I made the mistake of taking apart my saito 120 four-cycle engine. I'm not sure how to determine the proper orientation for the cam gear (the timing). Does anyone know how to get the proper position for the cam gear? Does anyone have a Saito 120S that they could look at the position of the cam gear at, say, top-dead-center?

With the piston at top dead center, the mark on the cam goes straight down towards the crankshaft

I did not find a mark on the cam. Where is the mark? On the gear? Which tooth? Is it between the two cam lobes? Oppisite that?

Send as "private Message" to William Robison. He will tell you how to do it.

Cheers,

Chip

The mark is near the edge of the gear teeth on the front of the gear. It is just a dimple.

You will have to wipe the sludge off the front of the gear and look carefully for a little dimple

Here is a copy of the manual . . . .

Thanks for the link to the manual, but already had it. Is there info that I missed in there on the timing?

Dear w8ye:

I'm OK with the piston at TDC and the cam dimple pointing towards 6 O'clock, but upon reassembly of my Saito 125, it occurred to me that it is quite simple to be off a tooth and that lining up these components seems to be a judgement call.

While it is still on the bench and prior to running, is there an alternative method for confirming valve timing? Valve Adjustment?

You can stick a knife blade in under the cam cover to pin the cam while reassembling.
