Sean. Back on an even keel now (almost) but decisions regarding the DUS have to be made. I have just been given first offer on some stuff from a retired modeller. Amongst this stuff is a Webra .61. It has not been run for 11 years and is gummed up. It would need a strip and rebuild and new bearings but would only cost me pocket money. On the other hand I have the electric setup ready to bolt in. I have flown mostly electric for 10 years nowso I am undecided. I may get the Webra anyway and rebuild it.

My Dad had a Webra on his DUS. I've not messed with Electrics at all. I know the DUS is a killer with the 60 on it now! I'm looking forward to getting back out. It's been real ugly here weather wise the last two weeks now.

Post pics when you get them. Will love to see the progress!

I knew you’d like it better with a 60! When you get comfortable with the 60 plan on hanging a tuned pipe on it for a little extra fun.

Just stopped myself from making a big mistake! Was just about to glue in an aileron servo plate when I found that I was going to fit it to the top of the wing instead of the bottom!! Time to stop for the evening!! Silly little pic attached showing the sub fin and tail skid. It is stained with teak wood stain to add to the antique effect! Sub fins also have the purpose of aiding spin recovery.

Just to let you know the build is progressing well, although slowly. The wings are completed and covered. Due to lack of finances I have had to use covering from my stock so the wings are covered in yellow solartex. I have tested my electric motor and it turns a 12*6 at 11000 rpm so it should be adequate. I am estimating an all up weight of 6 1/2 lbs ready to fly ( including batteries). I am also collecting a s/h webra .61 tomorrow so I can always use that if necessary! Lots of work to finish on the house before Christmas so the build will stop for a while.
All the best,
Chris.

Chris:

A 12x6 at 11,000rpm is good for 62mph and over 7 pounds of static thrust. I think you'll like it.

Howdy Fellas!
Anyone got anything going on this winter? I've had to reserve myself to other things right now. I've been watching a Mustang Thread and thinking about finishing up my P51. It needs a lot of "re-work". Its easier to think about building rather than re-building!

I finally got some time to install my firecard and upload the last video of my DUS I long ago promised. My wife didn't know that we had an anti-shake button on the camera. So I'm sorry for the poor quality. It's not real big or real long. About 7 MB so be a little patient. It should stream fine with Windows Media Player.

Here is the DUS Complete With Deadstick Landing . Maybe next year I'll try and get some nice video.

Happy New Year ALL!!!!!!!

Sean

Great to hear from you Sean and I hope that you have a great 2009. Have been poorly over Christmas with the 'flu and still feel groggy. Just I pic to show that my DUS actually exists! Actually very little to do. Need to finish off the battery tray and some triangular round the firewall. Tha cable outers are in and the rx and rx batteries can be fitted under the wing or behind the wing te to get the cg correct. The fus will be either olive green (Toughlon) or dark blue (profilm) depending on my mood at the time. Looking forward to finishing it now. Did you ever get your motor running correctly?
Chris.

All right, Sean. Looks like she flies nice.

I built a 50% size Mikulasko Arrow, and powered it with an Astro 020 and a 3S pack so I'd have something to fly off the snow. It came out real nice and flies really well. As it turned out, we've had plenty of snow but only two good flying days during December. So, I got two flights. Guess I can't complain.

Started a 67" span PBY Catalina, to be powered with a pair of Astro 020's. Should be done before the ice melts off the lake, so it will probably maiden off the snow, as well.

Pastor: I like that e motor setup.

Sean. DUS looks good and you did a great job on the deadstick and landed in the right direction!
Bob that is a neat looking Arrow. Have never tried a waterplane but a few years ago managed to land one of my models in the water filled ditch that runs along one side of our flying strip. I don't think that counts though! I particularly like the pic of the Arrow in the bath....it has given me inspiration for my sermon on Sunday morning ( please don't ask ).
For the first time today felt like doing some work on the DUS. Managed about an hour and then fell asleep. Getting old I reckon. The motor on the DUS is a Hyperion 4020 series which I am using as it is lighter than the Scorpion 4025 which has now been reserved for something else.
All the best to all. Chris

I am following suit to tag along with notices of how you are coming. I just ordered the plans from RCM. It may take a while before starting. It is my intention to modify to use nylon bolts for wings rather then rubber bands. I just do not like rubber bands!

I highly recommend that modification, after all the messing about I had to do with the rubberbands on mine.

Well it has taken 5 months but my US is now ready to maiden. Weight is 6lbs 5ozs ready to fly and the cg is on the rear of the main spar. I still have to get some appropriate decals for the wing. Wing covering is solartex (worldtex) which has been proofed with clearcote and the fus is covered with profilm. I made the fuselage parallel sided from the wing le forwards to help with battery changing but I think that it would be ok as designed. I have used rubber bands for the wing attachment as I specialise in using the wingtips for landing!! I have enjoyed the build and can remember sitting outside shaping ribs on a warm autumn evening. The weather is slightly different now! I will post again after the maiden.
All the best...Chris U.K.

Thanks to you guys on this forum for getting me enthusiastic again. I am pleased with the finished model. I had problems using clearcote and have just been talking to a flying mate about it and he had the same problems. It seems to get really good results you need to spray it on. Next time I might try spraying.
Bob, set up is ....... Hyperion Z4020/14, APC E 12*6 prop, 8s A123 cells. I am running the motor at higher voltage than recommended but at lower current . I am running within its wattage rating so should have no problems. One of my favourite motors is the hyperion Z4019/10 which I regularly run at 50 Amps on 3s 5350 lipos. Never had one fail yet and my son and I have 6 between us. So the motors can take it. Back to the DUS, I will maiden when the weather improves. The wind chill was -8 at our field today and needs to be much warmer for me!
All the best, Chris.

