I seem to recall seeing a small electric or glow RC airplane that had a fabric rogallo style hang-glider wing somewhere, but I can't recall where. Maybe it's been discontinued.

I think it had a little pilot riding the fuselage like a motorcycle and may have had a cute name like "Sky Rider".

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I thought it used to show up in every Tower Hobbies sale flyer, but now that I'm looking for it I can't find it.

I'd be interested in any other Rogallo-wing style RC plane as well. I recently saw a picture of a military RC plane mentioned at the back of one of the RC magazine and I'm intrigued. You can see the military one here:

Thanks for any ideas!

Charles.

Charles,
The September 1990 issue of Model Airplane News has a construction article for building a Rogallo Wing to use with a regular model airplane fuselage.

This sounds exciting, but their website doesn't list back issues beyond about 2003. Would you consider making me a copy of yours? I'll email the magazine too and see what they can do too.

Thanks,

Charles.

In response to chall. Hobby People had one like he was talking about. I have one somewhere around, just can't find it right now. Ebay list them everyone once in a while. Try a search. The best one I have seen so far is the Gymallo from Bob's Little Airplane Company at www.blac.net. One of the magazines had a scaled down version of it for one of the indoor fun flys. I bought one of Bob's kits. Very easy and inexpensive to put together. Two versions of it depending if you are going to fly indoor or out. Price was resonably for the kit too.

Charles, you may be interested in the Kyosho Autokite XP.

This is a .10 to .15 sized Rogallo wing ARF model. No doubt it could be converted to electric if you wished. A mate of mine has one, I have some stick time on it, wonderfull little machine. My mate uses a Thunder Tiger GP15 on his, cheap, very reliable, easy to start and more than enough power, can even loop it, and cruises for hours at low throttle. This thing flies so well I think you would have to make a concerted effort to crash it. Ideal for learning to fly without an instructor. Very relaxing to fly, it won't stall and no matter what manuevre you try, simply let go the sticks and it comes out straight and level. Can handle a breeze, but flies at walking speed. Really a nice little model, with a true Rogallo wing.

I checked Kyosho's product listing and it isn't there, maybe discontinued, but try e-Bay or the markets. Price I dunno, but it's well worth looking into.

Cheers from the Barfly.

I built my own rogallo wing based *kite* plane, what fun to fly!!! X3

if anyone wants, i can post pics of it here to use as reference. I've flown it both at a park and a flying field for regular hobbiyists, and have now, four or more folks wanting to build a rogallo wing like mine ^^

Have to concur with Barfly. I bought my Kyosho AutoKite to self-teach myself to fly. It did that job superbly! I'm running an OS 15LA and it's got a buttload (highly technical term) of power. A couple things I've notice though. Not show-stoppers, just things to consider. The thing is fairly top heavy, especially since it's got narrow landing gear. Not a huge deal, just that it doesn't like crosswinds on the ground and tends to tip over to the side and drag a "wingtip" when confronted by them. Have yet to do any damage though. Secondly, has no steerable tail wheel, so again, not great for crosswind takeoff. However, it flies so slowly, you can almost always point it into the wind. Another thing I've noticed is that if you get too much speed on it, say in a fast descent, the trailing edge of the wing starts flopping so badly that it disturbs the airflow across the rudder. Full throw either way and it barely turns. Solution is simple though, pull up to stop the wing flopping (smooth the airflow), and you're back in business...it will turn on a dime. I too have looped mine, and it's pretty funny to watch. Have heard that some have experienced success with inverted flight, but I'm not quite ready to test the Gods of airplane structure that much just yet. Tons of fun to fly and always a it at the field. Mine flies all day at 1/2 power. I get bored before I run out of gas.

I designed and built my own Rogallo wing plane. It was very easy to fly once I got the bugs out of it.

This was my first attempt. It flew but not well.

Here is my second design. I flew that one a lot. The wing mount bolt gave out mid flight and ended that one.

This is a discussion on making auto folding wings. I too had issues taxiing this plane with any wind. It just kept tipping over. I've since moved on to other projects, but I'll return to this one eventually.

I remember that Model Airplane News article about building a rogallo wing. I built one right after getting the magazine by using a high wing fuselage .25 size glow plane and an old kite. I made the kite angle of attack adjustable, and added kite line to the aft most section of centerline dowel to the tail. I think a couple of other lines went to the landing gear and kite tips. It worked really great- I'd have to liken it to an autogyro in terms of flying characteristics. I'd imagine just about anyone could fly it. I'd love to see the old article of MAN again too; maybe this time build a smaller electric version.
