Hi guys, I'm situated in Singapore, and is relatively new in nitro MTs. After seeing many reviews and thread, I have already ordered a GST 7.7 and is well on it's way here. It seems like there's no one that I know of owns a GST 7.7 here. I'm very sure that I will not regret it but I'm pretty much concern about some threads mentioning things like broken clutch bell, worn pinion gears, broken pull start, broken gear shifter, snaped output yoke etc. due to improper handling. Getting spares have to take a week or two to arrive here.

I hope this thead will help prevent me (a noob) and many others to make the same mistake. And to really spend time enjoying this truck!

Please feel free to contributes your option!

Check list for:

a. Initial launch (check for any factory defacts or mistunes to avoid damage parts or gears)

b. Proper break-in procedure (recommended)

c. Replacement hop-up parts (commonly damage/ wear parts that need to stock up)

d. Other things need to be noted or usefull tips

Many thanks in advance!

Worried ONE!

Hi
I'm on my second gallon thru the truck
things I have replaced to this point that I believe are important

1 Replace steering servo with Hitec HS-5955TG 200% better servo
2 heat up head with blow dryer before trying to start and loosen glow plug during start
3 get Roto Start unit after break in
4 have broken ct032 rod ends get spares
5 have broken gs248 upper suspension arms I am changing to aftermarket aluminum

other then that the truck runs great

enjoy

Tim

Thanks tim,

Do you have to do any adjustments on the gear shifter, the 3 speed tranny, or the pinion gears before the initial "fire-up."
Hear of gears did not mesh properly end up wearing them fast.
What about adding or removig the diff shims, what does that contributes to
Do it need to add diff oil - front, center and rear during breaking in, or can i do it after when I do my final tuning

Sorry for the noob question

As part of you initial inspection, you should check the gear mesh, and use some low strength or medium strenght threadlock on any high stress metal to metal screws.
I second tmotell's advice, except the rotostart, personally I prefer the pullstart, but I will admit that the CEN .46 engine is a beast!

Is the pullstart easily broken, should I get spares
Do I need regular lubrication (chain lube?) on the gears for longer life, or is it neccessory
What are the preventive maintence in the long ran - Plan to bash this beast but at the same time, keep it operational
I got NO prior expeirence on nitros, sorry!

Diff oil is not a serviceable item, so no need to worry there.

Pull starts do last a good couple of hundred starts, so you won't need a spare day 1, but may be worth getting a few months down the line.

I better steering servo is worth getting, but again, until it is run in and you can drive is in anger, there in no point at the moment.

I have broke an axle, steering mech and a drive shaft, all sorted in a week from Ebay. Oh and I killed a diff, but replaces it with metal Nemesis diff for about $30 US.

Just have fun, but respect it if you want it to last and not always be in bits waiting for the post man to bring replacement bits.

Any recommendation for diff oil set up, I'll be bashing it most of the time on packed sand, loose and on top.
And how about suspension set up.

Thanks guys!

All very good suggestions!!!bravo fellas!!!

I personally love the roto start after tearing(Literally Tearing) the skin from the inside of my fingers when I was breaking this beast of an engine in.(pull start break in only) I do have to admit I had to replace my One Way Bearing(OWB) once. But if you take care of your truck and tear it down for cleaning and maintanence when it needs it, clean the OWB too.

I bash the living hell out of my truck and to do that, I have to be able to control it to the frazzeled edge, then just push it over that edge. So I recommend locking the center diff, 120,000wt silicone fluid in the rear and 75,000 in the front, that setup seems to minimize the torque steer this beast of an engine seems to induce on many trucks. As well as 2 degrees toe in at the rear and 2 degrees toe out in the front. Thats only a good starting point, you will have to develope what works best for your style of driving.

Have fun, be patient and expect to break it.

Get some e-clips, very cheap and can bring you to a grinding halt when they fall out. Check and squeeze the ones that hold the wheel hubs to the axles, lost two first bash - should've pinched them in place first, haven't lost any since.
Pullstart is okay, just wear some gloves for break in - Seriously! And get used to how much to prime the beast of an engine (a fair bit) and she'll start no worries. Mine starts on the first 2-3 pulls, EVERY time, no need for a rotostart for me, less to carry.

Oh yes camber angles should be about 2.5 degrees front and rear. All settings should be done while truck is setting at ride height..

and yes breaking in this engine can be rough, this engine is bigger and badder than any other rc engine in a land based vehicle..I did not break anything just tore the skin from my hands, and IO was wearing gloves just not the heavy leather type. You should use the leather type gloves.

Yeah, I mean leather linesman's gloves... or something heavy duty (like the truck).
Breaking in is not hard on the truck, just hard on YOU from pulling the starter cord! Don't be discouraged by everyone else's dramas, you WILL have your own - does not matter what sort of nitro you buy. They are just as much about the fun and challenge (if not more) from the maintenance and tuning as they are about the fun driving and bashing the hell out of them. You can take push these things as hard as you want to - kill it, fix it and kill it again... all the fun you'd love to have in a real car. Thats why it appears people have heaps of issues.
Going hard is fun
In my opinion, you don't HAVE to swap out the steering servo - especially for bashing, mine turns okay, depends how you set it up and how you use it.
Also don't be bummed if its not what you expect performance wise out of the box, I have 6 litres through mine and it's still getting better every tank, engine takes a while to free up and half the fun is in finding the right setup for you.
One thing, if you like getting big air (bashing to the max) get some spare shock oil or aluminium shocks, you will rip these shocks apart with the weight of the truck, mine came stock with the softest pistons in the shocks - not good for landing hard, tried the hard pistons - too hard, settled on #2 pistons with 40wt shock oil and ended up gluing the shocks together as they kept ripping apart @ the threads and spewing oil all over the rear of the truck (I heard the aluminium ones can bend!)
Keep an eye on your mesh after you land awkward or upside down (on the cooling head) and the pinions will last long enough - cen has the hardened ones out soon, locktite the engine in place - always.
Hope this helps, good luck with the monster.

Pro's: No worrying about 3rd gear not engaging, less weight
Con's: No 3rd gear, no reverse

Pinions available soon thru cen

Al diff case if you want more weight, stockers are fine, IMO upgrade only if you break the plastic... don't forget plastic parts can be forgiving - they flex... aluminium bends
