Stoked that our First Glassed boards are Starting To Hit Waves
around the Globe. This one was shaped for Mike in Germany.
We made the hull / deck lid. He fitted the board himself with more running gear
And used his own Kyosho Dude Figure.

Haven't seen YPC Post for a while, He might be buried in orders for the Holidayz.
Been There, Done That. Nothing like the stress of being an Elf for Rc Surfer Santa

Updated below: Tested today with a three pack session and there were zero grease/water escaping from the boot.

I was tinkering with my Flex Shaft, pardon the expression.

Came up with a flex shaft boot idea.

Found this little clear rubber boot that was a perfect fit.

Haven't tested it yet, but I think it might work.

New board lookin good surfcurls... the external rudder system is the go... lookin forward to seein em in action

InDaTube Great photos I think I will give that tube sealer a try. I have sponges in my hull too. I carry extra in my pit box to change out when I get water in the hull. They work great. Its weird sometimes I get water and sometimes I don't. I guess it depends on how hard I push the model.

Hey all,,,,my camera mount stripped out and I have not figured out the fix yet...sorry no pictures of the last week or so of Rc Surf adventures.

This post is about the Airtronics radios.

InDaTube had the new MT-4 w/Telemetry....it is sleek and I want one!

Larry mentioned that the telemetry only monitors the receiver battery...or in our case with an ESC, nothing useful.

I wrote Airtronics about this and told them that this feature(or lack of feature) made there top-of-the-line radios WORTHLESS to us electric guys...and if they expected to sell any $$$Radios to us they were going to have to provide a way to monitor the main battery voltage before we would loosen our wallets and splurge!

I also asked about the FHSS3 vs the FHSS4

here is their response:

Tom,

FHSS-3 is just a bit slower than the FHSS-4 receivers. However, the FHSS-4T receiver (from the MT-4) is about the same speed as what you're used to with the FHSS-3 receivers. The only standard FHSS-4 receiver is from the M12, and that is considerably faster as there's no telemetry involved with that.

You can monitor the pack voltage of the main battery with the MT-4 by using the RX-462 receiver. However, we have not received them as of yet.

Now it turns out that I really do not need the telemetry after all.

I have really killed several batteries this past year...ran them way too hot , ran them way too low, you name the abuse...my poor batteries...

I had set the lipo cut off as instructed...it just wasn't doing the job.

I use the Aquastar 120 ESC from HobbyKing...AKA Swordfish 120 (no longer sold at OSE)

A great $50 ESC with lots of programmable features...like LVC (low voltage cutoff)

problem was ...the highest value was 3.3v/cell and then the ESC runs them lower than set or I would miss the cutoff signal

These past two weeks I have had the opportunity to Surf and brainstorm with Maui John ...and Monday night before falling to sleep it came to me!

What if I fool the ESC into thinking I have more cells than I really had? (Maui uses 5s and I use 4s) It does not monitor the cells individually...just the total pack voltage. Could I tell it I had 5 cells and set it so it came in perfect for my 4 cell lipos?

I also set the cutoff back to the default...HARD Setting....Harder to miss when it happens than the Soft setting I had been using.

I tested it over the next several outing and It worked perfectly!

Using a USB adapter,

plugging into the software(came with ESC or easily downloadable) on my laptop

I told my ESC to expect 5 cells (1 more than I really had...Maui told his he was using 6 cell) we were able to set the LVC to 2.8v (the available choices ranging from 2.5 to 3,3v)

5(cell) x 2.8(v/cell) / 4 (cells I really had) = 3.5 v/cell

gave me a cut off at 14.0 volts

Now my batteries came in VERY cool to the touch after a hard run, almost always balanced(these batteries were pretty abused before), between 3.4 and 3.6 v/cell, and with about 20% left in the tank.

I did lose a little run time...but not that much...and my batteries are going to last much longer this way.

I can run them as hard as I like...wait for the cutoff...motor back in....no pro blem mo!

First of all....... It was great to surf with MJ and you guys for the last two weeks.
Video and Photos doesn't fully show the level of surfing performance you guys are setting for he rest of us.
You guys are just amazing...... keep ripping.

On the Airtronics issue......

Thanks for reserching the telemetry for the main battery.

