That's a very good looking installation but the very long standoffs, at least for me, are a cause of concern. There's a lot of torque that will be transmitted to those long legs when the engine is running. Each cycle of the throttle will transmit most of the engine torque to the standoffs, and much less will make to the airframe. What's the possibility of one, and then more, of the engine mounting lugs eventually twisting off, or a bolt being pulled through the firewall over a period of time?

Better would be some type of plate at the engine end of the standoffs, with another 1/3 of the distance from the firewall to tie the legs together. A pair of wood blocks, each attached to a pair of mounting lugs would be bertter still.

That's a great idea Silversurfer, thanks for the suggestion as I have been staring at those long spacers myself.

Although I have seen DA50's on 3" long spacers and they have twice the torque that this engine has and my spacers are only 2.5 inches.

Since I don't have any spacers that are long enough in one piece ( the ones in the picture are 1/4' too short to clear the cowling) I may use two lengths of spacers with a plate in the middle to tie them all together so they don't twist with torque OR I could just make an extension for the engine box with a new firewall but will be heavier than the spacers with a torque plate.

Either way I am als concerned about the effect of torque trying to twist the spacers and will revise or beef it up B4 flying.

Here are some pics without cowl.

Rain, rain, rain and now a tornado!! Sorry I haven't got to maiden the Laser with the GF26I engine due to bad weather.

We should all applaud CRRCpro group and Western Hobbies, the US distributor for this engine, for taking the time to go through this prototype engine evaluation program instead of just rushing to market another Chinese engine without good quality control.

YEEEHAAA!!!!!!!!

i got my engine running!!!. im still using my old 45cc ignition...but i have it all working. and yes i have it running on petrol(gasoline) this time using a 25:1 mineral oil mix.

something i have noticed...my engine LOVES running backwards!!. its a effort to get it to run forwards at times. i think i have around an hour total run time now. still working out the nasty vibration but have still to re-work the woodruff key in the hope that its the problem.

i have a video clip of it running but cant get it off my phone...will try and get it on here ASAP.

next step is to get my airframe up to speed ready for this engine.

cheers

The engine may have the ignition way too much advanced.
Are you running the RCexl ignition? If not, take out the woodruff key, clean and degrease the taper, and refit the prop driver (without the key) to match an ignition point between 20 and 30 degrees before top dead center.
It will be easy to hear if the ignition is retarded too much, but excess vibration should be gone.

i got an email from the factory telling me that the new CDI's are on their way. i will wait for it to arrive before i start playing with woodruff key location. for now i will keep using my GF45 ignition just to get run time on the engine.

i have also gotten the airframe i will be using out of the storage room and will be getting it sorted ready to take this engine.

cheers

Hey Hardtop, I think Pe Reivers may be right that your ignition is too far advanced. My Ryobi conversions with a fixed CH ignition vibrrated like heck at the low end do to too much advance. When I switched to an auto advance ignition the vibration all went away.

yeah i think the timing is a little out using a different ignition meant for a different engine. but i will still wait for this new cdi unit to show up and see what happens from there. i'll go back and re-balance the prop and check the key isn't pushing the extension shaft off centre.

cheers

Hardtop,
Check the taper in the prop driver, and the match to the crankshaft taper. On all three engines I checked, there was a clear mismatched which caused the prop driver to wobble. Trueing up the driver in my old trusted Myford ML7 cured it.
