I have a Wild Hare Extra 300LX and there are lightning holes in the fire wall and engine box area. I normally cover these holes but on this plane I'm going to leave one open so I can access the bolts for the landing gear. I'm just curious as to how much air really passes through the cowl and into the fuse through these holes. Do you leave your holes open or cover them up?

You should leave them open. In most cases any air compressed in there actually helps strengthen the fuse (from what I was told)

Not sure if that is 100% accurate... but that's what I was told

Figure that enough air can pass though the lower openings to cool cannisters considerably. Since I don't use cannisters I always close off the lower opening into the fuselage via a deflection ramp but leave the others alone. The reason I close mine off is to better direct the air used for cooling. I prefer that the outflow assits the inflow, so diverting out the bottom of the cowl works to my advantage.

Strengthen the fuse?? Now thats funny!![sm=lol.gif]
I know on the QQ Yaks the opening into the fuse is closed but the holes around the engine box are open. In other words, air can circulate around and in the engine box but not into the fuse.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll cover the opening to the fuse with some Ultracote so if I need to get to the bolts for the landing gear I can just cut the Ultracote out.
