Building a GP 40 size P41. Will run Magnum 61 FS, pnuematic retracts, dual aileron servos. I am at the point where I need to decide on flaps or not. Any input on this?

Since this plane is almost completely sheeted anyway, I have decided to fully sheet the remaining section of the wing. With this I can use WBP and glass cloth to cover.

My wing alone now weighs about 16oz with aileron servos and retracts installed and only top side sheeting installed. Should I worry about the all up weight of the wing and not do the flap thing or will the flaps improve the low speed flight charcteristics on landing enough to justify the weight of two flap servos?

If you are mounting the aileron servos extenally in a rib bay Just use one servo for the flaps where the origional aileron servo went in the design. Make a y pushrod and use the suplied control rods to hook them up like the stock aileron setup.
I built one with a fp 60 and mech retracts came out 6.5 pounds and there was no need for flaps. I moved the retact wells as far inboard as I could and as far forward. you want to get the axles in front of leading edge or you WILL have many "scale landings"
(nose over okay LOL)
You will love it ,the plane flies great!

I gave up on gear covers, could never get them to fit right, heres a pic of it.

Hi John, did you do anything special to beef up the structure in the wing supporting the retracts?

After all the headaches associated with my last plane with retracts, I swore off them forever. But whenever I see
a nice low pass with the gear up, I start thinking again that they're worth all the extra effort.

Second question is, why did you move the gear inboard?

Thanks.

I put 1/8 inch ply triplers along the wing ribs on both sides , and used spruce cross blocks,
I envisioned prop clearance and nose over problems (used a 60 remember?) and the gear mechanism sit at angle torwards the leading edge.(hope you understand that )so the longer legs set the axles farther forward when the gear is down. I really hate nose overs......never hear the end of it with the guys I fly with.

I just moved the wheel wells in as far as I could to get longer gear legs.

Mine came in at 8 pounds with a fully sheeted wing, fiberglass, primer, basecoat/clearcoat finish. YS 45 flies it just fine. Landing slow is not a problem, infact, you'd better slow it down or it will take off again when it gets into ground effect.
