The Hobbico Superstar 40 had aluminum tank tubes, I bought it second hand but it was as it came from t-h according to the owner

phillybaby
The exposed portion of the tube and where it enters the bung seal is what You are getting at, right? and these are copper not brass? Is it the grey rubber bung? could be a chemical reaction.

I duno just strange, some oxidizing effect.

Gentlemen,
Worn Boots asked me to come over and address the brass tubing corrosion problem.
I'm not a chemical engineer but I have noticed that nitromethane will attack many types of brass including some of the popular brass tubing stock found with some tank manufacturers. The brass will turn black and then get pitted and finally fail. This can happen from the inside or the outside.
An additional factor is that the burnt exhaust gasses, if vented into the tank will accelerate this since it contains nitric acid (if not mistaken) if nitromethane is in the fuel.

I always use the nylon or plastic tubing that comes in some of the popular tanks now. Just heat it up with a heat gun and it bends any way you want it.

Thanks fuelman, glad to see i've not invented anything new here and have to go and make some money out of it
as for the bung causing a reaction... any covered part is ok, as is any exposed part outside the tank. what still confuses me is why is it right at tank entry on the vents when the whole tube should be effected the same way and amount, again, vibration? might also explaine why a solid clunk can break up because it rattles around all flight.
I normally use the SLEC all plastic tanks and coated metal parts, but sometimes kits come with these useless things

what was the original question again?
oh yer, we dont want to bend brass now, use plastic and a heat gun

Well I guess I will start using the plastic tubing, and won't have to worry over it deteriorating. I am getting back into the hobby after a few years away, so this may be a good heads up'

Thank's all; Dan Z (vibration does make sense too, phillybaby)

Thanks Fuelman for joining us. Now, what about aluminum tubing.... any problems with that???

Also, where can we get ahold of some plastic or nylon tubing like you are talking about?

Thanks a bunch!

Ernie

You can buy 1/8" nylon tubing in 25ft. rolls at NAPA store. I sometimes use the 1/4" for outer push rod housings for wire push rods, nice & cheap!! Easy to get straight, just put 1/8" welding rod inside , heat with heat gun & roll on a flat surface .>>>big max 1935

I usually just bend brass tube around my thumb with no problem. I have a tubing bender that I bought in Germany a couple years ago made by Graupner I think. It has what looks like a pulley wheel on it that is supposed to keep the tubing from collapsing. It does a good job, but not noticeably better than my thumb.

I've never had a problem with a dubro tank. I did have a Hanger 9 tank that the cap fell off on the first time out so I don't use Hanger 9 tanks any more. Screw on tops on plastic are a bad idea anyway.

I have aluminum fuel tubing on one of my test stand tanks with literaly hundreds of gallons of fuel through those lines from zero nitro to 75% nitro and have not noticed any corrosion problems, at least yet.

I prefer the plastic stuff because I can give it a quick pass with a heat gun and shape it any way I like without any worries of pinching it shut or having sharp ends which can cut into the silicone fuel tubing when slipping it on or off. The non metalic tubing also will not corrode like some of the brass tubing.

I do not have a source for the plastic tubing, one of the posts above mentions his source for what he uses.