Thanks, Chris. I found an outfit online called "AlleRC" that carries Hyperion and has spec sheets for them.

Let us know how it goes. Knock a hole in the sky.

Maiden flight today...FANTASTIC. 3 beeps of up trim needed and that was it!! I am a conservative flier but...Loops both inside and out , spins (which stop when you release the sticks), rolls, stall turns, a circuit inverted, flick rolls, vertical as far as I could see. All in 6 minutes. Couldn't get it to inverted spin and only knife edged up to 45 degrees. Did not attempt my favourite manouvre the negative flick. After 3 continuous vertical rolls it was getting very barrely. Controls are a bit unbalanced. I need to set some more aileron travel and also some aileron differential. I am very pleased!!! I have since charged the batteries and they took in 1500mAh so 8 minutes looks to be the sensible flight time. This model is as good as any sport model I have flown. The power system is fine, even the prop size seems right. My son has warned me that this is only a 2 bearing motor and to only spin with the motor stopped or very slow. If not the gyroscopic forces will make it noisy. I did not have a camera today but will post pictures some time soon. A great day, a great model..what more can I say!! Once again thanks to you all.
All the best..Chris.

I'm building a Stick in the Kit building forum as well.

I'm using the Lazer Works short kit. He throws in a few extra pieces for doing bolt on wings, etc. However, I can't quite figure out for sure how those pieces go?

I need a little advice!

Nergall. I'm not sure about your wing fixing but my 4*40 uses a single dowel at the front and it has been flown quite violently at 6.5 lbs weight ( electric conversion using 16 nicads) with no problems. Perhaps your kit is meant to have a single dowel. I believe laserworks are very good so perhaps a call to them would sort out your problem. Mine is built from free internet plans. I have no dihedral and taildragger u/c. I used wing shear webs between every pair of ribs. My dihedral braces were made from 1/2 by 1/4 birch ply. I have sheeted a total centre section width of about 10 ins. I used 2 aileron servos and my wing is covered in solartex( worldtex) and appears to very twist resistant. I stayed with wing bands ( old habits die hard ) and of course they don't get oily with an electric model.
As well as the threads on this forum there is also a thread on the "Vintage and Antique" forum which is worth a read.
Hope that you get your wing fixing sorted soon
All the best Chris. UK.

I did email Action Hobbies/Lazer Works, and I did receive a good reply. As you say, they are VERY good to do business with.

Anyway, their reply confirmed all my guesses, except he did say he used a 5/16 dowel on his. (1/4 starting hole in case you wanted to use metal.)

My 4*60 uses two and the other three planes I've built in this size range all used rubber bands. So, my bolt on wing experience is very light.

Thanks for the help!

Second flight today. Flew for just over 8 minutes with still a bit left in the batteries. Flew even better today with just a little inbalance between aileron/elevator. I have increased the aileron movement so hopefully it should now be set up to my liking. I programmed a small amount of aileron differential in and this has made the rolls more axial.
Nergall. there is another thread on the ugly stik...do a search for "ugly stick build from internet plans" and check out the workmanship!! Also does your model have the underfin/tailskid? The underfin is an aid for spin recovery and mine stops spinning as soon as the sticks are released. I wonder what the spin recovery would be like without it? How is your build progressing?
Chris.

Hi Nergal, There are some good builds, I think the one Flying Pastor is referring to is Mustang's. He's the one that got me started! As far as the dowels. It's hard to tell what they were thinking. If you go back to Page 5 Post #115 you can see how I did mine. I used two. I always like two just because...............

Chris, I had a Midwest Sweet Stick which is basically the same. My tail skid would come off on a regular basis. I always put it back on eventually. But I flew her a good bit with and without. She always recovered from spins easily either way. Simply take your hands off and she came right out.

Looking forward to flying again soon. Hopefully I'll get over to Rivanna with the Stick Bob! I'll plan on coming over one way or the other. We'll see if I can bring the DUS too.

Sean

The Lazer Works short kit comes with a nice thick, scalloped piece of plywood for the under fin. Actually, when I looked at this and the low stab, I'm fairly well convinced to go with trike landing gear on mine.

I'm a slow builder, I guess. However, I have the wing done except for the tips and the servos. I just laid out the stab. My goal is mid-April.

I haven't put any additional sheeting on the wing - besides the stuff that makes up the trialing edge. I think I'm going to add a few diagonal ribs instead. Otherwise, it does seem plenty strong. The spliced spar, I think, will do well - especially with the webbing.

As for the dihedral, probably none is best, I just think it will look a tad more natural with a little bit. (No doubt six degrees was too much for my taste!)

Hi Redwulf__34 (Sean).

I would have probably done two dowels similiar to yours if I hadn't bought the short kit. However, I've been assured by two or three other posters now that one is fine for this size plane. I have to admit now that the one dowel solution makes more sense in terms of the way the wing goes together.

I'll post a picture when I get there. (Maybe in a month?) I couldn't find anyone else who had posted a pict of the one dowel solution.

Anyway, just as long as there are no rubber bands!
