Sean:

I have the Great Planes DR-1 (out of production), 60" wingspan. The Camel is the Hangar 9 ARF, about 65" wingspan.

Is your Mustang the 60 size?

Hi ya Bob,
Yes, my 51 is the .60 size. I built it a long time ago and never finished it. Look back on this thread to post # 281 for the pictures.

It's really rough looking. It sat in my dad's garage for a long time. There is some cracking on it, some of the surfaces have swelled and don't move smoothly. I'm not really sure what to do with it. It seems like the amount of work to get it flyable is more than it would be worth. But it's never been flown. I would like to just get it flyable and fly the heck out of it. But then again the more I look the more it looks like it will take. I'm not sure starting over wouldn't be a good solution!

I painted it with automotive enamel with a clear coate. Once i get back into fying I'll have to make a decision with it.

Guys, for some reason I have misplaced my plans I had on the computer that someone had sent me in PDF format. Can anyone direct me to a set of plans in that form. Thanks Keith

Hi Frank,
No I havent' maidened her yet. The weather has been really aweful here. That shouldn't be an excuse though. I'm a bit strapped for cash and can't find it to join the local club. I've also been going back and forth on which club to join. I've got two choices.

I bought some fuel to get the motor running over the long weekend. I thought I had some new glow plugs in my flying box but found out after the hobby store closed I was wrong! So, I'll plan to get the engine running this week then I'll get the membership to a club and with any luck I'll fly her here in the next two weeks. I'm planning to video it and post it for everyone.

I also figured out that I hooked my nose gear up wrong. I never even thought about it. I had a 50/50 shot and got it wrong! At least I caught it. So that gave me something to do over the weekend. Like my wife and kids don't find enough for me. I've also been up to some "extras". I'll post some pics soon!

Here is a link to some online plans I saw a while back, PDF Stick . Here is another one I had found once a while back too.

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for sticking with me. I sure have found a way to drag this thing out a long time!!!! It should have been built and flown in a month or two. I underestimated how hard it is with a family and kids!!!! But I'll be flying soon!

Sean,

Sorry to hear about it all. I have a couple of kids myself. I know they are a very expensive hobby in themselves. Both for time and money! I know when you do maiden that Stick you are going to love it!
Our weather has been uncooperative as well. Saturday, I took my Stick to the club. We had about 13 - 15 mph winds out of the East. It made for a nice cross wind breeze. The Stick hardly knows it is windy up there. I don't mind flying in the wind, it is the landings that can be a handful. But, it wasn't that bad. One go around to shake of the winter nonflying and it settled down very nicely into the wind all the way down. I have a 10oz fuel tank with a OSFXi up front. I just changed props to an APC 10x7 before the flight and with it I was getting almost 13,000 rpm. I like to fly the stick fast, it was moving around pretty good. I have to time myself as I only had about an ounce of fuel left in the tank.
I have other planes, but I seem to always take a Stick. I am actually building another one from my RCM plans. This one with a flat wing ( No dehidrahl). And, I have a new Magnum XL.53 I am going to mount on the firewall.

Good luck Sean, I look forward to hearing about your maiden with your Stick.

Hey Frank,
Mostly here it's been rain and wind. We have had more rain this spring than I can remember in a long time. Tonite would have been absolutely perfect to maiden!!! It was 65 degrees and ZERO wind. The sky was clear and the nicest shade of blue I've ever seen!

What prop were you using before you switched to the 10X7? My HB .40 PDP boasts that it turns a practical RPM of 19,000. I used a 10X7 with it on my .40 size Sweet Stick. It was fast as heck too. I think I could point the nose up with that Sweet Stick and climb forever too! I never tached the engine to see what it was turning. I have been tempted to try an 11X7 on the Ugly Stick. I don't have a tach however to check the RPMs with the 11X7. Maybe someone at the club would have one I could try??

an old friend of mine loved those HB engines. he had this one with an OS carb running on a Phantasy and that thing was a good match for that airplane.

Sean.

I tried a wood prop first a Topflite 10x6 it was not a big deal. Then I tried a 11x6 again a wood prop. I had good vertical, but not alot of speed. I tried a master airscrew 10x6, 10x8, and settled on the Masterascrew 10x7. Which is what I pulled the stick on for most of last summer. It was ok. I kept telling myself though that I wished I had a .52 on it for some speed. I actually bought a Magnum XL.53 to put on this plane. But, I love this APC prop. I have read here on RC Universe over and over again how people love them. Now I know why. It is the first time that I wasn't flying around at WOT. Maybe I will have a longer life on that engine than I at first thought.

The weather here in the Chicago south western suburbs really blows this year! (Rain & wind). It is forcast for showers with 20mph winds tomorrow. In order to get some flight time I am flying in the wind.

Sunday is looking good "81 degrees with partly cloudy skies and 8 mph forcast. Maybe it won't change.

This is my first build in a lot of years. I pulled out the set of plans from my dad's Jensen Ugly Stick. He built this in the late 60s I'm sure. Last Saturday I woke up to about 4 inches of snow here in Virginia. Good day to start building! So, I'm finally getting started.

Sean

Was just doing a drive-by on the forums list when I saw "Jensen", and had to stop and check this out. I have probably built at least 50 original Ugly Stiks from the Jensen kit and plans while working at Ken's Hobby Den in El Monte, Ca...the main hangout/hobby shop for Whittier Narrows in So Cal. We sold them as ARC's and ARF's for the amazing (today) price of, I think, $100 or $125 (covered). I worked at Ken's while attending Don Bosco Tech in nearby Rosemead in the late 70's. I could knock one out in just a couple hours, we had jigs for the wings and fuse.

It was one of my favorite planes, I had a bunch, most with K&B/Veco 61's. I even had a hot rod version with a Rossi 61 and pipe. Modded one with taildragger LG on top and trike gear on the bottom (landing inverted trick), we even built several carrying 64 oz. of fuel to fly in the MD charity, AMA-run Trans-America race in '79 (or '78, not sure now) as part of the "leg K" team (SGVRCL). Fun times.

Enjoy it and good luck with the maiden!

Hey Barry,
Yes, they sure are easy to build. I should have had this thing done in no time flat. I took my time for a variety of reasons. Biggest one was I just didn't have any!!!! I actually kept a little log book and while I started it over a year ago, I don't have much time in it. I'll take a look and see but It's well under 40 hours I'm sure.

Frank, I said in an earlier post that I ran a 10X6 on it before. But that was wrong, I used to run Master Airscrew 10X7's. I agree with you about those props. I recall that for some reason they were much better than anything else. I also like Zinger Wood props. I never had real good luck with the Top Flite wooden props. I still have the old Master Airscrews that I ran. It doesn't look like they changed over the years.

I'm not familiar with the APC prop you mentioned.

Sean,

Take a look at these. I tried one and I am hooked.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LX1548&P=7

Have a good weekend. The weather is forcast for Sunday partly cloudy and 11 mph winds out of West, Northwest. I know where I'm going on Sunday morning. I will bring a big stick, and maybe I will maiden a Sig 4*40.

Have a good one.
