Ok here we go these are some of the progress shots of my 150% Jensen "Das Ugly Stick" enlarged from a digital copy of the plans for the 60" wingspan, it will now span a total of 93" from tip to tip, power to be a Super Tiger 2300 swinging an 18/8 Top Flite prop.
construction of fuselage is a combination of balsa & luan door skin material I had in my shop, main wheels 4 1/2", nose wheel 4", 3/16" thick aluminum main gear custom made by TNT Landing gear, nose wheel gear is Fult RF570 adjustable 5"-7". No weight on it yet have a few more things to complete like the verticle fin & rudder, then on to the wings.

The attached picture show a new material I am trying an epoxy glass honeycomb material, weight is next to nothing, outer skin is approx .0010 of and inch.

BTW John , (aka skylarkmk1) thanks for the info on the Photo Razor, works like a charm.

Bill:

That's looking real nice.

Where did you have your plans enlarged? I'd really like to do the same thing.

I agree, looking very good Bill. Mine seems not so good now!

Couple more shots of my progress.

Here are some pictures of my Ugly Stik scratch built from Internet plans. The airfoil is not exactly right but it flies great. Your's looks great.

I really like the 150% Ugly Stik. My wife walked by the computer and asked what I was looking at. (Like she really cares) When I told here that it was a big Ugly Stik her reply was, "A B-ugly Stik" Ha! Ha!

I bought them from an intenet site "Uncle Willies Plans", www.myunclewillies.com
They are laid out so you can print them at up to 200% which will give you a 10 foot w/s if you like
or anywhere in between. Kinko's can enlarge them for you but they are a bit on the pricey side. I found a local blue print shop in the Baton Rouge area that can enlarge or reduce plans at what ever size I need them, up to 36" wide and they only charge 25 cents a sqaure foot for the prints on a good quality bond paper. Here Kinkos charges 75 cents a square foot.

If you download the plans onto a CD most print shops can do them for you if they have a large continuous printer up to or larger that 36" wide.

Uncle Willie ROCKS!
I've gotten several plans from him and all are top notch!
One is for a 100" PBY Catalina that I have yet to begin. It will have to wait until I get a larger shop!!
Check him out! Uncle Willies Planshttp://www.myunclewillies.com/index.html

Bill,

Any more progress on the Big Ugly Stik? Where do you buy door skins? That's not something you would find at a Lowe's or Home Depot is it?

Speaking of alternative building supplies, I thought I might build the tail surfaces by building the perimeter of balsa then filling the center with foam like depron or something and sheeting the sides with balsa or even door skin. See any problems with that idea?

Redwulf__34,

One thing I changed on mine after flying it for a while was to rotate the engine so the head is pointing to the side and the muffler is under the fuse. Less slime this way. Of course there is more chance of you damaging the muffler in a crash but that is lessened if you build tricycle gear.

Thanks for the tip Propspinner. I had planned to do it that way. I had the engine mounted that way on my Sweet Stick and your right. All the slime / mess stays on the bottom! Much easier cleaning.

This morning I got all my control rods in and sheeted the fuselage top. Also last evening I drilled and mounted the main gear. When the fuselage top dries I'll be ready to make some real headway! I am going to use the engine off my sweet stick. I want to weigh it before tearing it apart to see where this DUS comes in compared to it. If the weights are close I won't have any worries with my PDP .40. I doubt I will anyway but I want to check. I don't have a good scale to weigh right now. I'll need to pick one up. What do you guys use?

I didn't get any responses to my post above, (Post # 148). Is that 1/16" Basswood going to be enough for the wing bolts? Do you think I need anything more substantial? I really didn't want the "typical" bulge.

Hopefully you'll get to see some real progress pics after this weekend!

Sean

Sean:

Almost anything over the balsa will prevent the wing bolts from crunching it. 1/16 basswood or ply. I have four wing bolts on my Phantom, and I used little circles of 1/16 ply down in the bottom of the bolt holes on top of the balsa block in the wing. Hardened em with a little CA. Works great. No signs of compression after R&Ring the wing maybe 25 times.

I would think the 1\16 inch basswood would be fine. You just don't want balsa there because it will dent and crack. It's more important that you have solid wood all the way through the area where the bolts go through. I put two bolts through the LE and two through the TE and made sure the TE and the LE had balsa filler blocks in that area.
