Sean:
I think they show it up so high on that one because of the nose gear. I think I'd go ahead and go with that, if the muffler will fit. The higher the engine, the closer the thrust line will be to the wing centerline, and the better it will handle.

Thanks bob, I was wondering the same thing. If the thrust line should be nearer to the wing center line. If I place the engine on a 45 the muffler will clear and I can recycle one already drilled hole. So what the heck, I'm gonna give her a shot up high. If it doesn't handle well, I can always move it. I'll just have to poke a few more holes in the darn firewall!!!!!!!!!!
Every hole I have will need to be re-drilled to mount the new engine. I will have 6 holes no longer being used. And all but 2 will be visible now! I'm thinking I'll just put in a black screw at each hole.

Some 30 min epoxy mixed with a liberal amount of milled fiberglass will fill those holes nicely, and if you need to redrill later, the stuff is much stronger than the wood. Your LHS should have the milled glass, it comes in a squeeze bottle that looks like glue.

Geeze, I never figured it would be this much work! Well, I lucked out and found a 1" muffler extension at the hobby shop. So the re-mount went fairly easy. I was able to reuse my existing mount which was a two piece aluminum mount. I only had to move the top. All the other holes are being re-used now.
Big problem is balance. Now she is tail heavy with the smaller motor. I expected it but I didn't expect it to be this much tail heavy. I thought I could move the battery pack forward and that would do it. It didn't. I don't have anything that will work. I finally got some junk that did it but I don't feel good about it being in the nose. No way to fasten it in there. If I were to move my servos to the front portion of the radio compartment just behind F2 it would balance. But that would take a ton of work.
What do you guys use when you need to add some weight? This has to be easier than I'm making it. Where does your stick balance at bob?

It's been awhile, Sean, but I remember it balancing right at the main spar. I used to reload pistol ammo, and I have a whole box of 45 cal jacketed bullets left. I've used them a lot for balancing. Epoxy em in place.

At last she is sitting here all ready to go. The 40 LA took some weight into the nose to get the balance. I sure hate adding weight. Espcially when you work so hard to keep things light! I hope the 40 has enough to pull the DUS around. I've got an OLD Sig Skybolt that I am going to put the Supre Tigre on. So I'll have two planes to fly while I finish up the P51.
Nothing left to do now but pick the day to fly. Keep your eyes open. With luck I'll video tape the maiden.

Hi Sean & Bob, It's been a while since I last checked in. Glad to see that you finally got the stick at the ready to fly state, I don't think you will have a problem with the LA 40, it should supply ample power to pull the stick along, I agree with Bob on the prop choice most 40's are real happy on 15% nitro swinging a 11 x 5 or 10 x 7 prop once you see how they react to the plane they are mounted in. Sean have you weighed the stick as of yet? Anything in the 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 pound range should fly great. Glad to hear that you got to get the thumbs back into action on a plane at the local club, now we "goch ya" for good..........
Back working on my giant stick again, will start building the wings sometime next week after I finish getting all of the ribs cut out. Have the Stab and rudder to do this weekend, I re-designed the stab & rudder to look different but I think I will stick with the original shape as it wouldn't be a stick with out the round shaped fin & rudder with the scaloped evelvator and ailerons on it. Will post some more pics as I progress along.
Been playing with my new Jeff Roy "TameCat" trainer as of late, a really neat & different looking plane, one of those love at first sight affairs, saw a picture of it, had to have it. It fly's like it is on rails, fast or slow. I know it's not a stick but she is a beauty, here's some eye candy.

I’ve gone back a few pages and can’t seem to find out why you gave up on the 61 engine. I’ve built and flown a number of Jenson Sticks and I expect it will fly with a 40 but believe after the thrill of the first couple of flights you will not be happy with the lack of power.

Hi Bill! Good to hear from you. I was wondering about your stick the other day. I should be good, I weighed in at just under 6 lbs. That was with the bigger motor however when I put the smaller 40 on I had to add some weight to the nose. So I'm pretty confident I've stayed under 6lbs.
8178, In a nutshell, I was working on mounting my HB .40 which is probably closer to a 60 and couldn't get it running. The reason I didn't go with the Supre Tigre 61 was that it appeared it would be more work to re-mount it than the 40. In hind sight I think I was wrong. They were probably about the same. I have two other planes I want the 61 for. I've got a Sig Skybolt and I've got a P51 for it. I figured if I really wasn't happy with the 40 on the DUS I could always change again. I haven't given up on getting my HB running either. I thought I could at least get the bird up with the 40 and then continue working on the HB and when I get it running it will be a quick switch back.
I'm still not sure what day this week I'll be flying her. It seems most of the club fella's are busy this week. There isn't much going on. One of the guys is having a BBQ at his place on Sunday afternoon, so I expect that if not before then it will at least be Sunday evening for me to fly her! It's been so long since I've flown, I think it will take a little while for me to want more motor on the DUS.

I fly mine on an OS 46FX and it has plenty of power. the la 46 engine you want to use might be a little lower power from the 46fx but not enough where you wont enjoy flying it.

That's encouraging news carlosponti. What size prop are you running? 11X5?
Yes waconut I do fly combatsim . I started with CFS1 a long long time ago. Pretty much when it first came out. I joined JV44 Redwulf then just after they started. I'm one of the oldest / longest active Redwulfs. Now I fly only IL2 1946 on Hyperlobby. Since having kids 6 years ago I've been inconsistent with my online time. Many of our guys are European and my best times to fly online are after 9:00 PM EST which is early morning hours there.

I don't know for sure but it maybe a 10x6 but it could be an 11x6 too. I don't usually have reason fly below a 6 pitch with the exception of the 13x4w on my saito that is on a ultrasport 40+. I will look at what I have on there tonight when I go home. I am at work. mine had a long roll out due to a tail wheel and wing incidence problem. but once it got in the air it flies suburb. a guy i know flys a big stick 60 with a OS 65la and is pretty fast little plane. On mine I was concerned I would have problems because people told me the jensen(version I have) and original das ugly sticks would have a wing failure if flown on plastic (monokote) covering. I have transparent blue ultracote on the wing and white and same transparent blue on the fuse. Not had a wing problem. the only thing is I never fly high throttle dives so i have found its not really all that important. I made modifications to the center wing rib to have a pin in the front and bolts in the back so i could get rid of the rubber bands. just put a tuned pipe on the OS 46fx just because I had never used one and a stick seemed like the perfect platform to try it on.
