Would it be hard or frustrating for a car newbie to build the 18ss kit, and what tools are required? Thanks. /Edit; Did some reading on the forum and it seems like the kit isn't too hard. I'd appreaciate some input in what I need to buy with the kit, e.g special tools or stuff from the hobby shop to be able to assemble the kit. (excl. radio and engine related stuff, that I have already)

Aslong as your patient and persevere you can do it -screwdriver set -needle nose pliers -CA glue -Threadlock -grease Just basic field equipment dude, not a biggie. get some extra threadlock, grease, extra fuel tubing, fuel filter, goodscrewdrivers and some pliers, should begood enough, an xacto knife is good to have too

Thanks for helping out, appreaciated. I have a hobbyroom already for building my rc planes so I have most of the stuff/tools you listed. What is this grease you mention, What's it for? And should I use medium or thin CA? I was dragged into this rc car racing by my friend and made some research here on RCU. I opted for the 18ss over the rs4 evo3 rtr because my friend is borrowing me the radio equipment so the price is same, and yeah, I like to build stuff :) ...As for patience, I think I have it pretty much Covered :)

Grease is for the diff's and other sorts of applications that need lubrication, it says it all in the manual where you need to apply it, im pretty sure the 18ss kit comes with grease and threadlock. Doesnt really matter what CA glue you use, not a biggie. Im sure you wont have a problem building the 18ss if youve built planes before

Thanks I actually built a Raptor Heli a couple of years ago. I suppose building a car is similair. (Working on the planes are only wood construction though, no mechanics like in helis & cars).

I need help with routing the fuel line, it'll touch those red cogs on the engine? Can somebody explain how the gearbox work, I have built it according to instructions, but I don't really understand what makes it shift and how it really works? I guess the two red cogs have constant speed from the engine when clutch is engaged, but how does the clutch then select which of the black cogs (43&47) on the drive train that will drive the shafts?

When the trans get to a the right RPM's, theres a small (im gonna say) "nob" the sticks out which then makes the 2nd gear lock into place with the first = shifted into 2nd gear. And u adjust the shift point with the 2nd screw thats a little more at an angle. You really have two options when it comes to the fuel line, #1 get a racing fuel tank so u dont have to worry about it. #2 get longer fuel tubing and route it along the handle. I have the tubing on mine mounted on the handle and used zip ties to hold the filter still

the smaller black cog is the 2nd gear, theres a clutch in there that engages when it hits a certain rpm. As for the fuel line, just turn the tank the other way around, thats what most people do to counter the fuel line problem. you might need longer fuel lines though. toe in only wears tires faster and makes it harder to go straight

hey dude i just noticed ur fuel filter, if its the same one as mine you might have it on the wrong way. Its not a biggie, just noticed it.

HeLLsGod: I'm pretty sure it's on the right way. The filter mesh is on the far side from the tank, making dirt easy to remove when the filter casing is opened. I have it like this on some of my planes and it's worked well. HAd sort of an Anticlimax tonight with my car. I went to buy batteries to go in the radio transmitter and planned to break in the engine but the throttle/brake servo is totally dead. Need to pick up a new servo tommorrow to get this thing going! :)

Man, this thing is fun...and my car is actually working :) Today I got a replacement throttle servo in there and started to break in the engine. It's still winter'ish here in Finland and it was a bit too wet, but I simply couldn't wait any longer. Drove two fuel tanks worth in 2-3minute cycles at a medium rich setting and already now I feel the engine coming to life. Coming from model airplanes and bigger engines, mainly fourstrokes, these small car engines are really diffrent. Lot's of rpm and quick response. The 18ss outlaw engine performs really well so far, starts easily and idles good. Still no idea of the performance of the car since it's too early to let it rip... Anyway, this will be fun ! ! ! Oh yeah, I ordered myself a radio. Futaba 3PM with the 2,4ghz FASST system, should replace the low end AM radio I'm using as soon as it gets here. Gonna finish the break in tommorrow, and see if I can kick it into second gear! Haha, exciting!

Futaba 3PM installed, but the short 2.4ghz reciver antenna wasn't long enough to route the normal way so I drilled and glued the antenna tube directly on the reciverbox.

weird? recievers usually have excess antenna lengths.. still looks good though, custom reciever box! what hop-ups u getting next?

The 2.4ghz system seem to have very short antennas, the transmitter antenna is just that little rubber thingy and the reciver antenna is so short that if I'd route it the normal way from the reciverbox to the antenna tube, it's too short. That's why I modded the antenna placement. So far this radio, airfilter and a Sullivan Tigerdrive is the only upgrades. Very happy with the car so far and hopefully it'll be more controllable in high speeds with my new radio :)

is it cheaper to buy a kit and then by electronics? Ive searched all over HPIs site and find the price of the RS4 3 18SS+. What is it?

RS4 18ss is slightly cheaper than the EVO but id recommend you get the 18ss as the EVO RTR's radio gear isnt all that. Id invest in a good radio to start with cause you will end up upgrading/replacing it later on anyway which ends up costing youm ore money

The 2.4ghz system is supposed to have a very short antenna. You don't even have to route it out of the receiver box. Just leave it inside. You'll still be able to have a signal at 350 meters distance.

I remember reading the spektrum antenna can be cut short to 3 inches without loosing any range i guess running it to the antenna tube is optional

You should NEVER cut any part of the antenna. Always re-route it. The spektrum radio uses the same concept as cordless phones so pretty much you have good reception anywhere. So you dont really need to stick an antenna out and have to cut a hole for the shell
