This may be a nerd-out question but what the.... My plans don't say how many or where to hinge the ailerons. I'm assuming 4 hinges. How far in from the tips? I looked at some of my old models to get a reference but I did it differently. Most of my airplanes were scale or pattern. The ailerons were a bit different in design. I'm going to guess about 1" in from each tip then equal space the other two??????

What a newbie question this is!!!!

I got my wing bolt blocks epoxyied in tonite along with the landing gear reinforcement. I re-made the warped aileron since I had extra 1/4". Tomorrow I'm out of town for the weekend. When I come home I'll drill and tap the wing bolts, hinge the ailerons and then I'll be ready to roll again.

I'm setting a little goal in my own mind to be flying by end of august. There really isn't that much to do, but I live with a bunch of soccer goalies. They are very good at blocking my goals!!!!!!

Hello all!
I was just wondering. Does anyone know what airfoil is used on this model. Everyone I know loves how this plane flies. Thinking of building one (or two) for myself.

Sean:

The ailerons are pretty long. You might want to think about 4 hinges, one very near each end, and the other two equally spaced.

SC,

From reading the history of the Ugly Stick, it is a TLAR semi semetrical airfoil, the bottom flat from the spar to trailing edge. No specific numerical airfoil was used. When Phil Kraft drew the rib shape, he was alleged to say "That Looks About Right" and the Das Ugly Stick was born. See the picture below.

Hey bob, what is considered very close to the edge? 1/2" ?

Skylark, I wonder if all the "copies" of the Ugly Stik have used the same airfoil? I had a Midwest Sweet Stik and it flew exceptional. I've a set of plans for it and I'm sure the airfoil is the same.

Redwulf,

I can't say for sure, I have only built a couple of DUSs from the RCM Plans. I did fly a freinds DUS back in the mid '70s that was one of many he had "plans" built, but I am not sure which plans he used. I do remember him saying that the flat bottom allowed him to build the wing quickly as he went through DUS quite often. It wasn't from lack of ability, he just pushed the envelope flying inverted trying to touch the rudder on the ground, doing the limbo (upright and inverted) with the streamer set about 24" or so, touch and goes in both directions, as many as he could in a certain time limit. He also made variations of the DUS, at least 10 that I remember, original dihedral, flat, anhedral, swept slightly and the fuselage was either slab or stick build like a Kadet, but always in Red and White with Crosses. He had other planes but most of the time it was one of his "Sticks" he was flying.

1/4 inch if you have room to do the cuts.

Skylark,
The pic you posted is the exact airfoil on my Jensen Kit plans I'm building from. I'm pretty sure the RCM plans are pretty darn exact to the orginal from what I've seen. I'm assuming mine are pretty original. They are from the Jensen kit my dad bought in the mid-late 60's. Mine has the flat rear on the bottom. It's basically flat from the main spar back.

That did make it easy to put together. I did it without dihedral and she went together in no time as one piece. I glued the spars together as the plans showed layed it down and glued the ribs right on from right to left all in one shot. That was probably the easiest part. Except the one little oversight. When I put the bottom spar down I turned it upside down by mistake and now I've got a rougher spar than I should. I sanded one side much better than the other and missed that when I glued it up. Now I've got some tricky sanding to do before covering.

Redwulf,

I had the same problem with my spars and cheated a bit. I took some 3/32" stock, stripped 1/8" wide and cap stripped all the ribs and sub ribs, top and bottom. A little more work but not bad with CA. Faired the leading and trailing edges in and it looks good so far. Still need to finish the fuse and cover, but that probably won't happen 'till fall (too much other stuff going on).

Thanks for the reply, and the great pic. I can’t believe he just eyeballed that airfoil. It flies just too darn good. It just goes to show you, if you know what your doing you don’t need computers, wind tunnels, or cad programs. Just a very good “TLAR” sense. Btw. I’m interested in laying my hands on a set of ugly stik plans myself. Saw the ones on RCM, but I’m a Monokote kind of guy. I’ve read here that there are different plans for that type of covering. I was thinking about buying the plans anyway, and just beefing up the wings. Or do you guys suggest some other set of plans already designed for this type of covering.
Thanks

Crashalot:

The RCM plans are the beefed up version intended for monokote.

SC,

Considering Phil Kraft had already designed, flown and successfully competed with the Kwik Fli, he had experience in design. Phil wanted a fast building, simple, easy to fly, expendable airframe in which to test radios. The original Ugly Stick was designed, built, covered in silk (wing only) and doped in less than 4 days, and that was before CA glues. It's long lasting design is a testiment to a pioneer in model aviation.

Skylark, Mustang.
Thanks for the info. I’ll head over to RCM later, and order a set.
Thanks

Have you had a chance to fly this bird yet? Let us know how she flew! Still waiting for my plans to arrive.
Thanks
