Really getting close, I'm getting excited about flying now! There is so many sizes of music wire now a days at the hobby shops I have no idea what to use. When I was a kid building I just grabbed some wire and used it, never paying much attention to what size it was. Is there a rule of thumb as far as what size wire to use? I'm thinking I probably have overkill on my ailerons.

My son is still pushing for a blue paint scheme. I'm still trying to talk him into yellow!!!

Redwulf,

Check out the Du-Bro site, they have two different sizes of aileron control kits. I have used the 3/32 set on a Kaos without problems.

Sean:

Flew my stik today, first time using a Futaba 6EX 2.4gHz system. Noticeable improvement in control response and "connectivity" over channel 60 on the old system, particularly when the AC is coming at me.

The O.S. 55 AX is now completely broken in, so I was able to lean her out today. The stik will climb vertically to about 300 feet before it loses steam.

Everyone loves the way this thing flies. Can't wait to hear about yours in the air.

I'm getting close now. I'll have some progress pics for you all in a bit.

What size prop are you running on that O.S.? I want to check the specs on my HB. I think it's gonna be close to your O.S. Here's the engine I'm putting in mine, it's the .40 PDP

I took some 3 days of vacation and planned on getting some work done in the early mornings here. However for the past 3 days I've been battling a "nasty" head cold that has me just about kapoot. My whole head and face hurt so bad it keeps me awake all nite and I just can't concentrate to work much on the stick. I did manage some work this morning so I'll post some pictures in a bit.

I'm still shooting to be flying her in September.

Go with the Yellow color scheme... I saw a yellow STIK at the field Wedcnesday, and it looked real good. Blue might be too hard to see against a blue sky....

Yellow is still my choice. But my son has really adopted this airplane is holding fast to blue! I just cant tell him no. He even colored a picture of it and everything!

Here are a few pictures of the progress. I'm down now to sanding and covering.

This bird is looking GOOOOD!!! I think this is when a plane looks its best. When you can see both the inside and outside, at the same time. When you cover it, it hides all that hard work you just got done doing. As for color, I think a deep blue stik with black crosses would look awesome! Just my two cents. Great Job!

Redwulf, nice build.

I skimmed all 10 pages but didn't see any mention of possible flutter.

Some sticks seem prone to aileron flutter. I lost a 40 sized one after 13 seconds of flight. A reccomended fix is to cut off the outer two inches of the aileron and glue it ridgid to the TE of the wing. This removes the wingtip voricies from the aileron and puts it back on the wing.

MTC YMMV

Hey Tom,
Never any mention of sever aileron flutter from the wingtip vortices. I understand this principle and I can see how it might occur. I've never heard it mentioned before though. My dad had a DUS built per plans and I had a .40 size Sweet Stick with the same design and they all flew fine. Next time I build though I will add the 2". That will bring the aileron in enough to use torque rods. Anyone else here had any problems with the aileron flutter????

Bob, I've beent thinking about that deep blue like you described too. I would sort of like to differnciate from the other sticks around a little too. I've even considered not using the old Maltese Crosses on the white background. I thought about the using the later "slim" cross with a white outline. Like the one below only a little slimmer. Just a thought.........Those maltese crosses are almost a trademark of DUS though.........having a hard time doing it differently.

I'm impressed with your craftamanship. I always get too sloppy with the glue. I would go with a transparent covering to show off the woodworking skills.

Sean:

A transparent blue wing would look nice. Maybe with big, white crosses to make it a little easier to see.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. But I wish the camera made me look as good as it did this airplane. I'm afraid the craftsmanship is not as great as the photo leads you to believe! I don't think a transparant wing would be a good idea. I've got a good bit of sanding and working to do to try and cover up some things. It might take a bit of work now getting ready to cover. I've definately made some mistakes here and have learned some things.

Bob, what is your height at the nose gear and height at the main gear? I've got to fine tune that a bit here sometime. Right now my nose is a bit high.

One nit pick for you guys please note: the flared cross used by the Central Powers early in the war is commonly called an 'Eisenkreuz' or 'Iron Cross' it is a variation of the cross pâté. The straight cross, used at the end of the war is a 'Balken Cross' (with an 'e') or "bar" cross. Please don't use Maltese for the first and Balkan (with an "a" for the second. The true Maltese cross has points at each corner as used on the Blue Max
