Thanks Bob, Is that with our without that cowl you had on the front? I bet that thing addes some weight. I'm gonna check where mine is at right now, before paint. See how I fair. Anyone else have any weights on theirs? I'm curious how I come out.

What have you been up to bob? Flying season must be over up there. Anything started yet?

Sean:

That was without the cowl and associated plywood that mounted it.

It kinda sucks up here. Snow, freezing rain, cold, windy. Typical for northern Mich this time of year.

I completed a Sig Wonder which I flew quite a bit before the weather moved in, assembled a Lanier Mariner 40 ARF, and am working on a Topflite 1/7 P-51. Next project will be either a 63" Spad XIII (The RCM plans) or a Bob Price 63" PBY.

Looks nice Bob, what's the wingspan on that Mustang?

I'm ready to paint just waiting on some warmer weather. I'm going to go ahead and set up to paint regardless. I'm going to build a small paint booth, get some heat and set up a fanning system. The Warbird Colors are not flammable or toxic. They are about like Latex. How is the best way to tape off the markings? I've probably always done those a hard way too. Is there an easier way than just tracing them on taping them off and painting? I was thinking about frisket paper, but never used it. I don't know anything about it.

It's the Gold Edition 65 incher.

If you have a surface that can take frisket, you should probably at least try it. The stuff is expensive, but it seems to do a much better job than masking tape, and comes off easier afterwards. I used it on the inside of my F-4 canopy, and you can see that it came out pretty good.

Sean,

For straight lines and shallow curves, 3M Fine Line tape (blue), found at Auto Suppy stores and elsewhere is probably the best. Low tack means the paint won't be pulled up and nice clean lines. I think the narrow (1/4" ) would work for the Crosses on your stick, the wider stuff is very good for stright lines. I haven't used the Frisket brand stuff, but do have a friend that does, great for more curvy stuff where a decal won't work like the canopy above.

DO NOT get the "Painters Blue Masking" tape found in the Big Box stores, it is for painting houses with thicker paints like Latex from a roller or brush. It does not work for spraying on a model.

Bob, I guess thats similar to the one I built long long ago. Mine isn't finished. But it's close. Probably I will finish it next and get some time on it. It was the last airplane I built.

Thanks Skylark! that's what I used to use and that's also the way I'm familiar with doing it. I've been hearing people talk about Frisket. I thought maybe I was missing something. My biggest problem had always been getting the paint too heavy. My tape lines are so heavy when I pull the tape. I guess I just need to pay a bit more attention and spend some more time setting up my gun.

Today is supposed to be almost 70 out! Blast I'm here at work! If the weather keeps looking this way I may take some vacation and paint!

Bob, the hurdle I ran into with my stang was the muffler. I couldn't find anything to get out of it. I wanted something a bit more steamlined and I didn't have a regular muffler for it. I used the Supre Tigre from my pattern ships and I always used a long tuned pipe on those. If I can get a muffler on it that's about all I need to do. A little more painting around the canopy is needed yet. I thought I might go looking for a new engine for it. Maybe there is something that uses a different type of exhaust that would let me keep the scale look. I could rebuild the cowling if I needed too.

Did you start a build thread for yours someplace? I'd like to tag onto it if you did.

Is the engine inverted? Which Super Tigre is it?

Hey!!! So what’s the deal here???? Hiding a good looking Stang from all of your friends like that??? Oh, by the way,...... now that you let the cat out of the bag, how about some pictures of these pattern planes you’ve been hiding as well.

As far as the muffler goes, Top flite makes one that is supposed to fit inside the cowling. But you’ll have to check to see if it will work on your engine.

Hey Bob, Yes, the engine is inverted. I don't remember what Supre Tigre it is anymore. It's a .61 I have the box and all the paperwork and it doesnt say anywhere what it is. I probably bought it in 1983 or so. I had an OS .61 FSR that blew up. I bought this to replace it. All I remember for sure is it was Schnuerle-ported and ABC. I even pulled the cowl off my stang to have a look. Nothing printed on the engine either.

Those mufflers Crash shows would be the ticket. I'll have to do some checking and see if they fit my engine. My guess is the muffler set ups didn't change much.

Crash, I'll see if I can round up some pictures of those pattern birds. I know there are some around someplace. I'll just have to scan em. I could pull em all out and take pictures of them but the retracts are out, no motor, no tuned pipe. They are more or less "naked" I have a Dirty Birdy, and a couple of self designed and scratch built. When I say self designed I mean a buddy I used to fly with designed and drew them. I built and flew em. There was still nothing that compared to sporting round in with my Sweet Stick. I sure hope this DUS flys like my Sweet Stick did.

We flew on top of this big hill. We called it the Hill. I would take that stick and fly low across the fields. I would actually look down on the airplane. It was probably 20 feet below me, you could see houses in the background etc. It was just the coolest looking site. You could literally fly down in that valley for as far as you could see and both directions. I can still see that white stick with the black crosses zipping along.

I would love to finish up the stang and fly it. Its not nearly as nice as the photos show. It wasn't finished very well. Id like to just rebuild it. But I figure I'll just fly the heck out of it and build more!

Sean:

I'm going to use a Slimline inverted pitts muffler in my p-51. Perhaps one of the ones they make would fit your ST. I know that muffler mounting bolt hole spacing is the same on a lot of "big block" engines.

The Invt PM gives the cleanest installation.

Don’t worry about the pictures if you don’t have them close at hand. I’m not trying to be a pain in the butt. Spend your free time on the Dus. I just didn’t know that you had a hanger full of nice planes!
