Just curious. Why aren’t you happy with your push rod set-up? I was going to do it the same way on my DUS. Wouldn’t mind a “Heads-Up!” if there is a problem.

Thanks

Bob J.

Hey Bob,
I think the sticks would have been more flexible. The pushrods like I did were difficult to get in right because of the shape of the fuselage. I didn't want to bring my rudder pushrod out on top like the plans showed. Now it's got a bit of a bend on it after it comes out of the fuselage to hook up with the rudder. Take a look at the picture below. There are zero operational issues with my setup. Its strickly something that would have been more convenient the other way.

I've always used solid pushrods. There isn't any problem with them I think I would have had more flexibility if I had used the sticks. I would be able to more easily move my servos forward to help in my balancing right now.

I do recommend bringing the rudder out on top like the plans show. That's a must do. I don't know why I didnt want to bring it out on top. Guess I was just being bullheaded about it.

What stage are you at with the build? Please keep us updated with pics!!!!!

Sean

Thanks for the picture. I see what you mean about the bend. But it’s good that it doesn’t affect performance. I will take your advise when I reach this point of the build. Have only just started construction. All ribs are cut. Even made extra for a second wing. (Check my user name. Lol!) I was anxious to get started, but I have since gotten side tracked by other projects. No longer much time. So the DUS quietly awaits for some tlc. Hopefully, I can get back to it soon. Will definitely send along some pictures, once I get started.

Thanks

Bob J.

Just trying to upload a picture of some of the progress I have made. I have also cut out all the ribs and the fuselage sides. Lots of work to do in the house for a while so progress will be slow for a while. This is the first time that I have tried apicture so I hope it has come out.
All the best, Chris.

Looking good so far Chris! Keep us updated. Watch the rudder and vertical fin when you cover them. With all the grain running vertical like that she has a tendancy to warp. When I build another I'll piece together balsa running the grain in various ways. Mine warped even before covering. But she still flys fine.

I have come to the conclusion with the .40 LA that it just isnt enough engine. The problem appears to be that I'm running it too lean to get the power I need. When she is running properly dialed in she just barely gets off the ground. I'm running 10% nitro. Does anyone have a feel for how much more power I can gain with 15% Nitro?

I'm looking real hard on ebay now for a new motor or a muffler for my 61. I might try some 15% while I look. I've heard that with 15% you can get more power from a richer mixture. I just dont know how much more. When I run her a little too lean she is the perfect motor. She just doesnt like to run long. When I richen it up to just right she almost won't get off the ground.

Sean, I have only flown electrics for the past 10 years...but I flew ic for over 30 years before that. The OS 40 LA is ,I believe, a loop scavenged plain bearing (bushing) sport motor. I don't think 15% nitro will help a lot but perhaps a clubmate would let you try a tankful of theirs. Although a good ballraced 40 would fly the DAS well I think that a modern 50 or a modern sport 60 would be a better bet. Many people over here seem to like the sc52 which is quite a cheap motor. My personal favourites were Enyas which took a long while to run in but never seemed to run out! In the UK there is a company called Just Engines who make silencers to order. Perhaps there is somewhere similar near you? I have taken the info regarding the fin & rudder on board and may let in some anti-warp strips to forestall any problems. Thanks for your help.

Chris.

Hi Chris,
I need a gallon of fuel anyways so i may give it a shot. Your exactly right on with the 40 LA. It's an inexpensive motor. The manual calls for 15% and what I understand is you can get a little more power from a richer mixture. Probably not much though. I'm closing in on a new .61. I may have whole new motor here soon. I just didn't want to buy another 61 as I hope to move into bigger planes soon. Problem I was running into was you can almost get a whole moter and muffler for the cost of a muffler only. I was having a hard time spending that much on just the muffler.

Howdy guys,
I just "splurged" and bought a used OS .60 on E-bay. I've lost bidding on a bunch of motors now but finally got one for what I was willing to pay. Hopefully it will show soon and I can have it flying for the weekend!!!! Finally, I can fly with confidence!!!!!!!

Is a 12oz tank going to be enough for a .60? If I recall that's what I used to use with a .60.

Sean:

12oz should be more than enuff for a 60. I run both my 91s on 12 oz tanks, and fuel amount has never been a issue. I ran my 65LA on a 10 oz tank, and that was never a problem.

I'm gettin back in the Stik business. The wife said I can have my Christmas present early, so I ordered another Great Planes Big Stik 60 ARF. My Phantom was destroyed today, and I'm putting the 91FX from it on the Stik. I can't wait.

Hey Bob,
What happened to the other Big Stick ARF you had? Did I miss something? I'm loving my stick. I knew I would. I'm really excited about getting the 60 on it. The 40 was enough to do just about anything BUT. I do most my stuff low, (old pattern flyier) it was not enough to get out of trouble if I got into it. So I was real conservative. It's gonna be a different world now!!!!!!!!

You'll love it with a 60. My first GP ARF one with the 65LA had unlimited vertical, until the elevator servo arm busted in half and I had a real ugly hole in the ground. Can't wait to try another one with the 91 FX. I've had a good summer flying, but it's been bad for airplanes. My body count is up to four.

Too bad to hear about all the losses this year! So the one that lost the elevator was the Stick you got after you lost the RCM DUS you scratched?

I'm expecting the engine today sometime. It's used, I'm just hoping it wasn't abused. If the wrong fuel is run in those older engines they can wear out fast. What kind of flight time did you get out of a 10 oz with the 65?

Money is very very tight right now for me. I'm probably not going to get to build anything this year. I'm looking forward to building another DUS for a club member. I'm offering to build or "help" build for him. He lives in an apartment and doesn't have a good place to build or a lot of building experience. So I've offered if he buys the materials I'll either build it or open my place up to let him build it with my help. Once it gets started I'll post the progress here.

Sean: 15 minutes + with the 10 oz and the 65LA. Not all full throttle, but quite a bit.

Great news! You are going to like it much better with a 60. Twelve ounce tank will be fine. I few my sticks with 11 – 7 1/2 or 11 – 8 props.