I'm going to order the 462 so I can monitor the battery volts!!!!

Let's add it up....

I have splashed/drowned one, no... two Airtronics MX3x's.....
Replaced them with the MT 4.....
Getting the new receiver......
I have a bundle in Radio Stuff........ I don't get near the water anymore...... lol

The Hard cutoff is the default setting ... it just shuts down when you reach LVC

you have to let off the throttle and it will operate for about three more seconds when it will cutoff again...let off the throttle....ect,ect,ect...

When you use the Soft Cutoff, the motor will noticably slow down...but run until dead.

I try to use as little throttle as I can riding waves...so the Softcutoff is easy to miss if your Surfing an area with channels to go out and peeling waves that are easy to ride.

If its Victory at sea, with busted up waves coming from several directions, or the current is trying to wash you away...the Softcutoff is easy to recognise.

The novak glitch buster is a cool rc car component that filters static or noise from an rc car receiver

Interesting for sure. Not sure how much interference we get with our PU boards...but the Carbon boards may really benefit.

This link will show you how to make one for $1 if your handy with a soldering iron....seems pretty simple , may have to try one myself.

vehicle. Had my brand new RC8 conversion go full bore down the street on
its own at 60+ mph and slam into my neighbor's mailbox post. Completely
destroyed the front end before I even got to run it, and had to replace
the post for the neighbor. Was NOT happy. Haven't had any issues since I
put one of these on all of my cars. It's a 10v 4700uF capacitor....you
can get them at Radio Shack.

Hey Kite.... nice info last posts.... especialy the Hard Cut-off setting and fooling the esc into a higher cut-off value.

I've burnt a couple of batts myself.... no flames explosions or melted boards but way swollen batts from over dischargeing... one of them looks more like a ball than a brick.

Until I get with the latest radio stuff (i tried a spectrum 2.4 but find it best used for land use) my solution was to buy a Qanum telemetry system from HobbyKing.

It cost me about $35 and does the job kindoff. I even spent some more and bought the flexy antenae thinkin I would get better reception but facts are its only fits in the hull better than the thick black std one.... and brown outs are common depending on where you place the antenae in the hull... I guess the ultimate reception would be to get the transmitter antenae out of the hull but not gone there yet.

Anyway I cut the cover off the transmitter (it connects to the balance plug of the battery) cut off the extra lead that can be connected to an Amp/Temp sender and waterproofed it.... there is a bind switch as well so i am useing silicon grease packed around the switch.

Even though it is a pain in the butt to fit and bind it does tell me each cell's volts and has an adjustable 'beep' for whatever v you set.

I think these Qanum's have been shown and talked about before but have included some photo's for anyone interested.

Oh yeh one more thing......
Placing the Qanum transmitter antenae near my 27mhz receiver does cause lots of gltching and spasmodic happenings with the radio control.
Qanum transmitter antenae needs to be at least an inch or two away from old school receivers...

surfcurls I like the looks of your new board. Very clean sleek lines. The wing nuts are a great idea. Wrenching the screws on my board is a pain.

Thanks Park,

The credit goes to MJ.
He came up with the wing nut system years ago.

I can't think of a better way to secure the lid
without getting an Engineer involved...

Now Working on an anchor system inside the wall
of the cavity, so there would be no way the studs could ever pull loose,
I want to be able to crank those wings as tight as humanly possible.

If your kyosho has the stainless steel brackets that hold the deck screws
it should be easy to change over to a wing nut system.

Just get some 5 mm threaded bolts long enough to mount
under the the brakets (using the holes the bracket already has)
and able to go thru the deck lid, then epoxy them in or tighten them with hex nuts.

Then get some ss washers to go over the rubber seal washers and install wing nuts.
just have to make sure the washer under the wing nut keeps water out.

I haven't tried it, or ever seen it done, but in theory
it should work great....

Yes it does have stainless steel brackets. I will give that a try. Good idea. I was thinking a electric screwdriver would help too. The old wrist get sore after a while. LOL , Hey good luck with the new board. It really looks cool. And I bet it handels as well or better than the kyosho board. I was digging around in my old rc marine box and found a Tekin 4-32 Marine ESC. The thing still works. Tekin makes very good stuff. I hope the get back into the marine speedos again.
