I bought the RS4 18ss kit today and it comes with a dvd.
Checking the dvd there's some break in instructions that I don't really agree with. I'm new to car engines, but aren't these standard ABC lined?
Flying model airplanes, you definately don't let a new 2stroke/abc engine idle at rich setting to break in, the ABC liner need heat to expand and running to cool will rather damage it than break it in.

I would prefer to load the engine at a middle setting, not too rich, but not too lean for 3-5minute cycles or should I follow HPI advice and break in slobbery rich with no load?

umm i dont know plane engines that well but they have different cooling methods and fuel/oil mix dont they? They might function a little different because on every onroad nitro engine all engine manufacturers recommend to be on the rich side at break-in. Plus dont you break-in plane engines on one of those stands with a prop?

Its best you run it slightly rich just to be on the safe side, plus your covered by warranty this way. You can either do heat cycle method or the dvd instructions which ever your more comfortable with. The heat cycle method proves successful for most people/engines.

Yes, I meant to break it in rich, but not slobbery rich and with load to get the temperature up.
An airplane ABC that is too rich and just idle won't get warm at all = the ABC liner won't expand, causing premature wear.

Disclaimer: New at car engines

I want to throw in the traxxas dvd way to break in an engine. It bassicly says to run at low rpm's ( 1/8 to 1/4 throtle ) for 2-3 seconds on the fisr tank. then 1/4 for 3-4 sec on the 2nd tank .then half throttle for 4-5 sec on the 3rd tank, 3/4 open on the 4th tank for around 5 sec. then 5th tank wide open for 5 seconds, Im not 100% correct but i know its really close (83.46%)

Some cars shift early, some dont so dont be alarmed. Just keep it at a appropriate speed like on the video
