Sean if you want to get a good budget motor, look at the Magnum
line of motors, I have a 52 and a 91, the 52 hasn't seen air yet but
the 91 pulls my Dragon Lady along just fine and has a great idle to full
power transition that is flawless. The Magnum 52 is only $89.99,
a great deal for that motor which is patterned off of most of the O.S.
line of motors. Our engine guru at the club had a discussion about the
difference between the O. S. 55 and the 61, and he says the 61 would be
the best choice over the 55 as it won't have to work as hard being a little larger
displacement, makes a little sense to me...........

Bill , I seldom fly full throttle. The 55 is so much lighter it doesn't need to be flat out to get good verticals. Now if cost is the consideration then Magnums are very goo but consider the Tower 75 too, it's the same block as the 61 OS. Stickmanvic

Well a few more good flights! I didn't get any 15% nitro yet but I'm more confused than ever. The engine was running good some of the time. When she was running right it was more than enough power. Vertical was good I was really having some fun. The problem is she won't stay running good.

The weird thing is, she starts out rich. But acts lean. When I roll her over inverted and pop back out she shuts down momentarily. Or at the top of the loop, she shuts down momentarily. Like it would if it was too lean. But she is trailing a little smoke and definately rich. (not much power) Now it gets even stranger. After about a minute and a half of flight she suddenly will start running real good. She'll fly inverted she'll loop over everything with lot's of gusto.

Now you would think that she would act the exact same way on the next flight without touching the needle. Not. I'll try to take off and she'll be so rich she won't take off. I'll lean her out about 1 click and she's good to go. But the same all over again. I'm wondering if there some dirt in the filter or a hole in the fuel line (inside the tank). Something. If I could get her to run consistently at it's peak she would be a fine engine for the DUS.

I'm going to keep plucking away with it. There's hope for it. I have a problem someplace in the fuel tank or fuel line someplace.

Redwulf,

take the needle valve out and put a short peice of fuel tubing over the needle the reinstall the needle valve. i have had this same problem on another OS engine. I found that the needle valve was leaking just enough to create the uneven running. Its now my standard practice on all my engines to put that peice of fuel tube on the needle valve.

Hope this helps with your problem.

Hi Jim,
Intersting thought. Could you get a picture or two of how you do that? I'll give it a shot. I'm assuming the piece of fuel tube acts like a washer somehow???

Sean, I'll get a picture this evening for you but the fuel tube just slips over the threaded portion of the needle valve and helps insure a good seal between the male threads of the needle valve and the female threads on the carb. It basically keeps the needle valve from vibrating.

It not only keeps the needle from vibrating but also stops any tinny air leaks
in that area that you might have as well. Sean all you have to do is cut a piece
of fuel tubing 1/2 to 5/8 inch long and slip if over the threaded part of the needle,
scew it down and reset the needle to where it was before you took it out.

I've not tried it yet. Since the fuel tubing is so thick, I guess I'm having a hard time believing it could fit. If it goes in the threads wouldn't a little teflon tape do the same thing?

I got into a bunch of other stuff yesterday. I have a boy running some fever so I may not get to the field today to try it.

Don't do the teflon ! ! ! ! ! ! TROUBLE THERE>>>>>>>>>>>
Trust me use a small piece of medium fuel tubing, it will strech over
the outside of the male/female threads of the needle valve. I do this
on all of my engines, saves those ??????????? why it's not running correctly.
As a precautionary second step replace the fuel feed line to the carb and
also the pressure line from the muffler. If it still runs erratic after those
2 steps then go into the tank and replace fuel line there.

Hey Sean you still alive out there? Have you had a chance to run your engine again?

Hey Bill,
Thanks for checking in. I've had a bad series of events and havnt flown. I was gonna fly tonite but.....I've had to attend a funeral tonite and then another coming this Saturday. I probably wont' be back flying again until next week.

No-one in my immediate family. Some church friends. One was in his early 20's in a motorcylce accident and the other a day later 45 yrs old in a head on car accident.

Bill or Jim,
I tried the fuel tubing over the needle. I'm gonna try to fly tomorrow. I must not be understanding. I couldn't envision how the fuel tubing would even fit. It worked out exactly like I saw it in my mind before trying. The fuel tubing won't allow the needle to thread back in.

I took a few pictures of how I was doing it. I must not be understanding how it's supposed to work. I do believe this may be some of my problem. The "O" ring doesn't look any too big. I think it could easily be pulling air in.

I think they thought you had the old needle valve that did not have the O ring seal.

The fuel tubing covers the outside of both the needle valve as well as the outer housing, therefore sealing it off and preventing air from being sucked in. This is a Micky Mouse fix (although my picture proves that I've used it) The proper fix for this is to replace the needle valve o-ring...
