I'm wanting and planning to build a giant scale Avro Lancaster I or III...

And does any one have any suggestions if there is a 1.4 scale kit I could buy... or are plans avalible???

Has anyone flown/built a 1.4 scale MkI or III Lancaster...?

Thanks...

WOW

I've always thought the lanc was the sweetest looking machine.

BUT do you mean a 1/4 scale Lancaster???????

The Mark I had Rolls Royce XX engines at 1460 hp each. That would mean you are looking for nearly that much in total engine power for a quarter scale representation. That's about 4 - IO520-d's out of a real Cessna 185.

The wings were 102 feet long --- 1/4 would be as large as most real homebuilts.

The empty weight 41,000lbs would put a 1/4 at 10,250lbs That is absolutely staggering.

I wouldn't imagine anyone has plans but if you make them or find some keep us posted I'd fly anywhere anytime to see a model Lancaster that big fly!

Grackle, scaling doesn't quite work that way.

First off the only thing that is 1/4 is the wingspan. The area is only 1/16. And the wingloading would need to be about 1/4 of the full sized so the weight would only be 1/32 or about 1280 lbs to fly as a very fast homebuilt type. Bringing the speed down to about 60 to 70 mph to replicate the 1/4 scale speed would require an even lighter wing loading. Let's factor in a 1/4'ing of the wing loading again to get the scale speed. That should be something like 250 to 300 lbs. Now we have something that will fly with some of the over grown 1/3 scale racing engines and fly at around a nice scale 60 to 70 mph and land at 20 to 25 or so. The real numbers will vary a little but these are probably ballpark enough.

But I sure wouldn't want to buy the truck to move that puppy....

The weight should go down propotional to the volume, which would be the cube root....more like 1/64 th assuming the same aluminum constuction....but then you dont need guns, radar, hydraulics, armour plating, controllable pitch props, huge fuel and oil tanks, etc etc etc... which throws any calculation way off.
Only way to find out is to build one and weigh it

That's basically true Nony. But then you want to factor in the desire for scale flying speed. I may not be doing it totally correctly but I suspect I'm not far off.

I was agreeing with you...sorta, just clarifying one point. In any case, it would be a big plane and whether it weighed a hundred pounds or 300 would be anyones guess at this point. Sorry if there was any misinterpretation...

Ah, sorry Nony. Wasn't sure we were on the same wavelength.

I remember that there was a very large one done a few years back by a team. Not sure but I don't think it was a full 1/4 size. More like 1/5 or 1/6 with 4 Quadras or equivalent sized engines. Still very impressive.
