I purchased a Slow Stick and the flight pack for my first electric.

Assembly went just fine and all electronics worked like a charm on the bench.
Late this afternoon was sunny and almost dead calm so headed out to the back pasture for my first flight.
Preflight was normal so hand launched into a very gentle breeze. It left my hand in a very nice climb and straight as an arrow. at about 20 feet out and at an altitude of about 10 feet the motor shut off and it dived into the earth. Bent motor shaft and broke prop. No other damage.
Back at the bench I glued the prop back together, straightened the shaft and re-assembled the plane for some more bench testing.
What I discovered was that the receiver quits everytime I extend the x-mitter antenna. It works just fine with the antenna collasped.
There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the transmitter as I use it with a glider and it works just fine.

Anybody have any ideas about this?

You scare me when you said you glued the propeller back together. Bad idea, VIBRATIONS. Straightened motor shaft, bad idea, VIBRATIONS. New props are cheaper than what a Doctor charges for body repair. I hope you don't have a body parts in line with the prop when you start it up!! Also sounds like you didn't charge the airplane battery since the motor cut off almost immediately. Can't say what is wrong with the receiver when you extend the antenna, do the servo's quit operating or is it just the motor, the ESC will cut off the motor on low voltage and the servos will still work. Need more information on that. Again, it may be that you haven't charged the battery properly. A good initial charge will take 14-16 hours. Another thought, did you mix transmitter/receiver brands. Just because they are on the same frequency/channel doesn't make them compatible. Have someone at the LHS check it out or find a RC'r around there take a look.

I glued the prop together just so I could do some bench testing not fly it. I was able to run the motor for about 10 mins at a very slow speed before the BEC cut it off. During that time I couldn't get the rudder and elevator servo's or the motor to operate with the antenna extended.

The batteries had been charged for about 24 hrs with the wall wart before I took it out to fly.

The transmitter is a Futaba and the receiver is a futaba compatable flight pack from GWS. I double checked the Crystal that I ordered for it and all I can tell you is that the number on the crystal can matches the number on the transmitter.

I don't have a local hobby shop.

Could you have possibly not had the antenna extended on your first flight?

I know it sounds stupid, but......

Sadly enough I've done it before (and probably many of us). If the antenna isn't extended your plane with fly for a few feet then basically do a nose dive when it loses the transmitter signal----

Sorry didn't read the part of your first post where you said it works allright with the transmitter antenna down----have you tried any range testing in the field?----settting the plane down and walking 100 yds or so to see what your safe flight range is?--Is your reciever antenna located in the proper place on your plane where it can easily pick up a signal, i.e. trailing out behind the plan

-the only other thing I can think of is maybe you have a loose connection in your transmitter antenna.

Well you've answered most of my questions. But, I have a few more. Have you operated the radio without the ESC and/or the motor? Use your battery from the glider you have and test it that way. If the radio works, you have a problem elseware, if not the radio is kaput. Do a process of elimination. It could be that you have RF inductance causing a problem with the receiver, coming from the ESC and/or the motor. Keep the receiver away from the ESC as they emit RF. Some are worse than others. The motor being in front (naturally), and then the ESC and last the receiver to the back. Keep the ESC to motor leads short, but workable. For a good explanation of this problem go to the following thread (see below) that is from the ezone forum. Ezone is at: www.ezonemag.com and is an all electric web site for all types of info on rc electric hobbies/flying. The thread is in their discussion group. You might also check the "FAQ" on Ezone. Go to the web site and in the left hand column you will see "FAQ", click on it for basic electric flight frequently asked questions. The thread that gives you the info about radio interference is: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=89121 If you move down the thread to the 9th posting you will see and excellent explanation of motor, esc, receiver setup. Good Luck!

One more thing, you say the flight pack is "Futaba compatable". I'm not real comfortable with that. Not saying it isn't, but the problem seems to be with something in the park flyer and not the transmitter. I said if the radio by itself does not work that it may be "kaput", you might also say 'noncompatable'. Anyway you've got some checking to do. There is a RC hobby shop in Ocala and several in Orlando/Tampa. I call anything within 50 miles local. I live in the Atlanta metro area and the closest one to me is 25 miles away.
