i am used to big 1/8 truggs so is really worth the price to get the crt.5? how does it handle? could i race in truggy class even though its smaller? center diff or slipper? i guess what i want to know is if it is a TRUE truggy or just a novelty truck PM with answers and opinions.
thanx tr_4

I am also wondering the same thing.
Are you REALLY happy with your outcome?
I know other mini's don't have a very good suspension so they get thrown around the track, is it the same way with the CRT.5 or does it handle like an 1/8 scale?

I'm still in the process of building mine, but the ones I've seen run are extremely fast and agile. Jerseyboy has a video that shows just how fast it can be... I believe it's in this thread on page 6 or 7.

I'm not sure how you can compare the CRT.5 to a larger truggy kit as I haven't seen any 1/8 truggy kits in the $260 range. Same with the 1/8 buggies... I don't know of any kits in that price range.

It has a center diff and uses clutches from the 1/8 scale.

Take a look at this video.... the CRT.5 in the right hands can do anything it's master wants it to do...

I'm almost done with my CRT.5.... I'm using the following gear / upgrades:

  • Spectrum 2.0 Transmitter
  • Spectrum SR3500 Micro Receiver
  • Hitec HS-5245 Servos
  • SH .12 Turbo Modified Motor
  • Lunsford Turnbuckles
  • Ofna 5 Cell Nimh Battery Pack
  • CNC Chassis Braces
  • CNC Cross Diff Pins
  • CNC Upper Arm Holder
  • CNC Servo Rack

I just need to cut out part of the wind shield for gas refills and connect/adjust the throttle/brake connections. Here are some pictures...

Yea finally huh... lol ! !

Thanks... it's been a little slow as I ordered everything while I was away on vacation and when I got back I've been crazy busy in the office. The motor is broken in, but I need to fine tune it as well as adjust the linkages. Shouldn't take long, but I just need to set some time aside for it. I also need to cut down the brake rods by the tank to avoid any mishaps.

So far... I think it's a fairly nice trugglet. Extremely well built, great layout, easy to work on and very light. My son is aching to take it out for a run on the track but he understands that I'm almost done. In fact, I like it so much, than I bought a second one last night. Picked it up for $206 at Tower Hobbies ($236 - $30 coupon):

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXPRF3

This one will be for my daughter as she's into the hobby as well. At $206 I was also thinking of getting one for myself as we have a ton of 1/8 buggies at our local track, but very few 1/10 nitro trucks. Our track allows the CRT.5 to run with the 1/10 trucks until then have enough to create a 1/12 class. I haven't purchased the third one as my wife is looking at me cross-eyed already. LOL

The only issue I found is a slight droop on the left hand side... obviously due to the motor and pipe. Once it hits the track I'll see if it warrants any changes to the suspension tune and will make the necessary adjustments. Other than that I don't see any other issues so far, but time in the dirt might say otherwise.

The CNC braces took out some of the inward chassis flex from the front to rear, but there is still some outwards. Again, after a few laps I'll see if it needs to be taken care of, so I'm not too concerned. The radio tray was a little tight, but I managed to zip tie some excess cable under the throttle servo and then everything fit into place. On the next one, I think I'll cut and redo the connectors to get rid of some of the excess cable.

Thanks again for the info on the motor... much appreciated. Once I'm done, hopefully mid-week, I'll let you know how she acts out on the track.

Just one last tip.
Bend your pipe retaining wire so that your pipe sits much higher from ground level. This will prevent your pipe slamming the ground after a big jump. Just makes the pipe last longer.

I bent the wire similar to the picture (not mine) below.

I was able to tune the motor today and the thing simply screams. The SH is a great little engine for the money and I'm considering picking up a second one for my daughter's CRT.5. I can get a Jammin .12 for $25 less at a LHS, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. $25 isn't a ton of money, but I can pick it up tomorrow, rather than waiting a week or so for a SH. Decisions... Decisions...

The CRT.5's handling in the back yard was fantastic and the short time we spent with it tonight quickly satisfied my son's curiosity about it's performance. I got home just before night fall, so we couldn't get to the track (no lights), but even I can't wait now... LOL... I fear a third CRT.5 is in my near future... LOL... I just need to come up with an excuse for the wife... LOL... any ideas?

I dialed out most of the front brakes tonight as I felt it had too much grab the way it was and after the adjustment it felt better to me. As previously mentioned, the left of the car is slight heavier due to the pipe and engine layout, but I didn't feel that it posed any issues to the suspension. But I'll keep on eye out for that when I get to the track.

After 30mins in the yard I brought it in to clean and expect it for loose screws. I noticed that the spur gear rubbed on the gas tank, so I guess I will need to pay more attention to the chassis flex. Any tips or tricks on fixing that issue?

My second CRT.5 is due here on Thursday, so I look forward to putting another one together. Once her body is painted I'll post some additional pictures.

Yes I notice that too. The spur gear is touching the tank. Its not so bad for me to worry about it, so I am leaving it for now.
The CRT.5 brakes is excellent. You find sometimes braking the truck wil roll over forward as you brake.
I found a nice set of Tamiya tyres that is alot firmer and seems to work very well. I really dont feel to spend mega bucks on a OS speed or RB etc. The SH is way powerfull for the CRT.

So, what is the best TX/RX for the .5? I looking at the Futaba 3PM 3C 2.4Ghz. Will I have problems fitting the receiver (R603FF) in?

Also looking at the Spectrum 2...

For those with the SH .12, what pipe are you using?

Thanks,

Just bought one of these from Tower. It should be here Saterday or early next week. I got the one with no engine, for $208 shipped with a $30 on line coupon since, I'm leaning towards converting it to brushless. It's tempting since I have a GTB, 4.5, 5.5 and 7.5 motors with a 2s MaxAmps 6000mah lipo all sitting on my work table. At this point it will be cheaper to get a motor adaptor and pinion gear (with shaft adaptor) for less than 1/4 of the price of a decent nitro motor.

This truck looks great though and I cant wai
