I think I will buy a plane, finally, now that I have the money. I need a 1/2a plane that takes a norvel .061, flies with at least 3 HS-81's (thr, ail, ele, or 2 elevons) and can keep good flying characteristics with the added weight of approximately 2-4 9 volt batteries. I'd rather have something that builds fast, is extremely cheap for the kit, and flies on ailerons/elevators or elevons.

Some stuff I was looking at:
1/2a Shrike
HOB Stealth
umm... maybe the other HOB kits..

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Mopzilla,

Hey, so you're ready to give the old heli a break huh?

If you're looking for simple, then I'm working on one of the Ace Simple P-51's right now and for quick, easy building, I don't think you're going to be able to beat this. I don't know how it fly's but there are a lot of people on this forum that have them and like them. I have high hopes. It can be 2-4 channels, depending on throttle and if you want a rudder.

A really nice kit that calls for 2 channels is the Sig Hummer, it's a Sig kit, I've built three of them and they are arguably the best kits around. They build super easy, the wood is awesome, the directions are great and it's like a rocket. Way too fast for me right now, I've got that one on hold, it was a gift and I'm not ready to destroy it.

If this is you're first plane and you're looking for something 1/2a I would get one of the Ace Whizard/Alpha/Grasshopper planes. All have foam wings to quicken building and from what I've heard they all fly pretty well.

I'm thinking of getting one myself.

Um..what are all of those extra batteries for?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help! I did some math comparing the Stealth and the Shrike, and here is what I have come up with:

Ratios:
(Stealth:Shrike)
Weights: 1.29:1
Wing Area: 1.56:1
Wing loading: .73:1

So if the Stealth has more wing area AND a much lower wing loading, then even with the slightly higher weight it can still fly with more weight, right?

I need to get something small for those times when highly overpowering airplanes with giant control surfaces and super fast servos on RF G2 isn't enough! The only thing is that I can't land most of the planes on there.

By batteries I meant a weight equivalent. I have a micro wireless cam with a 9V batt... And in case I want to add some other things I will have room to expand.

That P-51 by Ace looks pretty cool too! I will compare that one too. Thanks for the help!

the stealth sport flies great, but not much room for camera. Hummer is a great plane, just remember throttle! The best one I have seen that would meet your needs is the starcruiser w/ ailerons; cloudranger? a taildragger. Have flown modified aileroned starcruiser taildraggers before cloudranger came out, they fly absolutely GREAT! Then tom herr released the cloudranger, which is just what we were making! sig distributes them now, a little pricey. www.iflyherr.com or www.sigmfg.com

Hmm... I think i might go with the stealth, i have found a pretty good deal it seems.. The camera is approx. 1/2"x1/2"x1/2"

Sorry, nothing happened to any heli, my heli is described in my signature and i have some pics of it on my site.. Only thing is, too much stuff can go wrong. Of course, I can sell you a Futaba standard servo for $10 if you like!

no, no, that one I pulled the photo off their website for illustration, as it was a beauty!! just a set of the new herr 1/2 a floats on it. They are great planes, though. A beautiful build, can't make them crooked. light. fly GREAT! The starcruisers we put ailerons and made taildragger before tom herr started making them that way were among the best flying of the 1/2 a's I've ever flown. very nimble. close in stuff, inverted limbo, most unusual for a high-wing design (of course, you oughta see my hovering senioritas; one w/ saito 72 and one w/ os 52 4-stroke and micafilm covered). It's not 1/2 a, but it's mine. I WILL build a 1/2 a one some day!!

How come so many people have converted the Starcruiser to a taildragger?? Is the trike setup harder to fly with?? Also, how hard is it to add ailerons to the starcruiser??
