I got tied up with some work related junk and slowed up a bit. I'm hoping to finish up this weekend and work on getting the engine running. All I have left is to install the fuel tank, main gear and she will be ready to fly.

The engine has been sitting for about 25+ years. It was a beautiful running engine when I was flying. I always pulled the glow plug and put in a drop or two of oil when I stored them. I'm sure I did that. I notice she doesn't have much compression right now. Any thoughts on what I should do? Will it get compression when I get some fuel in it and work on getting it running? Or should I tear it down and look it over?

Is the thottle wide open when you're trying it?

You might want to put some more oil in the glow plug hole, and through the backplate into the crankcase, and just turn it over a bunch of times without the plug in it. It may be that castor oil gum on the cylinder and piston are making it sticky, so it won't "pop" like they usually do. If ordinary lube oil doesn't work, try spraying some WD-40 in there. It will dissolve most nasty stuff and won't hurt anything.

The week after St. Louis I took mine to the "Jersey Coast Sport Fliers", another club I belong to, and passed my pilot's test. The old Stick made me look good, even when she ran out of fuel just after the trim test, and the flaps helped me to make a decent deadstick, which is also part of it.

If I had it to do over, I would have put my tail feather servos in the back like you did. Mine came out so nose heavy. You don't want to know how much lead is in it's tail.

Status: offline 		Very nice Allen. I''ve not had any time at all to work on mine. Hopefully I can get her finished up this week yet. Although the weather went south here in the south. Cold and windy so I guess I''ll have a little time.

Bob, I''ve had the throttle in various settings while turning it over. There is a "little" pop there but not much. There just isn''t much compression. I''m gonna get some more oil down in it and pull the back plate off like you suggested. If I don''t get any I''ll try some WD-40 then. There isn''t much pop or compression.

Maybe it will motivate me to stay up late or something. I'm going to take some vacation next week. That should help me finish up.

Status: offline 		I pulled the plug and sprayed a little WD40 in there and I've got some compression back. Nice pop too. But, I notice the top of the piston head was "black" with gunk. Do you think I should tear this thing apart and give it a good cleaning? I've got decent compression now.

Thoughts? I'm about ready to fire it up. I'm off on vacation the rest of the week so I intend to finish this girl up.

Status: offline 		Sounds like you cleaned off some old gummed up castor oil. Instead of taking it apart, I think I'd repeat the WD 40 treatment until the gunk subsides a bit.

Status: offline 		Well other than a few "un-necessary" aesthitic items I'm ready to go!!!!! I'll probably try getting the engine to run before going out to the field.

I had bought "large" fuel line and drilled the firewall before trying it. It was really too big for the "nipple" on the muffler. So I went back to the medium line. My holes in the firewall are just a tad too big now. I can use the larger diameter fuel line on the carb so I have one hole that is a little big. Would you guys worry about it? Should I try to fill it somehow to keep fuel out? The compartement has been fuelproofed.

I'll try to post up some pics tomorrow of my radio installation. If I build another I'll do a few things different but it's gonna fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a couple shots of the radio installation.

I also still have my first radio. Anyone old enough to recognize this? I still like this radio. The sticks have a much nicer feel than any new radio I've ever tried. Even my now old Futaba that replaced this one. If I thought the frequencies that it used were still good, I may buy batteries and use it again!!!

BTW, maybe I missed something, but do you have to remove the wing to turn off the receiver? It looks like the switch is mounted on the inside...
