Brenner -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/15/2007 2:22:17 AM)

Well, I placed my order today over the phone, and the lady that took my order told me that it's likely that I'll get it tomorrow because I like in Michigan, which is real close to Ohio.

Reza,

Could you give a basic of comparision that I can use to judge how much vibration is too much? Qualitatively, how much does the Yak 69" vibrate with the two motors that you have tried? How much vibration do you get in the aileron servos, the rudder servo, and the elevator servo? Does the cowl vibrate much? what about the fuselage? is the vibration better, or worse at full throttle?

thanks for your time ....

Rezagh -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/15/2007 4:16:08 AM)

Hi Brenner,

I was talking with Quique this morning. He thinks you need to watch for the vibration on the YS 1.20AC. He told me that vibration on that motor is more than YS 1.10 or OS. Once you got the kit, do an evaluation on the whole set up and see if you think you may need to either beef up the engine box a little or go by the softmount. Sometimes beefing up the motor box will add only 1-1.5 OZ but your softmount may weigh a lot more than that.

My only concern on the vibration is the engine box. If you use good servos I would not be worried about the vibration transfered to the control surfaces.

You are more than welcome to ask any questions while building as well.

Reza

wino2004 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/15/2007 7:47:44 PM)

Reza,

I'm building the 69" QQ Yak in the UK and feel the supplied control horns for the elevator and ailerons are not the correct ones.

On fitting the horns to the elevator, I could only get just over 40mm of down travel before they bottom out.

To try and improve matters, I have fitted the servo in the other way around and shortened the horn which allows a little more travel before it bottoms out on the stab.

In the set-up instructions, it shows 61mm for 3d deflections. Best I can get is 50mm.

As you can see from the photos, the horns fitted to the pictured model in the build manual are very different to the ones supplied.

Any thoughts?

I just got my plane today, and I checked out the elevator horns. Mine look the same as Maurice's, definitely not like what's shown in the manual.

CJE0114 can we please see some pictures under cowl and inside the plane.

Sorry for the delay. I'll get them tonight.

Ok, Here are some pictures as promised.

The nice thing about the side mounted Saito is, I only had to cut two small holes in the side of the cowl. Only the valve covers stick out a little bit..

Rezagh -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/16/2007 4:51:21 AM)

Hi Guys,

Let me get back with you on the horn issue tomorrow evening. I will check with Quique. I think the slots need to be moved a little further. That way you should not have any problems. Plane in the manual is prototype, there is always a little difference between production and prototype but if the arms supplied are wrong, I will have the correct ones sent out to you ASAP.

Thank you,
Reza

wino2004 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/16/2007 7:28:52 AM)

Reza, thanks for looking into this problem.

Just for your information, I dry fitted the horns into an aileron this morning and the measured maximum down travel at 60mm, yet your manual 3d settings
state 85mm.

There is no way they can be fitted wrongly, as the slots in the control surface and tongue of the horn are such a good fit.

With the horns fitted to the ailerons, the pivot point is on the hinge line, but the elevator horns come beyond the hinge line over the stab surface.

Unfortunately I glued the elevator horns before hinging the elevator, so I was 'stuffed' before I realized there was a problem.

Before I shortened the horns, the max travel was 40mm before they bottomed out on the stab.

Maurice.

Rezagh -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/16/2007 10:23:50 PM)

Dear All,

After seeing your pictures and comparing with mine (Prototype) also checking with Quique who is in Canada now, I am sorry to say that some of these kits were shipped with the wrong control horns on the elevator and aileron.

We will send those of you that have gotten the wrong horns, new set of control horn and servo arms. For those of you who have not glued your control horn yet, please do not glue them until you receive your new set.

For those who have already glued it, I will send you a very easy to follow instructions with your set to do the fix and install your new control horn.

I personally want to sincerely apologize for this problem. Quique’s Aircraft will do their best to get these to you. Please email Molly at qqaircraft@gmail.com if you are one of the affected customers.

Regards,
Reza Gholamipour

Something which has been added since the manual was written up is the backing plates for the control horns.

I did not figure their use when fitting the elevator horns, but you can see one fitted here to the rudder. There is another on the other side of the pull pull rudder horn.

I have fitted a YS110.

Brenner -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/18/2007 4:30:04 PM)

Reza,

I'm looking at the engine box on the Yak 69", and I notice two things. It's open to the inside of the fuselage, and most of the wood isn't fuel proofed. Is this how you left the prototype? If yes, did you have any problem with oil getting into the inside of the engine box, and fuselage and soaking the unprotected wood? I absolutely don't want to add any uneeded extra weight, but I want the plane to durable as well.

Brenner ...

cje0114 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/18/2007 4:40:31 PM)

Brenner,

I noticed the same thing and I didn't like the idea of the open box either. Especially with a 4stroke.

As you can see in my pictures, I covered the box with ultracote. Mot pictured is the blasa hatch on the bottom. It's just a piece of light balsa epoxied to the bottom and fuelproofed. The rest of the firewall was left uncovered, but fuelproofed as seen in my pictures.

Also, consider glueing in some extra triangle stock on the inside of the motor box. I did, and I just feel a lot better knowing that the added strength is there.

Chris

wino2004 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/19/2007 12:43:00 AM)

Brenner, I have covered my engine box and firewall in clear profilm, looks nice and keeps the fuel and oil out.

All of the outside surfaces of the motor box are pre fuel proofed from the factory, but nothing inside.
I've given all uncovered external surafaces another coat, along with a sealing of all my covered joints.

