Tom, have you ever tried the Zinger 8 1/2" x 7 props? I'm emptying out the old inventory at my new hobby store, these props look like they have been hanging on the wall for 25 years. Some have the OLD Zinger logos on them.

Dave...thanks for the info.
Is the hub area larger on the 8.5 X 7 Zinger? (than the 8 X 7)

Nope, same thickness and approximate size. The blades are a hair wider, and slightly less pitch.

I finished up another prop last night.. Probably the nicest one yet.. I'm planning on throwing it on the old Dago on Saturday to see how it does.. The motor is far from new so it will be interesting to see if the wood will wake it up a little..

One thing I'm still struggling with is how far back to push the high point.. This one I just finished is probably in the 30-40% range.. Is that too far or not far enough or is that something you just have to experiment with? I've got 2 blanks left so if anyone has any input I would like to hear it..

Lee,

30-40% is good, farther out on the blade. Closer to the hub you may find 20-25% is a better number. Trevor Henderson (Big Trev) has a really good article on his Web site that talks about props ... can't remember the URL right now ... maybe he or somebody will jump in with it.

Use the same airfoil as the APC. That was the original intent of the prop, to be a teaching tool.

I bathed 9 props in CA tonight, a little over 1 minute per blade. Wow, next time I will use a fan. I will be quite stuffed up tommorrow, that stuff is tough on me.

After CA'ing both sides and letting dry, I lightly sanded each blade with 400 grit and rebalanced.

AFter that, I did a quick 10 second per blade 2nd dip into the CA, and let dry.

Another light sand and rebalance, finishing up with a scrubbing of Mothers Metal Polish. This really worked nice and the props came out quite smooth.

I double checked the balance on all the props and they look good. I'm going to try and run a few of them on Saturday, it looks like we may hit 60 degrees, I am very curious as to what these turn up.....

After all was said and done, I am definately over an hour per prop, and probably closer to 1 1/2 hours each.

I picked up a couple 8x7's yesterday and worked on one tonight.. Man, there isn't much left of the hub once you put a 5/16" hole in it.. Anyway, the one I finished looks pretty good.. I haven't gone all out with the polish, just hit it with the 400 after the CA.. They're pretty smooth but not shinny like they might be if they were polished.

I still have to drill these out, probably should have done that first, but I like to use my drill press.

Elerts bringing a low time engine on a test stand that he wants a little fuel burned through. Should be a good way to run up these props.

Be there about 2pm, looking forward to getting back to MN.

LOL, I have a lot of motors floating around. Always thought it was better to try and sell them to a local than ebay them out of town for a few more bucks.

Then again Seaholm did get one of my better Quickie motors!

Beautiful day here in Minnesota, I ran 6 of my new carved props on Jerry's test engine (SS) with the following results:

5 Zinger 8x7's, all cut down to 7 3/8" on my miter gauge cutter.

Z1 peaked on the tach at 24,200
Z2 at 23,400
Z3 at 23,600
Z4 at 22,400
Z5 at 21,500

I also tached 1 Zinger 8 1/2x7, which peaked at 22,700

I wanted to run the 3 Cady blanks, but the spinner we had, would not accomodate the big hub on these blanks

My goal of going from light to heavy worked pretty good.

Z1 made a lot of nose, but didn't go to fast. Z2 and Z3 looked comparable to the Black APC prop we ran first. Z4 and Z5 were just too much pitch for this engine.

The best running prop out of the bunch was the Zinger 8 1/2" x 7, this seemed (no radar proof) slightly faster than the 7.4x7.6 CF prop that Jerry had been running.

All and All, I'm pretty pleased for my first go around. The props turned out nice, and most seemed at least close, if not better than the Black Plastic. All I have is time the next couple months, I'm going to see how many I can get sanded down.

Thanks to Tom, Grunk, Darrol, Duane, and others for their help with this. It has actually been pretty fun, and today made it all worth while. At least I don't feel like I'm wasting my time now.

Dave,
I am very glad to see you have sucess with this . This is the only way to be different from everyone else who uses the black props. You have control and thats the best part. You made the plane go faster because of your efforts. How rewarding is that? Now share what you have learned with the next guy. That,s what this sport is about, sharing.

Yep, it was a great day, got in a few flights on the old Dago and brought everything home in one piece..

The first prop I did (Darrol blank) spun up real nice on the ground, about 24.2-24.4K on the ground.. Sounded good and didn't vibrate or anything.. I backed it down to 23.5K and launched it, however, once it got in the air it would have been lucky to hit 170mph.. On to the 8x7 blank I did.. It was a little too heavy and I couldn't get much above 22K.. I'll do some work on that one and see if I can get it to spin up a little more..

In all, everything worked out better than I thought, all the blades stayed attached

Hang in there Lee. It gets somewhat easier but will always be a challange.
