So I've finally got my cash together for my new T-Rex. I think I'm getting the 450SE V2 (the real V2), the JR digital servo set, and the GY401. I've got a list of spare parts I should buy from this forum at least to start off with. I've spent probably 10 hours so far in the sim and can hover for short periods of time before it gets away from me and starts sliding. I'm still working it. I plan to do the RADD method on the real heli and follow it religously. I know crashes are inevitable, but I'm not rich enough to just give them away.

My main question is what kind of battery to get, and what kind of charger/balancer. There are so many I want to cry. The V2 comes with the align 3 cell 2100mah battery, but I want to have at least 3 packs. Are these align batts good enough for the person who is learning, or should I just go with Thunderpower? Since I'm just learning I don't need the nuts right from the get-go I don't think. Also, what's the best charger for just the Lipo's on this Rex, I don't need chargers that do all the other kinds of batteries. I don't plan on having much more than the Rex for quite some time.

Thanks!

Oh well I couldn't wait, I just went with the cheapo Align charger and some thunder power (it comes with one align battery):

Align T-REX 450SE V2/Gy401/S9650/ (3) HS65-HB
Thunder Power 2070mAh 3S 11.1V Li-Po, 13GA Battery (2 of these)
Align New Lithium Battery Balance Charger

Spare Parts:

Align T-Rex 450 315MM FIBER ROTOR BLADE WHT/BLUE
T-Rex 450XL HIGH STRENGTH MAIN GEAR BLUE
Align T-Rex 450 LANDING SKID SET/BLACK
T-Rex 450X Main Shaft
T-Rex 450X Feathering Shaft

How does that look? Am I missing anything for just starting out?

Um, if it's not too late, cancel the order for the fiber blades.

Get 325 pro wood blades instead, they won't damage nearly as much stuff if you crash.

Also get some carbon tail blades, the uniform black (no weave pattern) Align ones. $8 is a pretty cheap gyro upgrade, it even makes a difference with a 401.

Carbon booms may be twice the price, but they tend to last six times as many crashes too.

I'll order up some woodies soon, think the heli comes with at least one pair. I'll also get the tail rotors when I get some more blades. I ordered 2 regular flybars and will order a carbon one once I've torn thru the ones I have.

Thanks all for your input, I'm really excided, can't wait for it to get here.

if you are using the JR servo set that includes the DS285 servos, then you better stockup on servo gears. they strip out easily if you breathe on them. of course if you never crash..... Others recommend the Hitec HS65mg for the ele, ail, and pitch. the JR3400 is good for the gyro from what i hear. after stripping gears 3 times on the DS285 with just a semi-hard landing, i switched over to the hitecs. no problem since. the gears in the ds285 just seem real flimsy.

everything else you and the others posted looks good. have fun. you're gonna love flying helis.

Yeah I ended up with the Hitec 65s on the cyclic and the 9650 on the tail. It should all be here tomorrow, I can't wait!

It may pay to get a spare screws parts bag. A crash causes the feather shaft to break and the small rubber O rings and Aluminium spacers may be lost. Although there are a few spares with the kit Ive bought some extras.

The Align charger works fine. Its a bit slower than my other chargers charging at 1C (2.2A).

Also consider buying a separate low voltage alarm for the lipos.
Ive bought a Low voltage alarm and LED. Ive set it to go off when the batteries require 80% to recharge (as some flyers have recommened on this site).
The Align ESC set at the most conservative setting cuts out below the 80% rule.

I would be interested to hear from others who just use the align ESC cutout. What is the lifespan of your lipo batteries.
They say its better to forego the last 30s-1min of flying to save your batteries.

Others may wish to comment on that.

Radio is DX6, I know the DX7 is what's reccommended, but I got a new DX6 TX/RX off a buddy for $100, he never used it. Too good a deal to pass up. I should have picked up a spare screw bag, I'll do that once it's built and I order some more blades. I have been looking at the voltage alarm/LED thing. I think I'll invest in one, I'm not a big fan of spending $80 on a battery.

Got my kit today, everything seems to be in order. I ordered from www.powerhobby.com, I got the SE kit (it's actually not the REAL V2, but the one with the updated main gear, battery, etc) plus the 3 65HB servos, GY401, and the S6950 all for $599 - free shipping too. Not a bad deal, and I can't really find that good of deal much anywhere else. If anyone is interested:

Thanks again for all the suggestions so far, I'm sure I'll be back once I start putting it together.

Yes there is a lot of false advertising going on by sellers of the Trex 450 V2. It appears the servo boxes in that photo cover the part of the box that would have V2 on it.

I recieved the updated V1 (advertised as a V2 as well). Thought Iwas getting the new Align V2.

They are a GREAT heli though. Very pleased with it.

Yeah I got my 450 from powerhobby as well, off a ebay auction. Took a while for shipping, they sent the battery and servos seperate. First 2 batts they sent never showed up, had them UPS the second set.

They did advertise as a V2, you may want to give them a call, talk to Mohammed and let him know there is a real V2 now, so they stop advertising they have a V2 at that price.

as for the charger, the 1010C charger and a blancer is nice
