I read in the EZone Magazine site about EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) not being recommended for beginners? Is that true and if so, why?

Most small EDF's are under powered with high wing loadings. If you have been flying other planes they are not that hard to fly. If it is your first plane I would say to get a more conventional plane to crash so you don't get frustrated with it and give up. The other side is that they do fly at higher speeds so the landing can get a little tricky. If you try to slow them down they will turn onto there backs and head right into the ground.

One of the reasons that it is not recommended for beginners is that EDF's are hard to control at slower speeds. Visualize a propeller blowing air over the rudder and elevator thus having a reaction to the air when you move the control surfaces. Then visualize a ducted fan in the fuselage blowing air out the tail of an airplane. Any air blowing against the rudder/stab, NO. The aircraft will move forward, but with limited control except straight ahead. The airplane needs to be moving at a reasonable speed to get reaction to control surfaces. Result, difficult to control during takeoffs and landings. Flying EDF's would look 'neat' and be fun, but probably not the best way to learn to fly RC.