Brenner -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/19/2007 3:38:21 AM)

You guys have definitely played it safe, but I'm curious as to what the original design intent was. Have Quique & Reza tested the Yak 69" with the engine box open to the inside, and if not why isn't this mentioned in the manual? Also, I'm not too enamored with the idea of sealing the throttle servo in so I can't get to in to adjust it.

Rezagh -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/19/2007 4:44:13 AM)

Guys,

Quique and I have been flying ours per manual. I see no problems with what you guys have done as well.

Every one of us like to do things different ways. If this makes you feel better then I think you need to do it. It's your airplane, consider the manual as reference and incorporate your ideas for enhancements.

Great job all,
Reza

kochj -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/19/2007 5:27:01 AM)

I just wanted to add, that the stock poser box that comes with the OS 1.20 AX is not as heavy as the web site says it is ...
Also, if you want to use the stock muffler and you are wanting to save extra weight.. but not wanting to spend the extra bucks on a new after market mufler, just grind down the stock mufler....
I did it when I used it on a diferent plane and was able to shave off almost alf the weight..... (I weighted it with a very exspensive digital postal scale that was increadilby acurate)
The mufler is very thick and can be cut down quite-a-bit with a average garage utility grinder and to get in the tight spots on the adapters, I used the Dremel on that..... No issues with heat dissipation either....

Just wanted to let you know about this tip[;)]

Justin

Hey Reza,

Thanks for your response.

I just did some checking, and the muffler that comes with the OS 1.20AX adds almost 8 oz, so I gain a little by using the Slimline. I'm guessing that with this the OS advantage drops to about 6 oz or so, maybe less. How about options to move the battery around? Being able to mount the tank close to the CG is a big advantage with the YS though, something I wouldn't want to give up. How about placing the tank on top of the wing tube? The pressure system on the YS makes it pretty insensitive to tank position. Also, what about the Yak 73"? would that be a better fit for the YS 120 AC? This motor is so strong, and so reliable, that I just hate giving it up.

Brenner -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 11:46:02 AM)

Bison has an after market muffler for the 120AX that I'm tempted to use, but I can't find anywhere where it lists the weight. I'm assuming that I'd get two or three ounces at least though.

Reza,

You say that you and Quique have been flying the Yak 69" as per the manual, but you don't say whether or not you've had any problems with fuel and oil getting into the inside of the fusege. Have you had any problems in this regard? Also, how many flights do you and Quique have on your planes?

marlin847 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 4:04:47 PM)

Reza, i have one of these yak's and you have never addressed the issue in post 74

Now, I have an issue that maybe Reza can help me out with. It seems that my landing gear might have sneaked past QC. it seems to be over bent so to say. the wheels are pointing in since the curve in the gear goes too far. It really looks stupid like this, and it probably takes about 3 inches off the width of the gear. I can post pictures later.

I have this same problem that he has with the wheels towed way in. What can i do about this? Thanks for you attention. Marlin

cje0114 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 4:41:16 PM)

marlin847,

This problem was taken care of with mine after I got in contact with the company through email. They sent me a gear from the 73" Yak, but it is the same. Maybe not as bad, but still the same. I need to give them a call today or tomorrow.

Chris

marlin847 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 4:59:15 PM)

Cj i think the plane is a beautiful plane. This is my second one of his planes i have a 86 inch with DA-50. I think i might have jumped on this plane too early as there is a issue with the landing gear and the issue with the control horns. They said they are going send the gear and control horns. The down side is i am having to wait.[:(] My friend bought a Areoworks 72 inch wing span. I got this one the same day he got his. He is flying his, and i am waiting for parts. [:@] I have sent a reply back to Wayne to see if he is going to make it right and he said he has forwarded it to Quique. I am sure they will make it right as they have real good customer service [:D] (reason i am sticking with them) But i am getting razzed at the field everytime i go, that i have a plane i might be able to fly next month[:(][:(][:(][:(]. Marlin

cje0114 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 5:09:00 PM)

That sucks Marlin.

My gear looks funky, but it doesn't effect the way it flies, so I'm ok with it for now.

As far as the control horns go, I think mine are ok. They don't look like the ones in the manual, that's for sure, but I can get about 45-50 degrees of throw on my elevator, and 45 degrees on the ailerons before they bottom out.

This plane flies great, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you get it in the air. I have 29 flights on mine already since I first flew it last weekend![X(]

I really need to start playiong with the CG on my Yak now. It does everything nice and smooth except for upright harriers. My wings rock like a SOB. I expect thm to rock a little upright, but not this much. Inverted it's rock solid. My CG is at the recommended point from the manual as of now. I know it needs to go back anyway since it will drop the nose while in a flat spin. I can get them flat, but they can be a lot better with a more rearward CG, so maybe that will help the harriers too.

Chris

marlin847 -> RE: 69" QQ Yak-54 (8/20/2007 5:28:50 PM)

CJ, I am sure if you move it back 1/4 inch will make all the difference in the world. I debated with myself about getting a Satio for mine after reading your posts. I will be using a OS 120 non pumped on mine. I know it will fly good once i get it in the air. I know it is like 10 oz heavier than the Saito its just what i have laying around. I hope Reza posts some stuff about closing in the motorbox with film. I wonder if it will cause it to fly different? I just hate to have to wait[:@] for all the parts to come in.

I too would like the wheels and spats to look better.
