What size bolts do you recommend using to bolt the main gear to the fuselage? I'm thinking 4-40 with some blind nuts?

I've made a little progress. I've go the tail section complete and glued on. The wing is almost complete. I need to work the ailerons out yet. My next step is to fit the wing to the fuselage and get the wing bolts in. Then I'll mount the motor and do a test balance just to make myself feel better about the servo location. I putting mine between F3 & F4. Unless they need moved forward which I doubt.

Pictures will come once I get the wing on. I'm getting close enough now I can smell model airplane fuel!! Of couse silk n doping is going to take some time. But painting is the funnest part. Still not sure on the paint scheme. My 5 year old who has adopted this as "his" project want's blue. I was leaning toward yellow. Blue is my least favorite color for airplanes. But..............I may cave in....

Sounds like you're gettin there, Sean.

I used 8-32s with blind nuts, but after seeing one of my buds have an engine failure on TO, and sheer the main gear off his Chipmunk with no other damage, I'm thinking that 1/4 blinds with nylon bolts is kinda cool. Not that I'm going to do it, but it seems to work.

Thanks Bob,
I'm gonna glue in some 1/4" ply for the blind nuts. I'm going on your earlier philosphy that you can't overbuild gear......I'm assuming that 1/4" is over killing. I'm getting concerned with weight. I seem to keep adding some extra stuff. Gotta keep it down since I may be underpowering a bit. I always have a Supre Tigre 61 I could strap on if I need to. But would rather keep it where it's at, on my P-51D.

1/4" should be very good.

You'll find that the turbulated LE on the stick handles weight very well. I'm afraid to weigh mine anymore, after three major repairs, but it flies great. Just came back from the field. First time I flew it with the Bubble Jett tank, and another ounce of weight in the tail. The landings are just too pretty to believe.

It's really my favorite land plane, now. I like it so much I'm going to build another one just like it someday, only hang a Tower 61 on the nose.

Hi Sean
I have been doing some work toward a 150% Jensen Ugly Stick off the Phil Kraft plans for the 60 sized "Stick" and planing to power it with a Super Tiger 2300. Will post some pics when I start cutting out the wood parts......Soon I hope.

Here is a question for you Bob what is this Cline Fuel system you are talking about????

Bill:

You can find the info at: http://www.billsroom.com/pcfs/fuelsysdesc.htm

I have no doubt they are good systems, I just couldn't make them work with Tower engines. (I could get the high end perfect or the low end perfect, but never both.)

A lot of guys use them and they've been around a long time.

Sounds great Bill. Will look forward to seeing them.
I was shaping in the wing to the fuselage last night with my two year old playing in the garage. Well that always creates distraction. I wound up overdoing one side. Not by much just about a 3/32" So I have a little extra work to do. It shouldn't hurt the wing to be seated just a little low as long as I keep it the same.

Redwulf,
I was reading your post about the aileron linkage. On the original Jensen kit and the
original airplane by Phil Kraft all the linkage was on the outside under the wing , it
was not on the trailing edge. The single aileron servo was mounted underneath near
the center of the wing and the pushrods exited the fuselage through small u-shaped
slots on the sides. There was a 90 deg nylon horn mounted on the outside underneath
section of the wing on a piece of plywood glued between two ribs that sent the linkage
to the ailerons and connected with standard nylon aileron horns.
Everything on the outside - out the fuselage , 90deg turn , to the aileron - simple but
effective. I used this stock setup on all three of mine and it worked perfectly.
Also, the wing and landing gear was held on by the old standard - rubber bands , not
as pretty as nylon bolts but a whole lot simpler.
Color: I vote for yellow. I had two red ones and one yellow one all with black maltese
crosses on white backgrounds and my favorite was the yellow.

Good luck with your stick

Thanks Tommy,
I am really thinking about Yellow too. That is kind of my color of choice. Like I said my 5 year has kind of adopted this as "his" airplane. I'm trying hard to convince him Yellow would be better than blue. Any pictures of the Yellow one? I'd love to see it. Was it a "cub" yellow or ??????? I told my wife the other nite Yellow is sort of my favorite airplane color.

My plans are orginal Kraft plans and it shows the aileron linkage the way you described. I just really wanted it concealed. I have decide to do the bellcranks just like the plans except that I'm going to conceal the bellcranks in the wing. I have a Sweet Stick that did this method. It's esentially the same except inside. I'll use a ball link connector from Dubro, aileron ball link If I were a smart man I'd do it just like the plans.......but I'm not a smart man.

Sean:

If you end up in a corner, sky blue is pretty nice looking, as is royal blue. Either one would be cool with the Maltese crosses. Now, a sky blue and yellow combo- that would be awesome, especially if you went with neon yellow. Maybe neon yellow bands around the wings where the crosses go.

Sean,
I have several pictures of the yellow Stik but they are polaroid prints. If I can
figure how to convert them to digital images I'll post them.
The color as I recall was Aero Gloss dope-Cub Yellow .

I have found a laser-cutter that has the Jensen Ugly Stik and sells a short kit. Look for Lazer-Works, kits sell for 50.05 for the .40 size. Check out http://www.lazer-works.com/main.html

CptCan,
That is actually the 60 sized Stik. The original Jensen kit was rated for .40 to .60
sized engines. The first one I had and learned to fly R/C on flew very good with
an Enya .45 two stroke.

CptDan:

I checked that place out right after you put it up. The have the Bud Nosen Big Stik for gas engines.

That's gonna be my first gas plane, for sure.
