Hugh's 5th Custom build - 28" x 10" rounded pintail, EPS core, no stringer, 100% carbon.
Lots of Veeeee in bottom, no keel, 2 carbon deck lids (one for surfer dude & one for GoPros).
Hopefully this board will hold onto/into the biggest wave faces.
Just finished initial mounting of engine mount & prop drive shaft - epoxy drying overnight.
See pictures below

Hi

Looks like 'great minds think alike'

I introduced the 'V' on my first build and it definitely ran pretty smooth - even for its size and very light weight.
The hydraulic effect ( lift) is hugely reduced with the V bottom- so a lighter hull can travel through chop - with better stability.

My new build - 700mm long - 180mm wide- has an even deeper V- I incorporated the entire pod depth into the V. I found with the first build that the board has a tendency to climb onto the pod at speed, which intern makes the board unstable. I dont think it is as noticeable with the heavier boards, but I want to keep the board as light as possible for longer run time and cheaper running hardware cost.
The drive shaft is housed in a very slim skeg so there is very little drag in the water. The skeg that will hold the board in the turn even more effectively than a pod.
The V bottom will undoubtedly make for the boards handling the choppier water surface even better, as well as simply running with better stability and smoothness.
I have put quite a bit of rocker in the board as well, which should also help on the hollow face.

Totally loving this STUFF !!!!!

Regards
Dominic (YPC)

Hi Maui John

Thanks for the Thumbs Up !

Its really fun 'shaping' these boards - its like having a 'poetic licence'..........................................building 'RACING hulls' can be a bit to 'detailed' at times.

I am wanting to achieve so much with this board = Aim for the lampost and hit the pavement...............LOL

Since the last update I made a RETRO wooden skeg ( glassed)

I have also added the deck rim - this stops the water from penertrating under the deck between the seal.

I was hoping to transfer the electrics from the previous board and test soon - BUT - my ESC seems to be DEAD - I knocked a whole in the first board 'on the rocks' and got every thing wet. I thought these units were 'Water Proof ?????

I am going to POT the new ESC in a Potting Epoxy so that NO WATER can get to it...................................

Regards
Dominic (YPC)

The boards look AWESOME guys!!! Very professional.

I pulled some BIG hunks of EPS out of the trash at work and will carve them down.......when I have time. I've been playing with planes, quad copters, trucks and crawlers again.

I too have soaked a "water proof" ESC and killed it. I now squirt silicon seal into the ends of the ESC and it seams to work fine keeping the water out.

Monday 5th, Maui North Shore, Paia Bay
6 bricks used today on 3 different boards.
Conditions were perfect with 4ft-8ft perfect silky smooth wave faces, no wind and very few surfers(work & school)
Wish I had someone to rc surf with in these perfect conditions.
All charged up and ready for another big session tomorrow - forecast on TV news tonight is 15ft waves with dangerous conditions.

Hey Hugh ! - you lucky chap !

Could it have got any more perfect than that ? ..........................next time give me a call................... love to join you................. LOL

What I am really enjoying about RC Surfing is that I dont have to wait for the ' Once a Month' race day to get my kicks.
I can head out to the beach (3 minutes from home) and have a blast 'most days' - most any time.

The design aspect of these boards is limitless and the potential for so many various moves/tricks on the wave face are endless.................certainly can keep one captivated.

I have designed this board with the prop and skeg further in from the tail - intending to reduce the lift in the tail, especially in the turns. ( less leverage)
With the skeg more forward - when the turn is actuated, more of the inner rail should be pulled into the water, making for a longer rail to carve the turn.
The 'rocker' in the tail should allow for the nose to lift in the turn and give a degree of grace in the hollow sections.

Definitely a sport that has captured my 'sweet spot'

Regards
Dominic (YPC)

For those who grew up reading 'Comic Books' - like I did - pictures sure tell a better story ...................................

Some further progress to the build.

Dual WATER intake - one for motor and one for ESC - most ESC's have a more restrictive flow than the motor water jackets. dual lines keep both components much cooler - especially at lower speeds - allows for more run time.
Steering servo mounted of the deck - to access the mounting screws easier.
Rudder/skeg pivot shaft and control control arm in a separate housing to prevent any water leakage into the main housing. The two housings will be covered by a single deck cover - but have separate water seals.
With motor and battery in place - CG = 45% - measured from aft. - ideal
Plenty of room for battery choices - can play around with various battery pacs to achieve altering CG for different conditions and riding attitude.

Side Note
Last picture - hand made Stainless Steel 'ENIGMA CAMBER outboard leg for a F1 Gas boat - of to the USA in the morning - this latest design of mine actually cambers (tilts) when it turns - so it shifts the power heads CG and the cambered skeg 'rolls' the tunnel hull into the turn - faster /tighter turns - Big advantage.

and so on................................................loving it !............................. already thinking of the next one.....LOL

Regards
Dominic (YPC)

Hi Fish
Your set up is looking very quick and turns on a dime. Great acceleration !
How have you managed to film so steady with the action in the center of the frame ?

hi Dom i just held the phone in my right hand and drove with left, thumb steering. lol.

yours and hughs new boards look sick cant wait to see how they go, could be new revolutionary design.

looking at your board have you thought about going with a water jacket on your motor instead of coil, jacket will provide much better cooling. HK has em pretty cheap when in stock.

another trick mostly for leaky nqd's is to grease up your servo this will waterproof it pretty good. just smear it all over the whole thing.

speaking of waterproofing! ESC'S alot say they are waterproof and they are not, the marine 120 i got says it and its not, i have filled both ends with marine sikaflex really good around the wires all over and it has done the trick.

swell rising tomorrow but will be windy again

later

Hi Fish - not bad for 'thumb piloting'................................got to be awesome with 'two hands........

Really enjoying the building !- worst case scenario it will be a really cool FE for one of my sons...............................

I use clear nail varnish on the seams of the servo and a small'o' ring around the horn with a tad of rubber grease. We actually run the top of our servo's exposed out of the radio box with the F1's

As for the ESC - Im going to try and 'POT IT' - mold it completely in a 'low heat curing' epoxy.

The coil on the motor was a Sunday rush job ( after I blew the small motor) I will order a jacket from HK
I managed 25 minute run time with a 3600 mAh set up using the coil - so a jacket should add more value.

Hope tomorrow brings you some 5 ft hollow - long rides !

Regards
Dominic (YPC)
