9 year old when it finally did start.

Now I would say: Russian, 7cc "Raduga", CL-engine! Nothing can come close to it!

You sure you do not have OS mixed up with MDS when talking about peeled liners. OS is the company that had peeling problems with there high tech "ABL" technology.

You're right David, peeling liners was never a problem with MDS engines.
