For what's it worth, I'd never risk an airplane that I had that much work in to an engine that I can't get running dead reliably at home.

Bob, nice looking Camel! The pilot looks familiar!!!!! On my dad's DUS he hooked Snoopy's head to the rudder linkage. When he turned the rudder snoopy's head turned!

Skylark, I pulled the back cover off and I'm checking her out now. I think it's just the old gummed castor oil but I'm not sure. I agree though, $13.00 is probably well worth it! I'm going to pull her all the way apart now and see what it looks like. From what I see so far no rust but I don't have them out and in my hands yet.

Thanks for the website. They have all the parts I would need. Gaskets everything. I'm going to give her a good cleaning. I read that a crock pot and anti freeze will clean them up like new. I might give that a go and then replace the bearings. Am I correct in that the bearings are the only thing inside that will rust?

Unfortunately the engine mount I used will take some real re-work to get my Supre Tigre on it. I'm also afraid that if I put the Tigre on the front I won't put the old HB on anyway! Decisions decisions! I'm going back downstairs now to check it out closer. I don't have a muffler for the Supre Tigre. So I buy a muffler or bearings. Either way I got to spend a little more money. At least this time it is a little more money!

Anything with iron in it, like the steel crank shaft, bearings, rings (if any) and some liners can rust. Many linings are plated with chrome or nickle and that usually will keep any rust at bay or the lining may be Chrome/Nickle pated brass (ABC type engines). I may be wrong on some finer points, but I think generally I have it correct.

Boca did have detailed instructions on getting the old bearings out and the new ones in, Can't remember if they came with the bearings or were on line.

If memory serves me, I think I ordered the bearings on a Friday and had them in hand on Tuesday. Great Job by Boca.

Status: offline 		Here are a couple pictures. you can see how much built up gunk / junk is in it. Perhaps all that build up helped seal in some oil and prevented rust? I did't have a puller to get the shaft off. I think I have a small one at work.

well it will be off to the field tomorrow but without plane now. I'm gonna at least get someone else airplane and stick in my hands!

Status: offline 		Well, I got down to the field and got my hands on a transmitter! After my new friend got the Kadet a "couple of mistakes high" he let me have control. After a tank full of figure eights getting a little lower all the time (easier to see) I felt like I had never stopped flying. The second flight he asked me if I wanted to taxi it over to the take off position, of course that seemed easy enough! So I taxied her over and then took off. Made about 4 or 5 landings (and take offs) and it seemed pretty good. Then the sun went down

The skills are all still there. It's sight and depth perception that has gotten a bit stale!!!! I dont' see like I used to and it will take a while to get back my sense back in that way.

The DUS will be up soon. Stay tuned.

how do you feel about using form a gasket on the front and rear of the case? If I buy the bearings from Boca where you suggested I can save some $$$$ but they don't offer the gaskets. The price is much higher from Mecoa but they have the gaskets for almost nothing. They aren't worth ordering by themselves though.

I would rather order them from Boca and just use some of the high temp forma gasket unless you think that's a problem.

I went to my first club meeting and joined the local club while I was there. What a great bunch of guys!!!! One guy gave me a brand new O.S. 40 LA to help me get airborne and another gave me a gently used Stryker. Complete with 2 batteries and a charger! I also came home with a nice electric starter too! I was very blessed by their generosity and excitement to see me get back into flying!

I'm a little afraid of the O.S. 40 having enough power to fly my DUS. It's much smaller than my HB and it would require remounting too. If I'm gonna remount I may as well remount my Supre Tigre 61. But the obvious choice is to replace the bearings in my HB and use it. The bearings from Boca are only $13.00 for the set. That's gotta be worth it. I'm still not convinced I need them but for #13.00 better safe than sorry.

The "Form-A-Gasket" should work if used sparingly. Use just enough to coat the mating surfaces lightly and assemble. What you don't want is squeeze out inside the case and getting into the moving parts (ie: new bearings). Tighten the screws until just snug, let the "FAG" completely dry (overnight) and then tighten the screws the rest of the way. I have also used a paper bag (brown paper) to make a gasket, soaked it in oil (3 in One) and did not have any problems. The purpose of the gasket is to prevent air from being sucked into the case as the piston goes to TDC sucking fuel/air mix in through the carb and crankshaft. Then as the piston comes back down the mix is forced up the by-pass ports and into the combustion chamber. A basic, simple explination but you get the idea.

Bearings - That happens, being out of stock. You could go to the next price level up .Get your Super Tiger mount and put it on the nose of the DUS. Many of todays 40s are as powerful as many of the .60s of 25+ years ago but you may need nose weight to balance so the ST would be the way to go. If you find you need tail weight, then maybe the 40 LA.

The next price level up is double! They go from $16.00 to $33.00. It's a good engine and all but if I went to that good of a bearing I would have to rebuild a little more! Probably a new piston and sleeve then too. I don't wanna spend that much at least right now.

I dropped by the local Hobby Shop and there was a fella there who was very knowledeable with motors. He looked it over and was 100% sure that there was no rust on the bearings. I was 95% sure but didn't wanna take a chance. Based on his observations I think I'm gonna put it back together and run it. After the flying season I may tear it down and replace the bearings then. However if I don't have a lick of trouble my daddy always said dont' fix what ain't broke!

If Boca hadn't been out of stock on the bearings I would probably go ahead and replace them now but I'm pretty certain I'm ok. I bought some non asbestos gasket material, high temp, and made a gasket. It's good up to 350 degrees. The motors don't get that hot, do they?

Thanks for the advice Skylark. It was all good advice and I appreciate it. Finding the Mecoa sight and Boca bearings was a great find. Now I know where to get parts. I did pull off my head. Am I ok to re-use the gaskets there? There were two very thin pieces of metal gasket. They should be good for one more shot, shouldn't they? I understand they are made to compress once or twice only.

I put the engine back together this evening and I'm gonna try running her tomorrow evening. I wasnt' thinking when i bought the gasket material about thickness. The material I got is fairly thick at 1/32". I'm sure the old gasket was less than that. Do you think that will cause any problems with the back plate being slightly further back because of that thicker gasket? It just hit me when I cut it out I put it on. That back plate actually goes inside the motor some. I should have gotten the red formagasket or even made one from a paper bag like you mentioned.

Any thoughts on the different position??

It may not seem like much but the thicker gasket may increase the volume of the crank case enough to affect fuel draw. If the original gaskets are not torn in the perimeter of the cover and only at the screw holes, use the originals, the brown paper bag ones or order them from Mecoa. Good luck, I will be out of town for a few days.

That's exactly what I thought. I don't know how thick the original gasket was. It was somewhat thick but it was melted mush on the case when I pulled it. It took me forever to get it off. I'll have to get some ordered.
